Akaretler Row Houses between Beşiktaş and Maçka were established in the area where Şair Nedim and Süleyman Seba Streets meet in the form of a fork mouth and on a sloping land. Akaretler is the most important example of the mass housing type called row houses in Istanbul . The architect of the houses, the construction of which was started in January 1875 with the will of the sultan, is Sarkis Balyan . These houses were designed as rental houses and with the income to be obtained from them , it was planned to build the Aziziye Mosque in Maçka (the construction was unfinished because the Sultan Abdülaziz was dethroned, only the foundations of the building could be built).
Containing 133 residential units, Akaretler was previously owned by the General Directorate of Foundations , and was leased by Net Holding on October 15, 1987 for a period of 49 years. After the renovation works were left unfinished due to financial problems, the ownership of Akaretler Row Houses first passed to Garanti Bank and then to Bilgili Holding in 2005 . With the completion of the renovation works, Akaretler was put into service in 2008 as a complex consisting of 56 detached houses, 34 shops, 6 cafes-restaurants and a hotel.

Ortaköy was a cosmopolitan area during the Ottoman era and the first decades of the Turkish Republic, with communities of Turks, Greeks, Armenians and Jews.
Today the neighbourhood still hosts many different religious (Muslim, Jewish, Orthodox, and other Christian) structures. Ortaköy is also a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, with its art galleries, night clubs, cafés, bars, and restaurants
ORTAKÖY MOSQUE
Clearly, the most iconic landmark of the area is the Ortaköy Mosque. From an architectural point of view, the mosque is gorgeous. But what makes it truly unique is its position, right there at the waterfront.
The Neo-Baroque style Ortaköy Mosque is a beautifully ornate structure, right on the jetty of Ortaköy, bordering the waters of the Bosphorus, and thus highly visible from the passing boats.

Apart from the mosque, Ortaköy is also famous for being the best place to try kumpir in Istanbul. Kumpir, which is jacket potato the Turkish way, is Istanbul street food at its best. You will be surprised by how many food stalls in Ortaköy serve just that. Don’t miss it!
Furthermore, Ortaköy is home to some of the city’s universities and this adds to the area’s vibrant ambiance.
