Cape Town sits on South Africa’s Cape Peninsula, where the waters of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans converge.

Begin your adventure at The Castle of Good Hope, the centerpoint from which the city grew. Nearby you’ll find Company’s Garden, the Parliament Building, and the South African Museum.

Don’t miss the District Six Museum, which gives voice to the 60,000 non-white residents who saw their vibrant multi-racial neighborhood flattened during the darkest days of the Apartheid era.

One neighborhood that was spared from apartheid’s wrecking ball is Bo-Kaap, where traditional Cape Malay culture continues amid the row houses of this colorful hillside suburb.

Visit the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, and explore attractions such as Two Oceans Aquarium. The waterfront is also the gateway to one of the world’s most infamous prisons, Robben Island.

Table Mountain is Cape Town’s most beloved landmark. From the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, take a walking trail up the mountain, or take the Cableway for the spectacular ride to the viewing area.

Cape Town is one of the world’s great beach cities. From Green Point, the site of Cape Town’s futuristic stadium, follow the coast and discover one incredible beach after another.

Cape Town’s riches don’t end with its beaches, it’s also blessed with some of the best wine country in the world. After touring the acclaimed wineries of Paarl and Stellenbosch, head up Franschhoek Pass and wander hillsides filled with Proteas.

In local tradition, the Protea represents transformation, courage and hope. Cape Town is a city which shares the same soil, so it’s not surprising that it embodies those same qualities too.

10 Things NOT to Do in the Canary Islands

The Canary Islands, see nine million tourists annually. Before you can enjoy the gorgeous oasis and beautiful mountains of this archipelago of islands, here are 10 things NOT to do during your trip.

1. Don’t Purchase Electronics
If you find yourself in dire need of a new electronic, the islands aren’t the best place to make a purchase. Some electronics shops sell bootleg products, or they try to pass off second-hand items as brand new.

2. Don’t Agree to a Timeshare
They have a selling tactic that includes a scratch-off ticket, and you will always be a winner! These offers will push you to redeem your prize at a local hotel. Then, you’ll be scammed into signing a dishonest timeshare contract with a hefty fee.

3. Don’t Ignore the Beach Signs
The red flag means no swimming. Even if the water looks calm. When the yellow and green flags are waving, it’s best to stick to the patrolled areas. Also, be cautious of jellyfish in the springtime. Avoid swimming and walking around with your shoes off.

4. Don’t Visit Cruz de Tejeda
If you’re looking for sweeping views of the mountains and beaches, skip out this area entirely. Since it’s just 5,000-feet above sea level, there isn’t much of a view. Instead, head out to Mirador del Barranco del Carmen, La Palma to see stunning views of the rugged coastline.

5. Don’t Get a Late Start to See El Teide
If seeing Tenerife’s legendary volcano, El Teide, is on your to-do list, make sure you head out early in the morning. To avoid the crowd, try to arrive by 9 a.m. the latest.

6. Don’t Confuse a Pickpocketer for Someone In Need
Gran Canaria is a relatively low-crime area, but a common tactic is for pickpocketers to pose as beggars. They will get really close to their victim and quickly reach into their pockets to snatch their money and possessions.

7. Don’t Fall for the Puerto de la Cruz Scam
You’ll notice a lot of the locals walking around with pet monkeys, snakes, and parrots. They’ll sometimes place the animals on a child’s shoulders and allow the parents’ to take a photo. After the picture is taken, they’ll demand an insane amount of money.

8. Don’t Go to the Tenerife Beaches
If you want golden sand to wiggle your toes in, the beach in Tenerife shouldn’t be on your list. Since it’s the site of a volcano, most of the beaches are full of black sand that will scorch your feet! For a real sandy beach, head to Los Cristianos instead.

9. Don’t Take the Train Ride In Corralejo
They promise to take you on a tour. After boarding, you’ll realize the tour simply consists of a quick trip around Corralejo’s back streets, and travelers have complained that the tour guides aren’t very knowledgeable.

10. Don’t Accept “Free” Food
Vendors selling slices of pineapple will allow you to “try” a slice – only to demand you pay them up to eight Euro per piece! Just remember, nothing is free. If a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

In this video of our series Best Sailing Destinations we give our personal 8 reasons to love Cape Verde, especially Sao Vicente and Mindelo. It is not a traveling guide, rather a personal declaration of love to this small African country that - we hope - will inspire you to travel there one day.

Perhaps you have made the experience that the rougher the land the friendlier its inhabitants.

Cape Verde is such a place. The land, basically the tops of oceanic volcanoes, is hostile and for a good reason was uninhabited until the Portuguese settled on it in the 16th century: Cape Verde has almost no natural water resources.

But the rough living conditions have made the Cape Verdeans very friendly and hospitable.

The mix of African and European cultures made them tolerant and is enriching for Cape Verdean music and art.

All this makes this tiny archipelago on the Western tip of Africa, that many people haven’t even heard of, a worthwhile travel destination.

This video is not a travel guide. We give eight reasons why we love Cape Verde. We hope we can inspire you to put Cape Verde on your travel wish list.

The Cape Verde Islands

Green mountains, barren rocks and wide beaches: This documentary presents life and survival on the idiosyncratic Cape Verde Islands in the middle of the Atlantic, where the islanders confront difficulties with a smile.
Clad in just a protective suit and a mask, José Antonio catches lobsters with his bare hands in the up to 10-meter-deep waters off the beach and surf island of Sal, then sells them to restaurants in Santa Maria.
From the harbour on São Vicente, ferries leave bound for the neighbouring green island of Santo Antão. They transport vegetables, goats and normal passengers - well, death defying would be the better description. Several of the aged tugs ended their journeys on the seabed.
Lucia Lopez carries her wares from the islands fish market on her head, over a high mountain and into the remote village of Covada - on foot and mostly with a smile on her lips.

The family genes and traditions of two continents have produced a population with various characteristics of both culture and lifestyle. The islands offer many kinds of fresh food as well as products from around the world. São Vicente is a centre of culture and its colourful mansions are reminiscent of the heyday of the original city. Explorer Diego Alfonso would not have dreamed that one day the port would become a large maritime coal storage depot indeed, the first overseas telephone cable was laid through it. Great explorers once sailed in this region where fishing and salt defined the islanders’ lives. All around, volcanic mountains, desert landscapes and tropical valleys.
