10 Things NOT to Do in Estonia

Get more Tips here!

From its historical museums to the medieval castles in the capital of Tallinn, you will find a lot of reasons why you should plan a visit, but here are 10 things to keep in mind when traveling to this Northern Europe country.

1. Don’t Get Easily Offended
Estonians have a great sense of humor, but they tend to be more dry and sar-castic when it comes to cracking a joke. If you find yourself the target of an off-hand pun, take it as a compliment and learn to laugh at yourself.

2. Don’t Talk About History
In the 1940s, Estonian Jews were massacred by German police units and Es-tonian auxiliaries by the thousands. These events may have occurred decades ago, but the memories of the death and destruction are still fresh in their minds.

3. Don’t Forget to Wear Reflectors
If you plan on renting a bike and going for a ride after dark, small reflectors are required during the winter months. If you’re caught riding around without them, you’ll be subjected to a fine ranging from $50 to $500 USD.

4. Don’t Ignore Drink Prices
When ordering a drink in a bar, play close attention to the drink prices. Many people have noticed that some bartenders mark up the price of liquor for for-eign tourists.

5. Don’t Keep Your Shoes On
If you happen to meet a kind Estonian who invites you to their home, respect is required at all times. They also expect you to take off your shoes when you step inside, so make sure you’re wearing some presentable socks!

6. Don’t Expect Friendliness Right Away
Many people define Estonians as cold and standoffish. You’ll probably feel a bit of tension, but it won’t last long. When they become more comfortable with you, their demeanor and communication will lighten up drastically.

7. Don’t Travel Without Insect Repellent
Tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme-disease is widespread, especially in the parks in Tallinn. Bites from ticks and other insects are more common in forest-ed areas, so be sure to protect yourself before venturing out into nature.

8. Don’t Expect Help When Traveling With Kids
Estonia is definitely a children-friendly destination, but public transportation isn’t equipped to provide assistance for those with strollers, and a lot of the streets in Old Town are cobbled roads, making it difficult to push strollers with ease.

9. Don’t Use Your Cell Phone While Driving
Talking on your cell phone while driving is prohibited, but you can use a hands-free system, of course. Seat belts are always required, and your head-lights must be turned on at all times – whether it’s daytime or nighttime.

10. Don’t Ask Them to Speak Russian
Many people assume Estonians speak Russian since the neighboring country is close by. But they have their own language, Estonian, which they’re really proud of. However, many Estonians prefer to speak English.

You will definitely would wish to travel to Estonia after watching this video. Estonians have a special love for nature, and many will tell you that they would rather sit under a tree in an empty forest or hike in a national park than almost anything else. Estonia's tranquil, laidback and unspoiled Baltic islands provide a splendid getaway to nature.

Estonia is a Baltic gem offering visitors the chance to see a tiny dynamic land on the shores of the Baltic Sea. Glorious beaches pepper the extensive coastline, although the swimming season is short. After all, the Baltics are not renowned for warm weather - something that any visitor to Estonia must be aware of — the summer is short and the winter is severe.

Tallinn's medieval old town was built by German crusaders in the Late Middle Ages and is in magnificent condition, with the medieval city walls and towers almost completely intact and it rates as one of Europe's best preserved medieval old towns. Visitors can also experience an ex-Soviet occupied country that is now part of the European Union. Traces of the Soviet era are still there to be seen — e.g. Paldiski, a deserted Soviet army base that was once off-limits to Estonians themselves, can easily be visited on a day trip from the capital, Tallinn.

Tallinn — capital city with an enchanting medieval core
Tartu — Estonia's second-largest and oldest city, intellectual hub famous for its universities
Haapsalu — seaside resort town
Kuressaare — home of the Kuressaare castle
Narva — the easternmost point of the mainland European Union
Rakvere — known for its castle ruins and unique character
Pärnu — historical resort seaside city with a small harbour, Estonia's summer capital
Valga — border-town with Latvia
Viljandi — home of the annual Viljandi Folk Music Festival

Top Destinations
Hiiumaa — second largest island of Estonia
Karula National Park — the smallest national park, located in South Estonia
Lahemaa National Park — 50km east of Tallinn, with 1000km² of bays, peninsulas and forests
Matsalu National Park — one of the largest and most important autumn stopping grounds for migratory birds in Europe
Saaremaa — including the town of Kuressaare and one of few well-preserved medieval castles in the Baltics
Soomaa National Park — a peat bog formed from a glacier melt from around 11,000 years ago
Vilsandi National Park — covers 238km², including 163km² of sea and 75km² of land, plus 160 islands and islets

Medieval History & Manors
The main reason most people first come to Estonia is to see the best protected and intact medieval city in Europe - Tallinn. The unique value of Tallinn's Old Town lies first and foremost in the well-preserved (intact) nature of its medieval milieu and structure, which has been lost in most of the capitals of northern Europe. Since 1997, the Old Town of Tallinn has been on UNESCO's World Heritage list.

Living under the rule of Scandinavian kings, Russian empire and Teutonic Knights has left Estonia with unique and rich blend of historic landmarks. Over one thousand manors were built across Estonia from the 13th century onwards. Some of the manors have perished or fallen into ruins but a lot have been reconstructed and now are favourite attractions with tourists. Nowadays there are about 200 manor houses under state protection as architectural monuments and 100 in active use.

[4K] Travel to Estonia and Explore Kadriorg Park with Joel as Your Tour Guide ????????

???? Kadriorg Park is one of the most beautiful historic parks in entire Northern Europe, said Joel. The history of the park ensemble dates back to July 22, 1718, when Peter the Great ordered the construction of a new European-style summer palace near Tallinn. Kadriorg park is more like a green beautiful area in Tallinn where you can enjoy coffee, ice cream, or a glass of wine. Just take half of the day, rent a scooter and spend their nice and relaxing time. Kadriorg located close to the city center. So, everything is right here. Take a taxi and within minutes you can reach everything. 10minutes to the airport, 5 minutes to the city center, 5 minutes to Pirita marina, 7 minutes to legendary Old Town, etc. At the beginning of the 19th century, Tallinn was beginning to earn a reputation as a popular resort town, and the seaside Kadriorg district became a go-to place for holidaymakers. Summer villas, swimming lounges, baths, hotels, guest houses, restaurants, and all this stuff were very handsomely designed.

Japanese garden with its focus on the circle of life and the expressiveness of nature. The garden is designed as a slow journey over stone bridges and around water bodies. In this garden, stones and water are as important as the plants. The positioning of the stones, angling them towards the viewer, or offering a flat step, is fundamental to the garden. These stone bridges were made in Japan. Originally, the garden was intended only for plants from Japan. However, the long and harsh winters changed the game so today you can see here a lot of local plants as well. The Japanese garden is generally closed in wintertime, so you have to notice that.

Estonia (Estonian: Eesti [ˈeːsʲti] (About this soundlisten)), officially the Republic of Estonia (Estonian: Eesti Vabariik), is a country on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea in Northern Europe. It is bordered to the north by the Gulf of Finland with Finland on the other side, to the west by the Baltic Sea with Sweden on the other side, to the south by Latvia (343 km), and to the east by Lake Peipus and Russia (338.6 km).[11] The territory of Estonia consists of the mainland and of 2,222 islands in the Baltic Sea,[12] covering a total area of 45,227 km2 (17,462 sq mi), water 2,839 km2 (1,096 sq mi), land area 42,388 km2 (16,366 sq mi), and is influenced by a humid continental climate. The official language of the country, Estonian, is the second-most-spoken Finnic language.

The territory of Estonia has been inhabited since at least 9,000 BC. Ancient Estonians became some of the last European pagans to adopt Christianity – following the Livonian Crusade in the 13th century.[13] After centuries of successive rule by Germans, Danes, Swedes, Poles and Russians, a distinct Estonian national identity began to emerge in the 19th and early 20th centuries. This culminated in independence from Russia in 1920 after a brief War of Independence at the end of World War I. Initially democratic prior to the Great Depression, Estonia experienced authoritarian rule from 1934 during the Era of Silence. During World War II (1939–1945), Estonia was repeatedly contested and occupied by the Soviet Union and Germany, ultimately being incorporated into the former. After the loss of its de facto independence, Estonia's de jure state continuity was preserved by diplomatic representatives and the government-in-exile. In 1987 the peaceful Singing Revolution began against Soviet rule, resulting in the restoration of de facto independence on 20 August 1991.

The sovereign state of Estonia is a democratic unitary parliamentary republic divided into fifteen counties. Its capital and largest city is Tallinn. With a population of 1.3 million Estonia is one of the least populous members of the European Union, the Eurozone, the OECD, the Schengen Area, NATO, and from 2020, the United Nations Security Council.[14]

Estonia, a developed country with an advanced, high-income economy that has been[when?] among the fastest-growing in the EU.[15] The country ranks very high in the Human Development Index,[7] and compares well in measures of economic freedom, civil liberties, education,[16] and press freedom.[17] Estonian citizens receive universal health care,[18] free education,[19] and the longest paid maternity leave in the OECD.[20] One of the world's most digitally-advanced societies,[21] in 2005 Estonia became the first state to hold elections over the Internet, and in 2014, the first state to provide e-residency.
