Top 9 Beautiful Places to Visit in Algeria

Top 9 Beautiful Places To Visit in Algeria. Is Algeria Safe to Travel or Work? Read full articles before your journey.

Algeria (Country in North Africa) Despite many western advisory warnings against visiting Algeria, the security situation is getting better. Terrorism in 2005 was focused only in isolated areas such as heavily wooded mountains in less developed regions of the center and attacks near the Libyan or Malian border caused by war in those two countries. Security forces are doing their best to protect visitors to these areas, but tourists must take caution when visiting these places. They have to give their itinerary and plans to the local police before taking the road.

Do not travel after nightfall; travel by plane if you can rather than car; avoid minor roads; ask the police if you are unsure about your surroundings and nothing unusual should happen to you. Also, you should trust only official travel advisories when it comes to personal safety when you travel to a foreign country.

As with most Muslim countries, prostitution is illegal and punishments are severe, so it's best to avoid it while staying here.

Travel in Algeria । Top 10 Algerian Tourist Destinations

1. Algiers
Algiers is the capital city in Algeria and has an estimated population of around 3,500,000. The city was founded by the Ottomans and is rife with history and beautiful architecture. The ancient Casbah is a winding urban maze, with streets flowing through the old town like streams. Also worth exploring is the Dar Hassan Pacha, which was once the city’s most decedent mansion. The interior of the house has been under renovation since 2005 and is unfortunately closed to the public.

2. Atakor
Although difficult to reach without your own transport, the Atakor Plateau, situated in the Ahaggar National Park, is worth any of the effort or inconvenience. The landscape is a red-brown dry landscaped dotted with harsh sheer peaks. The terrain is like something straight out of a sci-fi flick and is a sight that will stick with you for a long time. The highlight of the plateau is the Assekrem Peak.

3. Tamanrasset

Tamanrasset, sometimes referred to as ‘Tam’ is a modern and lively town that you will find if you travel south through Algeria towards Niger. Tam has everything you might expect from a modern town including a number of shops, restaurants, banks and travel amenities. The town is a great base for exploring the Ahaggar National Park whilst retaining comforts of a well equipped town.

4. Oran
Oran is the second city of Algeria, it is a lively port city with heaps of character and beauty. Oran is an attraction in its own right and has historical buildings a plenty to explore including beautiful mosques, the Casbah and Le Theatre. The range of beautiful architecture is possibly the best of any city in Algeria. Oran is also a great place for scuba diving, sampling Algerian cuisine and listening to lively Rai music which has its origins in the city.

5. Annaba
There were many geographical reasons for the Phoenicians to found Annaba that are still apparent today and are the reason for the cities relative prosperity. The city has a natural port which handles many of the country’s exports but for travellers, the city’s history and culture, especially Hippo Regius, is the main attraction. The ruins of Hippo Regius are surrounded by olive trees on one side and the sea on the other. The ruins include mosaics, bronze trophies and ruins of villas and temples.

6. Constantine
Constantine is a natural marvel that has transformed over the years into a stunning spot for tourists. The city was the Capital of Numidia and after that Roman Numidia and it goes without saying that politics and power have always played a part here. The majority of buildings in the city can only be reached by crossing the bridge across a large canyon. This gives the city a feeling of fantasy that has been retained since the time of the Romans.

7. Ghardaia
Ghardaia is part of a five town cluster right on the edge of the Sahara Desert but is also the name often used to refer to the entire cluster. Ghardaia is almost a country in its own right with its own dress, religion and social traditions. Guides are required in order to access the beautiful old town or the Sidi Brahim mosque. Food and accommodation here, as in most Algerian cities, varies immensely in price and quality.

8. Tlemcen
For stunning Moorish buildings in Algeria there is only one option: Tlemcen. The buildings here can compete in beauty with those in Southern Spain or Morocco. The town was important for the Romans but sadly not much evidence has survived from those times. Sights include the Great Mosque, the Eiffel Bridge and waterfalls in the nearby National Park of Tlemcen.

9. Setif
Another of Algeria’s cities which was founded by the Romans, Setif is situated in the Little Kabylie region of Algeria and is over 1,100 meters above sea level. The roman ruins here are well worth taking time to study. In addition to the Romans, the French have also left their mark on the city. Sights in the city include the main square with its Roman sculptures.

10. El Oued
Intriguingly nicknamed ‘the city of a thousand domes’, El Oued is an oasis of a city in what seems to be an endless sea of sand. The reason for the nickname comes from the many domed roofs on buildings in the city. The reason for the domes is protection from the intense heat from the sun in summer. One of the main reasons tourists visit El Oued is to shop, the city is arguably the best place for shoppers in the country.

10 Things Not to Do in Algeria

Get more Tips here!

Algeria, that unknown and yet wonderful country. Not everybody thinks about it when thinking about their holidays but they should. So, to help you prepare your trip we bring you these Things not to do in Algeria.

1) Don't forget your visa
The visa to Algeria isn’t particularly the easiest one and, unfortunately, it’s required for most countries in the world. So try to have it ready before you start your trip and you'll avoid a lot of trouble.

2) Don't Expect Sleep to Be Cheap
Mass tourism doesn’t really exist in Algeria, so hotels are very expensive if we compare them with how cheap anything else is in the country. You can find prices from 30€ to 200€, although, most of them are over 50€ a night. If you're travelling with a lower budget you can always get a youth hostel instead where you'll pay around 2 € per night. On the other hand, you could always try CouchSurfing, making sure the people you choose look safe and have many positive references. It’s a great way to meet local people!

3) Don't forget your dictionary
Most of the younger people do know English but don't hold on that because, it’s not that easy to find people who speak English. The official language in Algeria is Arabic and some people speak French as it was a French colony. So if you want to be able to communicate bring a dictionary in French.

4) Don't get a taxi
Taxis are expensive and they usually try to cheat tourists. You can use the Yassir mobile app which is basically the same as Uber, or get a bus. Although, they don't tend to follow their schedules. Renting a car isn't that cheap either. And if you go to the desert try to book a flight, they're not too expensive and you’ll save some time too.

5) Don't forget your cell
If you want to be able to move freely without a guide and find historical places, hotels or restaurants by yourself, don't forget to bring your cell phone and install the Waze app which is a free driving directions & live traffic map app that works the best in Algeria.

6) Don't travel everywhere
Borders with Libya, Mauritania, Mali and (nisher) Niger are absolutely no-go zones in Algeria, they're the most dangerous ones, as are remote or mountains areas. But don't worry because these areas are far from all the tourist attractions.

7) Don't rely on having Wi-fi everywhere
Sure big hotels, offices, and random apartments are sure to have a wifi connection. However, if you’re out and about and want to use the internet in Algeria you'll need to get a local sim card with data which will cost you around 5-10€ per month. And, out of the 3 different networks they have, choose Mobilis, it has a better range.

8) Don't forget your money
Here, the local currency is Algerian dinar. And there are not many places where ATM machines accept international bank cards. Sure, you could try the airports, huge hotels like Sheraton or regular banks, but sometimes they're out of money. So to avoid being left without money, bring some emergency cash too .

9) Don't start your diet
In Algeria, they eat a lot of fast food such as shawarma and fries, they're very cheap and you'll find them everywhere. But you can always go to a restaurant to eat nice food, if you prefer, which will cost you about the same as western European restaurants do. Oh, and don’t forget, drinking alcohol in public is forbidden.

10) Don't think it’s all just sand
When people think of Algeria they imagine riding camels in the desert. But, guess what? There are also cars, buses and trains, just like your city, yep. This is a civilized country! Sure, the Sahara desert occupies four-fifths of the Algerian territory, but they also have a coastline, ancient Roman Empire ruins and stunning heritage of the Ottoman Empire, Spain, France and much more.

Where do you want to know what not to do in next?
