Trekking & Things to do in Kyrgyzstan (Tian Shan Mountains)

In this video I summed up the best things to do in Kyrgyzstan for you based on my 2 week lasting trip to Tian Shan mountains in the west of the country.
➸ My Kyrgyzstan Guide:

MY CAMERA EQUIPMENT
▸ Cam1: Sony RX 100 V
▸ Cam2: Sony A7 II
▸ Joby Gorillapod
▸ Audio Recorder: Zoom H2n
▸ SDHC Memory Card
▸ Waterproof Memory Card Case

I spent more than 2 weeks in Kyrgyzstan working together with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the local tourism board to show you an interesting mix of the best things to do in Kyrgyzstan from outdoor adventures and cultural insights to overwhelming food experiences.

Beside checking out the local attractions I got the chance to stay like a local in a yurt camp, went hiking with locals and horse trekking like a true nomad ;)

Even though I spent quite some time in the country I could only focus on the western part and couldn’t go as deep into the mountains as I wanted to as the infrastructure isn’t as developed yet.

This trip was executed within 15 days - following I list all the places I visited & Things to do in Kyrgyzstan:
- Alamuu Yurt Camp
- Karakol
- Issyk-Kul lake
- Bokonbaevo
- Dungan family dinner
- Tian Shan mountains

Our visit Bishkek travel guide documentary covers some of the top attractions including a food guide (best restaurants and street food), top museums and the city by day. We also cover off-the-beaten-path activities you won't find in a typical Bishkek tourism brochure or Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan city tour.

15 things to do in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan Travel Guide Video Transcript:

Greetings from Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan! Hello from Central Asia. It is our first time here and we are going to be spending a few days here in the capital. So we're going to take you on a little tour and show you fifteen things to do around Bishkek.

First up, we visited Ala-Too Square, which is the central plaza in Bishkek. While there isn’t much to do here, it’s one of the city’s major landmarks, plus they also have lots of benches and water fountains where you can take a quick break. From there, we crossed the street and made our way over to the State Historical Museum.

Another place you’ll want to visit in Bishkek is the Osh Bazaar. It may not be the biggest in Central Asia, but it’s a bustling maze where you could easily spend a few hours. We had no problems at the market, but we were warned by several locals to ignore the fake police who may ask to see documents and camera permits. So keep that in mind if you encounter them!

It is shopping time. Next up we're at the Osh bazaar and you can find everything here. We're seen fresh produce, snacks, chocolates, clothes. Right behind me we have an entire aisle dedicated to dry cheese balls.

Directly across from the abandoned casino, you’ll find Victory monument which was built to commemorate the 40th anniversary of World War 2. The three curved arcs represent a yurt, and the sculpture of a woman standing near the eternal flame is meant to symbolize her waiting for her husband and sons to return from the war.

We missed the start of opera and ballet season by just a few days, however, if you’re in the city at the right time.

And if you’re craving a short escape from Bishkek, you can always plan a day hike to the nearby mountains with the Trekking Union.

As far as food goes, there’s plenty to sample ranging from grilled meats to dumplings, and noodles to mixed rice, plus there was one drink that really left an impression on us.

With our time in Bishkek winding down, we made a visit to Oak Park which is full of sculptures, and then we also visited nearby Panfilov Park.

And that’s a wrap for our trip to Bishkek. As you can probably tell from this video, this city is the kind of place that you experience as opposed to ticking off attractions, so it ended up being a fairly relaxing trip after a few busy weeks of travel around Kyrgyzstan. As always, if you have any suggestions of things to do in Bishkek, feel free to share your tips with fellow travellers in the comments section below. See you next time!

This is part of our Travel in Kyrgyzstan video series showcasing Kyrgyz food, Kyrgyz culture and Kyrgyz cuisine.

Tajikistan is a country in Central Asia surrounded by Afghanistan, China, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. It’s known for rugged mountains, popular for hiking and climbing. The Fann Mountains, near the national capital Dushanbe, have snow-capped peaks that rise over 5,000 meters. Top 10 Places to Visit in Central Asia and the Caucasus - Silk Road Travel Video (Documentary)

Welcome to Central Asia and the Caucasus, two beautiful regions on the crossroads of Asia and Europe. Often overlooked as travel destinations, the countries here provide some of the most rewarding and unique experiences. From stunning mountain landscapes of the Pamir Highway to historic monasteries in Armenia, from spectacular monuments along the ancient Silk Road to the modern skylines of Baku and Astana.

I traveled through these regions for four months in 2013, and in this short travel documentary I share with you my personal top 10 places to visit. The countries included in the video are Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:

We begin this journey in Samarkand, one of the most iconic cities along the ancient Silk Road. Located in Uzbekistan, it’s full of remarkable monuments but also provides a good introduction into daily life, especially in the lively farmers markets and bazaars. After Samarkand, we go to the Caucasus, to visit the fast developing capital city of Azerbaijan, Baku. Visiting the modern shopping malls and vibrant streets gives an interesting contrast with the narrow alleys of the old town here, and the wide promenade facing the Caspian Sea.

The Pamir Highway in Tajikistan is one of the most challenging, but also rewarding, travel destinations in Central Asia. It requires solid preparation, and many tourists decide to hire experienced travelers and guides for their trips. Back in Uzbekistan, the Fergana Valley takes you back in time, with charming villages, and an opportunity to view a traditional silk weaving factory.

Astana, now known as Nur-Sultan, is the modern capital city of Kazakhstan, and sometimes nicknamed as ‘Dubai of the Steppe’. It’s an interesting place to visit, and attracts people from across the country to work, study, and live. Back in the Caucasus, Tbilisi is steeped in history, and full of culture and charisma. The stunning Tsminda Sameba Cathedral is an important place of worship in the Georgia’s Orthodox Christian religion.

In Kyrgyzstan you will find some of the region’s most traditional ways of life, as nomadic shepherd families still move from villages to classic yurts. Traveling across the green pastures is a great way to experience a lifestyle that seems unusual in many societies these days. The capital city of Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, is a peculiar place on the list. Regarded as a secretive dictatorship, Turkmenistan is also one of the most mysterious and closed countries in the world. Keep in mind that people here face severe limitations in their daily lives.

Armenia is a beautiful destination in the Caucasus, and includes the friendly capital Armenia, and several stunning medieval monasteries. We finish this journey in Bukhara, another important stop on the historic Silk Road. There are many mosques and other landmarks to visit, but it’s also just a friendly town where you can eat some delicious food and soak up the relaxed atmosphere.

Adventure Travel in Kyrgyzstan | Horse Trekking and Hiking Trip video transcript:

Well it is our first full day in Kyrgyzstan. We're getting started right into the adventures. Yes. Our horses are here right in town. We're not even waiting until we get into the countryside. We're going to get on them right away and this is going to be awesome. This is what? A three day adventure. We're going to be staying in yurts.

Yeah, so we're going trekking along the south shore of Issyk-Kul lake (Ысык-Көл). Last time we were on the north shore so we'll be seeing a different side. I think the horses are waiting for us so let's hop on. Let's do it.

We have snow capped mountains up ahead.

So we're already making progress on the horses. Last night we slept in the town of Bokonbayevo (Бөкөнбаев) and my horse of course wants to eat.

So yeah, we just wandered around the town had a very relaxed afternoon and then this morning our guide came to pick us up and we are beginning the horse trek. We're on the south side of Issyk Kul Lake and last time we did Song Köl (Соңкөл) and we mostly hung around the north side of Issyk-Kol Lake (Иссык-Куль) as well so we'll be seeing a new part of the country.

So before lunch we're going to give you a quick tour of the camp. So basically we've arrived at someone's home. We're going to be staying in the yurt and we also have some outhouses over here.

It is lunchtime and we have a wonderful spread of food here. Yeah. Let's take a little tour. So we have the typical kind of an appetizer or even a dessert which is bread. And various kinds of jams. Jams, butter, creams. It looks like we have maybe a raspberry jam and apricot jam.

It looks wonderful and we have meat over here. Yes. Chai, yes.
Sam learned the word for thank you. The Kyrgyz word for thank you. rahmat saga (рахмат сага).

But what I love about Kyrgyz hospitality it is just that you always when you're invited into someone's home you get this wonderful spread of food. They are so generous. They always prepare more food than you could ever eat. And also your cup of tea is never empty. It is always being refilled.

Time for the grand tour. Time for a tour of our first yurt. So this is pretty cool. 1st yurt of this trip. We've slept in
yurts before. Yes. But seriously they pile so many mattresses and blankets there is no way this is by far the fanciest yurt we've ever been in because normally we've just slept on the ground.

now we're going hiking. Yeah, that is mountain life for you. Yeah. You have to be dressed for all kinds of weather and prepared for just about everything because one minute you're getting a hail storm and next minute it is beautiful for hiking. Yeah, and we've got a dog joining us.

we had a really nice dinner which we didn't film. Uh, that was pilaf or plov which is rice. Rice mixed with meat and other vegetables. And carrots. Carrots. Delicious.

And now there is a kökbörü match that is our favorite sport in Kyrgyzstan so we're going to go watch.

We are having a picnic. So we stopped by a little lake up on the mountainside. We have snow capped mountains right in front of us and we're going to have a nice little lunch with our dog friend.

Well good morning. It is the start of day three. We just finished having breakfast. We had some semolina with milk and some bread and tea. And now we're getting the horses all saddled up and I think we're riding into town. This is the final day so I believe we've got about four hours ahead of us and then the trek will be over.

This is part of our Travel in Kyrgyzstan video series showcasing Kyrgyz food, Kyrgyz culture and Kyrgyz cuisine.

Kyrgyzstan (/ˌkɜːrɡɪˈstɑːn/ KUR-gih-STAHN;[8] Kyrgyz: Кыргызстан Kırğızstan Kyrgyz pronunciation: [qɯrʁɯsˈstɑn]), officially the Kyrgyz Republic (Kyrgyz: Кыргыз Республикасы, romanized: Kırğız Respublikası; Russian: Кыргызская Республика, tr. Kyrgyzskaya Respublika), and also known as Kirghizia (Russian: Киргизия [kʲɪrˈɡʲizʲɪjə]),[9] is a country in Central Asia.[10] Kyrgyzstan is a landlocked country with mountainous terrain. It is bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west and southwest, Tajikistan to the southwest and China to the east. Its capital and largest city is Bishkek.

Kyrgyzstan's recorded history spans over 2,000 years, encompassing a variety of cultures and empires. Although geographically isolated by its highly mountainous terrain, which has helped preserve its ancient culture, Kyrgyzstan has been at the crossroads of several great civilizations as part of the Silk Road and other commercial and cultural routes. Though long inhabited by a succession of independent tribes and clans, Kyrgyzstan has periodically fallen under foreign domination and attained sovereignty as a nation-state only after the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Since independence, the sovereign state has officially been a unitary parliamentary republic, although it continues to endure ethnic conflicts,[11][12] revolts,[13] economic troubles,[14][15] transitional governments[16] and political conflict.[17] Kyrgyzstan is a member of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Eurasian Economic Union, the Collective Security Treaty Organization, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the Turkic Council, the Türksoy community and the United Nations.

Ethnic Kyrgyz make up the majority of the country's six million people, followed by significant minorities of Uzbeks and Russians. Kyrgyz is closely related to other Turkic languages, although Russian remains widely spoken and is an official language, a legacy of a century of Russification. The majority of the population are non-denominational Muslims.[18] In addition to its Turkic origins, Kyrgyz culture bears elements of Persian, Mongolian, and Russian influence.
