7 Best Places to visit in Cambodia | Tired of Thailand? Give Cambodia a go. Here are seven amazing places you've got to visit.

Tired of Thailand? Want to experience a slice of ancient Southeast Asia? Give Cambodia a go.

It may not have the same Full Moon party reputation of its neighbour, nor the historical notoriety of next-door Vietnam. But don't let that put you off exploring this beautiful country, full of ancient temples and stunning landscapes - and there's plenty of cheap beer!

Having brought us the best of Vietnam, our roving reporter Cat McGloin shares her seven must-see places in Cambodia:

1. Phnom Penh

Cambodia's capital teems with tuk-tuk drivers and street food vendors. Weave through the city, spotting roadside pagodas nestled amongst grand French colonial houses. Why not try a local delicacy, deep fried tarantula? When cocktail hour calls, there's no better place to catch a sundowner and appreciate some colonial grandeur than at the Foreign Correspondence Club on the bank on the Mekong River that runs through the city.

2. The Killing Fields

Just outside Phnom Penh lies one of the largest mass graves sites in Cambodia, where it is estimated over one million Cambodians were executed during the Khmer Rouge regime. The scale of the site, coupled with the tales told over your audio guide, is deeply moving and provides real insight in to the country's violent past, as well as the regime's enduring legacy. You can couple your visit here with a trip to Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum by bargaining with a tuk-tuk driver.

3. Angkor Archaeological Park

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is by far Cambodia's, if not Southeast Asia's, largest tourist attraction. Each year thousands of visitors make the short journey north of Siem Reap to visit the magnificent remains of the capitals of the Khmer Empire, dating from the ninth century. Head out before dawn to catch the sunrise behind the site's most famous temple, Angkor Wat. Be sure to check out Angkor Thom, made famous by Lara Croft and the Tomb Raider films.

4. Siem Reap

The drop-off point for Angkor Archaeological Park, Siem Reap has developed into a tourist hub over recent years. Grab a few bargains at the night market, or get a fish pedicure for pennies, before heading to Pub Street for...well the name says it all really! For daytime tranquility, head to Wat Bo Village and relax in the gardens of the oldest Buddhist temple.

5. Sihanoukville

Fondly referred to as 'Snooky', the main reason to stop here is the beaches, beautifully sandy and not as crowded as Thailand's. With six sandy spots to chill out in, you'll be spoilt for choice. Less popular than Victory or Serendipity Beach, Otres Beach is usually quieter and a good spot to try your hand at windsurfing or kayaking.

6. Koh Rong

Forget Koh Samui, Koh Rong is the new desert island paradise. Only accessible by a small local ferry, not many travellers make the short ride out from Sihanoukville to this picturesque spot. With 23 pristine beaches to choose from, you'll be tempted to laze the days away in the sunshine. For the adventurous, there's plenty of opportunities for hiking, diving and snorkelling. You'll find cheap cocktails, tasty Khmer food and the best sunset sea view at Monkey Island.

7. Kampot

Once famous for its salt and pepper production, Kampot is a charming riverside town. Days spent watching the river, slurping noodles in the market and cycling through the hills are what this place was made for. If you're feeling adventurous, take a trip 20km out of Kampot and visit the French colonial ghost town, Bokor Hill Station. Originally a retreat for colonial settlers, it was abandoned when the Khmer Rouge took control of the area in the 1970's and has remained eerily untouched ever since. #travel, #traveltips, #travelnfx, #tourism

WHAT NO ONE TELLS YOU ABOUT CAMBODIA 🇰🇭✈️

Welcome to Cambodia! So you are ready for a trip of a lifetime. Here are the things you need to know before traveling to Cambodia.

Next vlog: Off the grid in Phnom Kulen waterfall, near Siem Reap:
►►

This video is aimed at a US audience, but these tips can help everyone.

First, you will need a visitor visa, which is $36 USD and can be purchased online or at the airport with CASH only.

►► Cambodia Visa:

Next, we visit the Siem Reap airport, which has many conveniences, including chain restaurants like Starbucks. Cambodia is one of a handful of countries that does not have McDonalds.

Now time to talk accommodations. We stayed at the Le Meridien, which is roughly $95 USD per night and comes with spacious rooms that can easily be shared to cut expenses. We chose this option because it is minutes from Angkor Wat. Another option is the Naga Angkor, or the Angkor Heart Bungalows.

► ► 4-5 Star: Le Meridien:
► ► 3-4 Star: Angkor Heart Bungalow:

► ► 2-3 Star Hostel:

Next, check the travel advisory site before your visit. It will contain any warnings and highlight any vaccines you may need. One precaution you must take is malaria, so bring bug spray.

► ► US State Dept. Travel Advisory:

Dress code is also important because to get into the temples, you will need proper attire. Bring lightweight fabrics, pants, and shirts that cover your shoulders. Don't forget walking shoes.

Lastly, always travel with peace of mind with travel insurance. You can get a quote online for travel insurance at World Nomads.

10. Preah Vihear
Preah Vihear is a Khmer temple situated atop a 525 meter (1,722 ft) cliff in the Dângrêk Mountains, on the border between Cambodia and Thailand. It has the most spectacular setting of all the Khmer temples. Most of the temple was constructed in the 11th and 12th century during the reigns of the Khmer kings Suryavarman I and Suryavarman II. It was dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva.

9. Sihanoukville
Sihanoukville, also known as Kampong Som, is a port city and beach resort on the Gulf of Thailand. The big attraction here are the white-sand beaches and several undeveloped tropical islands. Sihanoukville is a good place to relax and unwind, though be prepared to battle the crows during the high season or a holiday weekend.

8. Tonle Sap
Tonlé Sap is the largest freshwater lake in South East Asia and is of major importance to Cambodia. The lake expands and shrinks dramatically with the seasons. From November to May, Cambodia’s dry season, the Tonlé Sap drains into the Mekong River at Phnom Penh. However, when the year’s heavy rains begin in June, the flow of the Tonlé Sap changes directions and an enormous lake forms.

7. Silver Pagoda
Located within the Royal Palace compound in Phnom Penh, the Silver Pagoda houses many national treasures such as gold and jeweled Buddha statues. Most notable is a small 17th century baccarat crystal Buddha (the Emerald Buddha of Cambodia) and a life-sized gold Maitreya Buddha decorated with 9584 diamonds.

6. Bokor Hill Station
Bokor Hill Station near Kampot was built by the French in the 1920s to be used as a retreat from the heat of Phnom Penh. It has since been abandoned twice, first in the 1940s when the Japanese invaded Cambodia and again in the 1970s, when the Khmer Rouge engulfed the country. Today, Bokor Hill Station and its abandoned buildings have an eerie, ghost-town feel.

5. Kratie
Kratie is a small town located on the banks of the Mekong River and is dominated by a central marketplace surrounded by old, French colonial buildings. There’s no large scale tourism, but plenty of backpackers pour through here during the peak season. It is the place in Cambodia to see the rare Irrawaddy dolphins, which live in the Mekong River in ever-diminishing numbers.

4. Koh Ker
Koh Ker was the capital of the Khmer empire for a very brief period from the year 928 to 944 AD. In this short time some very spectacular buildings and immense sculptures were constructed. The site is dominated by Prasat Thom, a 30 meter (98 ft) tall temple pyramid rising high above the surrounding jungle. A giant Garuda (mythical half-man, half-bird creature), carved into the stone blocks, still guard the very top, although its partially covered now. Left to the jungle for nearly a millennium, Koh Ker was one of Cambodia’s most remote and inaccessible temple destinations.

3. Banteay Srei
Although officially part of the Angkor complex, Banteay Srei lies 25 km (15 miles) north-east of the main group of temples, and therefore often considered a separate Cambodia attraction. The temple was completed in 967 AD and is built largely of red sandstone, a medium that lends itself to the elaborate decorative wall carvings which are still clearly visible today.

2. Bayon Temple
Part of the world famous destination of Angkor, the Bayon temple features a sea of over 200 massive stone faces looking in all direction. The curious smiling faces, thought by many to be a portrait of king Jayavarman VII himself or a combination of him and Buddha, are an instantly recognizable image of Angkor. Built in the 12th century by King Jayavarman VII as part of a massive expansion of his capital Angkor Thom, the Bayon is built at the exact center of the royal city.

1. Angkor Wat
Angkor Wat (meaning “City Temple”) is the most magnificent and largest of all Angkor temples and the top tourist attraction in Cambodia. Built around the first half of 12th century by King Suryavarman II, the temple’s balance, composition and beauty make it one of the finest monuments in the world. A huge rectangular reservoir surrounds Angkor Wat which rises up through a series of three rectangular terraces to the central shrine and tower at a height of 213 meters (669 feet).

5 Best Places to Visit in Cambodia

5 Best Places to Visit in Cambodia

Best known as both the home of the colossal temples of Angkor Wat and for the brutal Khmer Rouge era of the 1970s and later civil war, Cambodian history encompasses both some of humanity's greatest artistic accomplishments and most horrific deeds. The history is what draws most travelers here, but this Southeast Asian nation has more to offer for those who linger longer than a short temple hop to Siem Reap. The coastline of sandy white beaches tempts every sun sloth. Jungle-swathed countryside is geared up for the more intrepid, and the buzzing capital of Phnom Penh envelops visitors in the frenetic pulse of contemporary Cambodian city life. Beyond the temples, and recovering from the atrocities that rained down on the country in the late 20th century, Cambodia is an emerging destination for Southeast Asia travels that manages to charm all who come

10 Things Not to Do in Cambodia

Get more Tips here!

Travelers to Cambodia still need to be wary when they head to the beautiful country. If you want to make the most of a trip to Cambodia, here are some simple tips and suggestions to help make it the journey of a lifetime.

1. Don’t Help the Children
Okay, that sounds wickedly insensitive. The kids approaching on the street are likely being forced into begging or selling or even asking for basic needs like milk and books. Those children aren’t getting anything you give them, that's why.

2. Don't wear jewelry
Keep your valuables securely in your pocket until you absolutely need to use them. Don’t carry a backpack or a purse. Leave the jewelry at home. Generally try to affect an appearance of having little to no cash on your person.

3. Don't use your left hand
Just like in a lot of Asian countries, the left hand is considered to be unclean. So, it’s best to avoid indicating objects, greeting people, eating, or basically touching anything with your left hand.

4. Don't forgets pickpockets
If you go to Phnom Penh’s bustling night spots, you'll have a good time. However, take as few valuables as possible, sit with your back to a wall so no one can slink up behind you and be sure to keep a close eye on your cash.

5. Don’t Exchange Your American Dollars For Riels
The currency in Cambodia is the riel. It takes about 4,000 riels to equal a dollar. As a result, even Cambodians don’t particularly care for the riel. Most establishments will happily accept US dollars. Great!

6. Don't be disrespectful
Cambodia is home to the largest religious monument in the world, Angor Wat. The complex actively welcomes visitors, but it’s also a functioning religious site. When you visit, make sure you treat the place with the respect it’s due.

7. Don't speak English with certain people
The most popular language in Cambodia is English. However, con artists and criminals will approach you and strike up an English conversation. If that happens, pretend you speak German. Or French. It’ll make any undesirables go away that much faster.

8. Don't be careless on a Tuk Tuk
These are essentially just carriages strapped to the back of bikes or motorcycles. Some drivers will take you far out of the way and then charge to get you back on the right course. There are more scams, so be careful.

9. Don’t Point at Anything
In Cambodia, it’s pretty easy to make a mistake while gesticulating. Pointing is considered extremely rude. Instead, indicate directions and the like by holding out your open right hand.

10. Don't receive a non-legit Massage
Some of these establishments are legit and you have nothing to fear but the loss of your tension. Others, however, exploit their workers and treat them as virtual slaves. So, if you head to a massage parlor, go to a legit one.

Where do you want to know what not to do in next?
