10 Things Not to Do in Fiji

Get more Tips here!

Before you head out to the islands of Fiji, it’s imperative to do a little bit of research. Call us Debbie Downers all you want, but ignoring this list of 10 things NOT to do in Fiji can definitely put a damper on your tropical vacay.

1. Don't Forget to Book a Village Tour
Many resorts offer guided village tours. For a small feel, you’ll be taken to rural areas to see the traditional Fijian way of life. At the end of the tour, you’ll be greeted by local artisans who sell handcrafted items that would make the perfect souvenirs.

2. Don't Ride Share
If you need to get around town, a taxi is your best bet. But you should definitely steer clear of ride sharing. According to travel advisories, taxi drivers are the victims of many crimes. So make sure your driver doesn’t pick up randoms while they’re taking you to your destination.

3. Don't Expect to Party All Night
Fijians go to bed super early. If you have plans on partying until the wee hours of the morning, you’re on your own. We recommend Beachcomber, a tiny island in the volcanic archipelago known as the Mamanuca Islands which hosts wonderful island parties with live music and entertainment. There isn’t much going on when nighttime hits.

4. Don't Go Hiking Alone
You’ll experience some of the best sights while hiking in Fiji, especially at Koroyanitu National Park. But proceed with caution while you’re making your trek. Many of the paths aren’t well-maintained and the terrain can be hazardous. Also, it’s also safer to hike with a companion or a guide.

5. Don't Show Too Much Skin
In any other areas, wearing shorts and tank tops is fine. However, if you’re going to visit a village. Women are expected to cover their shoulders and both men and women should wear shorts that cover their knees. Also, hats and sunglasses should be removed as a form of respect.

6. Don't give Candy to the Kids
If you want to give the kids some candies, you should hold off on giving out sugary snacks. The diabetes-related death rate in Fiji is the second-highest in the world. Children also don’t visit the dentist as frequently, so giving them candy will just cause more dental issues for them in the long run.

7. Don't stay in Urban Areas
To cut down on your chances of an unfortunate event happening during your trip, steer clear of the urban areas. There’s a higher crime rate there than in rural areas. If you want to explore a certain part of one of the islands, make sure you ask your resort staff if the area is safe beforehand.

8. Don't be too impatient
If you’re visiting from a fast-paced environment, you may want to continue on with your normal way of living in the midst of the hustle and bustle. However, in Fiji everything moves at the pace of a turtle. So go ahead and embrace the slow pace. You deserve to kick back and relax!

9. Don't Drive on the Right
In Fiji, you’ll drive on the left side of the road. And, make sure you’re very attentive when driving after dark. Roads in the city are paved, but once you enter the rural areas, the roads aren’t properly maintained. There aren’t adequate street lights or road signs, and many of the roadways are full of potholes.

10. Don't Drink Too Much Kava
Kava is a legal and traditional herbal drink made from the ground root of a spicy pepper plant. There are actual kava ceremonies. A glass of kava won’t do you any harm, but if you drink too much, it can cause grogginess and a decrease in motor coordination and reaction times. So on that note: Don’t kava and drive!

BULA from one of my all-time favorite countries -- FIJI!

I am here for a third visit -- but this time is just a 24 hours layover en route from Micronesia to Tuvalu -- so I decided to make a 5th episode of my favorite series, seeing how far I can maximize $100 in 24 hours!

Many people think that Fiji is so expensive (and it certainly can be)... but if you live like a local, then I find it to be cheaper than anywhere else in the Pacific.

Is Fiji the ULTIMATE honeymoon destination? We'll be answering that question in this video! We’re covering everything we wish we’d known before our Fiji islands trip, including where to stay, how to get around the islands, and more! Be sure to watch through to the end of the video where we’ll be sharing our 5 hot travel tips you absolutely need to know before you go!

Is Fiji a Good Place to Honeymoon?
How far is Fiji from the US, you may wonder?
Is it expensive to honeymoon in Fiji? Yes. Fiji is an expensive place to vacation.
What to Expect in Fiji...

There are two main islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. We chose to fly into Nadi, which is the main transportation hub on Viti Levu. From Nadi, we were able to easily explore the popular island chains, Mamanuca and Yasawa.
The experience you’ll have out on the islands is worth the trip from Nadi. This is where you’ll find the iconic beaches that you expect when you go to Fiji. There will be a big price difference between staying on the mainland vs. a private island resort, but if you can fit it into your budget, you won’t be disappointed.
The Mamanuca island chain is a little closer to Port Denarau than the Yasawa islands so prices will fluctuate based on your proximity to the main port. To give you an example, To get to Liku Liku resort, which is in the Mamanuca chain, Helicopter and air transport starts at $700 per person roundtrip. A private speedboat will cost you about $1,000 round trip for 2-4 people. And the public ferry is a little over $100 per person roundtrip. These numbers are approximate and vary depending on how far your island is from the mainland.

What’s the best resort for your Fiji honeymoon? It’s worth splurging on a high-end resort on one of the gorgeous private islands in the Mamanuca or Yasawa island chains. We absolutely fell IN LOVE with Liku Liku resort, which is one of the only resorts in Fiji with the iconic over-water bungalows.
When choosing the best resort in Fiji for your honeymoon, be sure to research how to get there and the cost of transportation. Make sure it’s an Adults Only Resort

Fiji is a place where you go to relax, sit by the beach, go for a swim, drink fancy cocktails, and be pampered at a high-end resort. Which is arguably the best way to honeymoon. If you need a little more excitement than sitting by a pool, Fiji does offer that too! There are incredible places to snorkel and scuba dive that can be reached right off shore. We highly recommend the scuba and snorkeling company at Barefoot Kuata, in the Yasawa island chain. We chose to stay overnight in a beachfront tent so that we could snorkel with reef sharks the first afternoon and then scuba dive the following day.
In addition to snorkeling, you can usually kayak and paddleboard right off shore if your resort has the equipment available. There are also some really exciting cultural dances with fire, which your resort can usually arrange for you.
So between relaxing in a tropical paradise, being surrounded by some of the friendliest people in the world, having tons of fun activities to keep you occupied, and a selection of some of the world’s most luxurious resorts, we can confidently say that Fiji is the perfect honeymoon destination.

Fiji Tours - Choose Your Own From 330 Islands!
In terms of tourism, the island state of Fiji in Oceania is considered the most developed. Like a diamond with 330 facets of islands, it is spread in the Pacific Ocean and is famous all over the world for its sandy beaches, quiet lagoons, picturesque hills, tropical evergreen forests and crystal clear ponds.

Only a third of the Fiji islands are inhabited, the rest are uninhabited, and here you can fully feel like a Robinson of the 21st century, settling in a bungalow covered with palm leaves on your island. For lovers of secluded, but civilized recreation, there are island hotels.

On the large island of Viti Levu is the capital of the state - Suva.

Holidays in Fiji will be remembered not only by a “beautiful picture”, but also by the hospitality of the local population, excellent service, and exotic. While large islands attract connoisseurs of “partying”, large beaches, attractions, as well as their flora and fauna, then you can go fishing for small ones and do spearfishing. Exotic Fiji tours for fans of surfing, diving and skiing.

Tourists are eagerly introduced to the culture of Aboriginal people in local villages, and show traditions and customs. Particularly spectacular rituals are the famous dances on burning coals.

Couples in love are attracted to the islands by magnet and wedding tourism is booming here. Wedding ceremonies here are especially vibrant and spectacular. Newlyweds call Yasawa as the best island for marriage.
