A Tourist's Guide to Dakar, Senegal

From Abidjan, I fly to Dakar, capital of Senegal. I see the mighty monument, see the best mosque in West Africa, visit the Cathedral and take a stroll along a beach filled with fishing boats.

Exploring Senegal

Research Presentation

My film project is an exploration of Senegalese Culture, Religion, & Natural life. I complied my research from our summer's learning including our class excursions, independent outings, and class material.

How does history, religion, and the natural geography of Senegal influence its culture?

Senegal's Precolonial, Colonial, and Postcolonial history have greatly shaped its modern culture. Along with its natural geography and religious influences, Senegal has a vibrant and rich culture that heavily interacts with its natural world.

I begin my exploration by introducing Senegal today and it's Colonial and Post-colonial history. I discuss the influences of France on modern day Senegal and briefly talk about the transatlantic slave trade that we learned about during our visit to Goree Island.

Following Senegal's history, an introduction of Senegalese culture begins. I share my experiences with the food and social traditions in Senegal, including the delicious tradition of drinking Ataya tea. This transitions into a discussion on the predominant religions in Senegal. I begin with a culmination of visits to local mosques and The Great Mosque of Touba, including mentions of Amadou Bamba's significance to the Mouridie brotherhood. This takes my exploration into the experience of visiting a Quranic school in Dakar and the role of Quranic Education in Senegalese tradition.

Following the visit to the Quranic School, a presentation of our trip to the Monastery introduces viewers to the practice of Christianity in Senegal. I discuss the history of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Monastery and talk about how it sustains itself through cultivating its own fruits, instruments, and raising livestock.

I then follow the Monastery visit by our cultural experience in Kaolack. I talk about the lunch we had and the short after party experience we shared with the women outside the home.

This leads my exploration to our visit to Toubacouta, where a bit of nature and more Senegalese culture is further explored. I shared experiences on the tradition of drumming and dance in Senegal, followed by the importance of wrestling to many Senegalese people. This leads into our safari where Senegal's natural life and beauty is observed. After introducing some of the animals we saw on our excursion, I briefly talk about the value of animals, and the continuation of camel riding that still exists in this country.

Finally I close my video project with scenic clips of many of the beautiful beaches and breathtaking Senegalese coasts we visited, revealing the last bits of my experience with Senegal's natural beauty.

As is evident by all the video clips and photos, my main sources of research are the excursions where I was able to gather most of my data. Other sources included my class lecture notes and referencing readings we were assigned throughout the semester.

Senegal, is a country in West Africa. It is the westernmost country in the mainland of the Old World or Eurafrasia and owes its name to the Sénégal River that borders it to the east and north. Senegal covers a land area of almost 197,000 square kilometres (76,000 sq mi), and has an estimated population of about 13 million. The climate is tropical with two seasons: the dry season and the rainy season.

Senegal's capital is Dakar. During the 17th and 18th centuries, numerous trading posts belonging to various European colonial empires were established along the coast. France took control of Senegal in 1677. Senegal was granted independence from France in 1960.

Major industries are fish processing, phosphate mining, fertilizer production, petroleum refining, construction materials, ship construction and repair. Peanuts, sugarcane, cotton, green beans, industrial tomato, cherry tomato, melon, and mango are important cash crops.

Most Senegalese are Sufi Muslims or nondenominational Muslims. French is the official language. Since April 2012 Senegal's president has been Macky Sall.

Archaeological findings throughout the area indicate that Senegal was inhabited in prehistoric times and has been continuously occupied by various ethnic groups. Some kingdoms were created around the 7th century: Takrur in the 9th century, Namandiru and the Jolof Empire during the 13th and 14th centuries. Eastern Senegal was once part of the Ghana Empire.

Islam was introduced through Toucouleur and Soninke contact with the hypo-Saharan Almoravid dynasty, who in turn propagated it. The Almoravids, with the help of Toucouleur allies, used military force for conversion. This movement faced resistance from ethnicities of traditional religions, the Serers in particular.

In the 13th and 14th centuries, the area came under the influence of the empires to the east; the Jolof Empire of Senegal was also founded during this time. In the Senegambia region, between 1300 and 1900, close to one-third of the population was enslaved, typically as a result of captives taken in warfare.

In the 14th century the Jolof Empire grew powerful, having united Cayor and the kingdoms of Baol, Sine, Saloum, Waalo, Futa Tooro and Bambouk. The empire was a voluntary confederacy of various states rather than an empire built on military conquest. The empire was founded by Ndiadiane Ndiaye, a part Serer and part Toucouleur, who was able to form a coalition with many ethnicities, but collapsed around 1549 with the defeat and killing of Lele Fouli Fak by Amari Ngone Sobel Fall.

In the mid-15th century, the Portuguese landed on the Senegal coastline, followed by traders representing other countries, including the French. Various European powers—Portugal, the Netherlands, and Great Britain—competed for trade in the area from the 15th century onward. In 1677, France gained control of what had become a minor departure point in the Atlantic slave trade—the island of Gorée next to modern Dakar, used as a base to purchase slaves from the warring chiefdoms on the mainland.

Slave traders in Gorée, 18th century.
European missionaries introduced Christianity to Senegal and the Casamance in the 19th century. It was only in the 1850s that the French began to expand onto the Senegalese mainland – they had abolished slavery and promoted an abolitionist doctrine-, adding native kingdoms like the Waalo, Cayor, Baol, and Jolof Empire. French colonists progressively invaded and took over all the kingdoms except Sine and Saloum under Governor Louis Faidherbe. Senegalese resistance to the French expansion and curtailing of their lucrative slave trade was led in part by Lat-Dior, Damel of Cayor, and Maad a Sinig Kumba Ndoffene Famak Joof, the Maad a Sinig of Sine, resulting in the Battle of Logandème.

10 Best Destinations to Visit in Djibouti

Though it occupies a tiny corner in Northern Africa, Djibouti has copious amounts of beauty and sites that you really can’t believe unless you’ve seen them for yourself. Few places have such a variety of landscapes – like volcanoes, sinking plains, limestone chimneys with steam coming from the top, salt lakes, grand canyons, and gorgeous plateaus.
For those that love outdoor adventure, you’ll have plenty to keep you busy here. Enjoy snorkelling with the sharks, diving, kite surfing, and hiking. The country isn’t overly developed outside of the capital so spending time here makes for the perfect eco-travel experience as you get a peek of ancient nomadic life.
