VISIT ARMENIA - THINGS TO DO IN YEREVAN (Travel Vlog)

My first visit to Armenia and my first day in Yerevan, I explored the city, visiting the cascade, seeing the mother of Armenia statue located in victory park, then meeting a local that had just started a free walking tour company and was kind enough to show me around. I visited the flea market, saw a local playing the duduk instrument, I also had another try of Kvas... and liked it. Ending off the day at republic square watching the night time fountain show.

YEREVAN, Armenia: Top sights and attractions of the "Pink City" (2016)

TURN ON SUBTITLES FOR EXPLANATORY NOTES ABOUT THE SIGHTS AND ATTRACTIONS!!
(I am aware of the fact that this video does not have my audio commentary, so I added explanatory subtitles! This was my very first video on YouTube and I have been trying to improve things.)

A weekend in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia

Yerevan is the capital of Armenia, a country located in the Caucasus, bordering Georgia, Turkey, Azerbaijan and Iran. It is largest city of Armenia as well as one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities.

In addition to this video, also check out my blog post 10 reasons why I fell in love with Yerevan, Armenia:

In this video, you will see Yerevan's most important sights and tourist attractions, including the following:

Republic Square can be considered the main square of Yerevan. The Government House, the History Museum and the National Gallery, the Marriott Hotel and several other government buildings are located on this huge square. Originally designed by Alexander Tamanyan in 1924, Republic Square is the favorite hangout of the locals. With its unique pink neoclassical buildings and the reflecting pool, Republic Square can easily be considered Yerevan’s architectural highlight. What I found remarkable about this square was the unified architectural style – all buildings share the same pink-ish and yellow-ish neoclassical design.

The Cascade is a staircase that connects Yerevan’s center (Kentron) with the Monument neighborhood. It consists of multiple levels and a total of 572 steps. Apart from its architectural magnificence, the Cascade offers sweeping views of the city and, on clear days, mighty Mount Ararat in the background.

The Cafesjian Center for the Arts is an arts museum located within the Cascade complex. It offers a variety of exhibitions and dozens of modern and contemporary sculptures by well-known international sculptors. The sculptures are scattered around Cascade Park, the green area in the lower section of the Cascade complex.

Armenia might be a small nation, but it is big on character. A visit to the country today is more likely be dominated by its medieval treasures than its more recent past.
This is a country with serious historical legacy. Christianity arrived in AD 301 and Armenia proudly calls itself the world’s oldest Christian nation. Religion still tends to play a large part in visitor itineraries - from the centuries-old monasteries that stud the hilly Lori region to the mists-of-time bibles at the wonderful Museum of Ancient Manuscripts - but Armenia is changing.

Around the country, travel highlights include the charming little town of Gories and the arty mountain settlement of Dilijan, but exploration anywhere in Armenia is likely to reap rewards.

5 Things NOT To Do in Armenia

Get more Tips here!
Armenia.
Heritage of the Kardashians and supposed resting place of Noah's Ark. However, for a hiccup free vacation there, follow these things not to do when you’re hitting the road in Armenia.

1. Don’t Expect Everyone to Speak English
A lot of people throughout Armenia will speak some English with you. But it’s pretty pompous to expect them to understand you. Just take the time to memorize a few easy phrases like “hello” = Բարեւ 'Barev'

2. Don’t Skip a Picnic
Armenia is absolutely filled with incredible wine, cheese, fruits and veggies. If you have the opportunity, it’s never a bad idea to grab some delectable goodies and have a nice, lazy picnic in a public area.

3. Don’t Forget To Do Some Research
If you’re an American, it's likely that your average history class didn’t exactly spend tons of time talking about Armenian culture. So, before you travel there do a little research as the locals will appreciate the passing familiarity with their culture.

4. Don’t Discount Some Adventure Travel
If you’re in Armenia to sit back, look at the scenery and drink some wine, then you came to the right place. But there are plenty of extreme sports available like skiing, rock climbing and even paragliding.

5. Don’t Miss Out on the Churches
Armenia was the first country in the world to adopt Christianity and is also home to Mt. Ararat — the place where Noah’s Ark supposedly made landfall. As a result the country is home to some of the world’s oldest and most beautiful Christian churches.

Armenia is a nation, and former Soviet republic, in the mountainous Caucasus region between Asia and Europe. Among the earliest Christian civilizations, it’s defined by religious sites including the Greco-Roman Temple of Garni and 4th-century Etchmiadzin Cathedral, headquarters of the Armenian Church. Khor Virap Monastery is a pilgrimage site near Mount Ararat, a dormant volcano just across the border in Turkey.

Amazing Culture: The culture of Armenia encompasses many elements that are base on the Architecture, geography, art and music of the people.

Great Food: The cuisine reflects the history and geography where Armenians have lived as well as sharing outside influences from European and Levantine cuisines. Fresh herbs are used extensively, and fresh and dried fruit are often used both as main ingredients.

Very Beautiful Country: Armenia is a beautiful, scenic country full of many historic tourist attractions. Therefore, it is a great country to visit with your family and friends, and also to enjoy a fun relaxing vacation.

Friendly Locals: The locals are very helpful, hospitable, and grateful to tourists who choose to visit their country. They are also highly discipline people.

Very Safe: Of course, safety is a priority when traveling... but in Armenia, this is not an issue because crime is very, very low. Tourists can walk at night without being in fear, and there are plenty of honest police officers working in the streets 24/7.

Armenian Street Smarts - Things To Avoid

Get more Tips here!
Armenia... The often overlooked nation has tons of activities to keep even the most discerning traveler happy through the duration of your stay. That said, it’s also possible to get into a little bit of trouble so here are some Armenian Street Smarts to keep you safe!

1. Don’t Be Afraid of the Locals
In general, Armenians are always very friendly when talking to visitors. They’re a warm-hearted people who will bend over backwards to help out a stranger. If you’re lost or you just have questions, consider asking a resident.

2. Don’t Take the Midday Buses
When in a big city like Armenia’s capital of Yerevan, the buses in the middle of the day are always super crowded to the point that finding a seat is basically impossible. Instead, take the city’s underground transit. It’s just as inexpensive and much quicker.

3. Don’t Stay in the Cities All the Time
Armenian cities are great, but if you skip the nation’s gorgeous countryside, you’re not getting the most of your trip. Consider taking a vacation to some of the world’s oldest wineries.

4. Don’t Go to Bed Early
Especially when you’re spending some time in a big city, be sure to take a little late night trip to one of the inner city’s thriving cafes. They’re a perfect opportunity for a little bit of people watching.

5. Don’t Skip the Vernissage
These open air markets are scattered throughout Armenia. They’re a great place to find some homegrown crafts like jewelry, woodwork, paintings, and a whole lot more. These artisan-crafted treasures are perfect souvenirs for pretty much any traveler.

Tsaghkadzor is a ski resort of Armenia, located on the picturesque slopes of Mount Tanegiz, at an altitude of 1840 m, which is 10 meters below the highest ski station of French resort Courchevel. 13 Places in Yerevan, Armenia You Should Visit!
By [ Gregori Saghyan

1. Republic Square and National Gallery and Armenia History Museum

Here in Armenia, Republic Square is considered to be one of 10 most beautiful squares of the world. Well, unfortunately, I couldn't find the source but I totally agree with the statement. Republic Square is really thrilling. It was constructed from 1924 to 1929. Its architect is a genial Armenian architect - A. Tamanyan who also designed Yerevan in general. The square is surrounded by The National Gallery and The History Museum, The Ministry of Territorial Administration of Armenia, The Government House, The Central Post-Office of Armenia,

2. Matenadaran

One can think that Matenadaran - The Ancient Manuscripts Museum could be a boring place. However, it is just the first and false impression. I am only 22 years old and I can tell that Matenadaran was awesome. Every single book, every single page of the books covers a very interesting story. I will bring just one example. The heaviest book in Matenadaran was around 34 kg. During Armenian Genocide it was carried out from Turkey by two sisters. They cut the book into 2 pieces - 17 kg each and tied to their bodies. One of them died during their escape from Turkey and her piece was lost.

3. Opera House

Opera House is the other great building by the genial A. Tamanyan. Located in the heart of Yerevan, it is indeed a piece of art from outside and of course it is magnificent inside. It would be enough to say that it is one of few Opera Theatres in the world that were able to perform Aida of Giuseppe Verdi but one should also know that Opera House has held concerts of such artists as Charles Aznavour,

4. Tsitsernakaberd and Genocide Museum

Tsitsernakaberd is the place where Armenians gather to remember the victims of the Armenian Genocide. Every April 24 people from Yerevan, other regions of Armenia and even a lot of Diaspora representatives walk to the eternal fire and put flowers in memory of the millions of people died during the tragedy.

5. Arin Berd or Erebuni Fortress

This is where Yerevan and modern Armenia begin. Being founded in 8th century BC and surviving to our times it is one of the oldest fortresses in the world. And it makes Yerevan one of the oldest cities of the world. Arin Berd in translation from Armenian means Fortress of Blood though it's not so scary. Indeed, this fortress is of a great historical value. So if you are interested in archeology or history, this is the place that you cannot miss!

6. Cascade and Cafesjian Museum

Cascade is my personal favorite. I go there with my friends to drink a cup of coffee and with my girlfriend to walk there. Cascade is just a masterpiece in term of architecture. From the top of cascade you can see the most beautiful panorama of Yerevan and Ararat if you are lucky enough because mostly Ararat is covered with clouds and is invisible.

7. Ararat Brandy Factory

Ararat is a symbol of Armenia but so is Ararat Brandy Factory. Any Brandy lover should know that after France the best Brandy in the world is produced in Armenia, but some even prefer Armenian Brandy to French. Ararat Brandy Factory is an old school top quality brandy maker - indeed the best one in Armenia.

8. Northern Avenue

Constructed in 2007 Northern Avenue became another beloved place for Yerevan walkers. Northern Avenue was included in Tamanyan's Yerevan city plan but he wasn't able to construct it.
It connects the 2 Yerevan Famous Squares - The Republic Square and the Freedom Square (where Opera House is located).

9. Museum of Parajyanov

Until now there are a lot of cinemaddicts that still remember the great Armenian movie director Parajyanov as he is one of the world-renowned geniuses in that sphere... Some greatest directors such as Fellini, Tarkovsky, Vigo, Antonioni, Godard and many others knew and respected Parajyanov as mastermind of his genre.

10. Museum of Saryan

Well, everybody who explores the world of art, the world of drawings should know Martiros Saryan as he is indeed a great painter. He is famous all over the world because of his ability to show the power of the colors. His paintings are very colorful and very beautiful... It is too hard to transfer that beauty by words.

Yerevan has a long-long history of thousands of years, dating back to the rise of oldest civilizations in the world.

One theory regarding the origin of Yerevan's name is the city was named after the Armenian king, Yervand IV, the last leader of the Orontid Dynasty, and founder of the city of Yervandashat. However, it is likely that the city's name is derived from the Urartian military fortress of Erebuni (Էրեբունի), which was founded on the territory of modern-day Yerevan in 782 BC by Argishti I.As elements of the Urartian language blended with that of the Armenian one, the name eventually evolved into Yerevan (Erebuni = Erevani = Erevan = Yerevan).

Early Christian Armenian chroniclers attributed the origin of the name, Yerevan, to a derivation from an expression exclaimed by Noah, in Armenian. While looking in the direction of Yerevan, after the ark had landed on Mount Ararat and the flood waters had receded, Noah is believed to have exclaimed, Yerevats! (it appeared!).

Over the past years, Yerevan transformed vividly and rapidly. Renowned for its cultural activities, museums, theaters and nightlife, it has become a major tourist destination. Yerevan is the financial and business hub of the country, and is home to many international organizations.
