Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is an island country in the Lesser Antilles Island arc, in the southern portion of the Windward Islands, which lie at the southern end of the eastern border of the Caribbean Sea where the latter meets the Atlantic Ocean. The country is also known as St. Vincent.

Its 389 km2 (150 sq mi) territory consists of the main island of Saint Vincent and the northern two-thirds of the Grenadines, which are a chain of smaller islands stretching south from Saint Vincent Island to Grenada. The main island of Saint Vincent measures 18 km (11 mi) long, 11 km (6.8 mi) in width and 344 km2 (133 sq mi) in area. From the most northern to the most southern points, the Grenadine islands belonging to Saint Vincent span 60.4 km (37.5 mi) with a combined area of 45 km2 (17 sq mi). Most of the nation lies within the Hurricane Belt.

To the north of Saint Vincent lies Saint Lucia, to the east Barbados. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is a densely populated country (over 300 inhabitants/km2) with approximately 120,000 inhabitants.

Its capital is Kingstown, also its main port. The country has a French and British colonial history and is now part of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States, CARICOM, the Commonwealth of Nations, the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).

The island now known as Saint Vincent was originally named Youloumain[3] by the native Island Caribs who called themselves Kalina/Carina (l and r being pronounced the same in their language). The Caribs aggressively prevented European settlement on Saint Vincent until 1719. Prior to this, formerly enslaved Africans, who had either been shipwrecked or who had escaped from Barbados, Saint Lucia and Grenada and sought refuge in mainland Saint Vincent, intermarried with the Caribs and became known as Black Caribs or Garifuna.

Beginning in 1719, French settlers from Martinique gained control of the island and began cultivating coffee, tobacco, indigo, cotton, and sugar on plantations. These plantations were worked by enslaved Africans. In 1763 by the Treaty of Paris, France ceded control of Saint Vincent to Britain, which began a program of colonial plantation development that was resisted by the Caribs. France captured the island in 1779, but the British regained Saint Vincent under the Treaty of Versailles (1783). This treaty was an ancillary treaty to the Treaty of Paris (1783), through which Great Britain officially recognised the end of the American Revolutionary War.

Between 1783 and 1796, there was again conflict between the British and the Black Caribs, who were led by defiant Paramount Chief Joseph Chatoyer. In 1797 British General Sir Ralph Abercromby put an end to the open conflict by crushing an uprising which had been supported by the French radical, Victor Hugues. More than 5,000 Black Caribs were eventually deported to Roatán, an island off the coast of Honduras.

Slavery was abolished in Saint Vincent (as well as in the other British colonies) in 1834, and an apprenticeship period followed which ended in 1838. After its end, labour shortages on the plantations resulted, and this was initially addressed by the immigration of indentured servants. In the late 1840s many Portuguese immigrants arrived from Madeira and between 1861 and 1888 shiploads of East Indian labourers arrived. Conditions remained harsh for both former slaves and immigrant agricultural workers, as depressed world sugar prices kept the economy stagnant until the start of the 20th century.

Black Sand Beach - St. Vincent and the Grenadines

A beautiful beach on the windward side of St. Vincent, West Indies

10 Best Caribbean Attractions

The Caribbean's best attractions and cruise excursions offer a chance for vacationers to embrace nature, go adventuring and experience wildlife up close.

WATERFALL HIKES / DUNN'S RIVER FALLS

The most famous waterfalls in the Caribbean is located on Jamaica at Dunn's River Falls. Visitors climb the waterfalls in a daisy chain of people.

The climb up the rocks and through the splashing water is 600 feet and challenging, but it draws all ages and anyone who is moderately fit.

Other islands have numerous and sometimes more challenging hikes through rain forests before reaching waterfalls. Islands with well-known falls include St. Lucia, Trinidad, Dominica and Grenada.

TOURING HISTORIC PLACES

Anyone with an interest in history will find Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, as a starting point for understanding the history of the Caribbean.

Sites include the forts of San Cristobal and El Morro, both built in the 1500s; and La Fortaleza, also built in the 1500s and the oldest governor's mansion in the Western Hemisphere still in use.

Many other Caribbean destinations such as the British Virgin Islands still have forts, buildings and churches dating back centuries to the time of the original Spanish, Dutch and British explorers.

ZIP LINING AND CAVE TUBING

People who take western Caribbean cruises will have the chance to try two activities popular on Central American stops -- canopying and cave tubing.

Canopying is common in countries such as Honduras and Costa Rica. Visitors climb a ladder up a tree as high as 100 feet into the air. They are strapped to zip lines and glide from one tree to another with views of rainforests, monkeys and mountains.

Fun seekers will find that cave tubing in Belize is the most popular adventure excursion in the country. Visitors go to Sibun Caves Branch Archaeological Park, where they jump into a grotto, sink into a large inner tube, and float down a river and through a series of dark caves once used by Mayans for religious ceremonies.

SWIMMING WITH DOLPHINS AND OTHER SEA CREATURES

A half dozen destinations including Cancun and the Bahamas offer visitors a chance to swim with trained dolphins in large enclosed pens. People have a chance to be dragged through the water, thrown into the air and even get a hug.

Barracuda usually don't hug people, but for anyone with an interest in seeing them, various snorkeling trips at places like the U.S. Virgin Islands might provide a chance at spotting them.

Another swimming adventure is in Barbados, which is one of the few locations with excursions to swim with giant sea turtles that have become comfortable having people in the water with them.

The most famous experience with sea life is Stingray City off Grand Cayman. Vacationers can take excursion boats out to a sandbar where a large school of stingray have become used to swimming with people and even touching them. Visitors jump into the water, which is only three or four feet deep, and go snorkeling with the stingrays.

Vacationers will find an array of Caribbean attractions that will suit many interests and provide a chance to do more than spend time on the beach.

A Caribbean cruise or island vacation for most people means a cruise or spending time on the beach.

As someone who has traveled there more than 15 times, I can tell you that my best Caribbean travel tips include some great attractions and things to do.

Beaches make going there a fun family vacation, but it is the attractions that make it truly memorable.

Shore excursions for cruise visitors offer a chance to interact with sea creatures in the ocean (Stingray City), explore ancient ruins (Chichen Itza) and go on some of the adventures on this video (cave tubing in Belize).
