48 Hours in Tajikistan 2016: Explore Dushanbe and the Fann Mountains

Brand New Episode! 48 Hours in Greenland 2018: Inuits, Icebergs and Insane Hikes
Travel to Tajikistan probably isn’t your first choice when thinking about a weekend away from Dubai. My first reaction when we booked Tajikistan was… what have we gotten ourselves into...?

It is definitely a destination to consider, so let us convince you why we think Tajikistan is the hidden gem of Central Asia.

Between the unexpected language barrier, money issues (see Tips below), cleanliness of the streets, gorgeous landscapes and incredibly friendly people, we had our share of everything that makes a weekend trip like this so special.

So here goes, we'll try to pack as many helpful tips below as possible so you can enjoy an incredible 48 hours of travel to Tajikistan as well.

Travel to Tajikistan - Questions & Answers:

How to travel to Tajikistan from Dubai?

The best way to travel to Tajikistan from Dubai is by plane. We took a very convenient flight with Somon Air from DXB to Dushanbe, Tajikistan. Comfortable and efficient, the flight cost us AED 1,300 each ($330). Somon Air is the new national airline of Tajikistan and while they remain a majority domestic airline, we were surprised at how clean, comfortable and easy the flight was. Considering it was an airline we had never heard of before and our ticket confirmations were all in Tajik, we were skeptical.

What is the weather like in Tajikistan?

We went to Tajikistan in July, and the weather was absolutely beautiful, especially coming from oven-like Dubai. Think 25 degrees during the day, going down to 20 during the night. No humidity, and sun all day long!

If you are going to head up to the Fann mountains, and you'd be insane not to, bring a long sleeve shirt, especially if you go at night. The mountains were topped with snow, even in the middle of the summer.

What to do during 48 Hours in Tajikistan?

1 - Visit the World's Tallest Flagpole

Dushanbe is the capital of Tajikistan, and while it’s small, it is very lively. The tallest flag pole is Trip Advisor’s number 1 attraction, but don't be fooled, it’s worth going to see just to people watch! While the flag and flag pole are interesting themselves it really is the amazingly beautiful setting of the park, the perfectly taken care of gardens, statues, lakes and people strolling that make it so fun to walk through. Drinks and snacks are sold by multiple vendors and you won't need more than a couple bucks to enjoy an afternoon. If you aren't careful, you might get dragged into a Tajik wedding celebration so bring you dancing shoes!

2 -Trek to the Seven Lakes

Hiking and trekking are very popular in Tajikistan. Although they are more suited to a longer stay, it is recommended to tackle the seven lakes trek - made up of seven lakes around the mountains, each one a different color. While a trek will take more time, getting up into the mountains even for a couple hours is an absolute must.

3 - Explore the Hissar Fort

Hissar Fort is only 30 minutes away from Dushanbe city centre, and is an absolute must do. The architecture is gorgeous and the history about it fascinating. We had no idea what to expect but were floored when we arrived to see such an incredible ancient fort, from the 1200's, looking so beautiful and with such a well preserved setting. Getting lost in the old fort and surrounding buildings is very interesting and there is even a watering hole from a natural spring and horseback riding for the kids.

4 - Climb the Fann Mountains

The Fann Mountains are beautiful, and if you have the time we strongly recommend to get up there, if only to admire the view over the valley. If you are scared of heights like me (Anne), it’s a bit of a love/hate moment, but it’s worth it. Stop on the way at one of the artisanal honey making stands along the road and taste organic Tajik honey - honestly the best we’ve ever tasted. Bee careful of bee stings (see what I did there...)

5 - Stroll through Rudaki Park

Rudaki Park (named after the famous Tajik poet) is the central heart beat of Dushanbe and left us quite speechless after getting lost in its seemingly endless sections.

6 - Be a Child at Boghi Poytakht

Plan a trip to Boghi Poytakht Park and the Botanical Garden, both located close to each other on the outskirts of Dushanbe, which is already a small city. The botanical gardens are vast and relaxing to visit while Boghi Poytakht Park is a bustling amusement park complete with roller coasters, a huge ferris wheel and is even connected to a gigantic water park - which we were gutted to run out of time to visit.

Tajik cuisine:
Tajik cuisine is a traditional cuisine of Tajikistan, and has much in common with Russian, Afghan, and Uzbek cuisines. Plov (pilaf) (Tajik: палав, Uzbek: palov), also called osh (Tajik: ош), is the national dish in Tajikistan, as in other countries in the region. Green tea is the national drink.
Palav or osh, generically known as plov (pilaf), is a rice dish made with shredded yellow turnip or carrot, and pieces of meat, all fried together in vegetable oil or mutton fat in a special qazan (a wok-shaped cauldron) over an open flame. The meat is cubed, the carrots are chopped finely into long strips, and the rice is colored yellow or orange by the frying carrots and the oil. The dish is eaten communally from a single large plate placed at the center of the table, often in with one's hands in the traditional way.
Another traditional dish that is still eaten with hands from a communal plate is qurutob, whose name describes the preparation method: qurut (Tajik: қурут, dried balls of salty cheese) is dissolved in water (Tajik: об, ob) and the liquid is poured over strips of а thin flaky flatbread (patyr or fatir, Tajik: фатир, or more accurately фатир равғанӣ, fatir ravghani, i.e., fatir made with butter or tallow for flakiness). Before serving the dish is topped with onions fried in oil until golden and other fried vegetables. No meat is added. Qurotob is considered the national dish.
Meals are almost always served with non (Tajik: нон), flatbread found throughout Central Asia. If a Tajik has food but not non, he will say he is out of food. If non is dropped on the ground, people will put it up on a high ledge for beggars or birds. Legend holds that one is not supposed to put non upside down because this will bring bad luck. The same holds true if anything is put on top of the non, unless it is another piece of non.
Traditional Tajik soups include mainly meat and vegetable soups (such as shurbo and piti), and meat soups with noodles (such as laghmon and ugro). Other dishes shared regionally, either as fast food or as an appetizer, include manti (steamed meat dumplings), tushbera (pelmeni), sambusa (a triangular pastry with either a meat and onion stuffing or a pumpkin and onion stuffing, baked in a tandoor oven), and belyash (pl. belyashi, Tajik: беляши, deep-fried cakes made of yeast dough and filled with minced meat, similar to pirozhki).
Soviet cuisine both influenced and was in turn influenced by Tajik cuisine.Wikipedia

9 Breathtaking Destinations in Central Asia

From turquoise-colored lakes to ancient walled cities, the “Five Stans” of Central Asia are home to some breathtaking sites that deserve a spot on traveler’s bucket lists.

Spanning 1.5 million square miles, the “Five Stans” include Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzebekistan, Kyrgystan and Kazakstan and are home to nearly 68 million people. All of these countries share a common legacy of nomadic heritages tied to the famous Silk Road that spans across them.

Tajik Food - Osh and Kurotob

We tried out some delicious traditional food while we were in Tajikistan. Osh, also called Pilaf, is a common dish in Central Asia. You can find it in neighbouring countries like Uzbekistan and Krygystan. We ate it at one of the oldest restaurants in Dushanbe. We then went to 103 (the part of Dushanbe where you get Kurotob) and ordered the amazing dish called Kurotob. It was some of the best food we had while in Tajikistan.

Both of them are super delicious and you should definitely try them out if you get a chance.

Big thanks to our friend Adam for grabbing both lunches with us and helping us enjoy those meals. Can't wait to eat more delicious food.

5 UNIQUE and UNUSUAL Places to Visit in BERLIN!

Interested in exploring some of the most unique and unusual places in Berlin? Then check this video out for 5 interesting recommendations!

Hey everybody and welcome back to another episode of Triple P where we explore people, places and palates together. So guys I am super excited because this weekend I took a trip from Munich to Berlin, the capital city of Germany, to explore five of the most unique and unusual sites in this hot and happening city. And I am really excited to take you guys through these great places! So let’s get started.

Number 1: Hidden Street Art Alley

As some of you may know, Berlin is bursting with creativity especially its street art scene. Little further up from the famous Hackescher Markt, lies a hidden alley with amazing murals, tags, paste-ups and graffiti. Some of them by famous street artists such as El Bocho, Stinkfish and even the famous depiction of Anne Frank by Jimmy C. An amazing place to take photos and to get those creative juices flowing!

Address: Rosenthalerstrasse 39

Number 2: The Tajikistan Tearoom

If you’re looking for a slice of central Asia in the heart of Berlin, look no further. This tearoom is beautifully decorated with Persian pillars, carpets, and ornaments but also adds in a blend of Russian culture especially found in its delicious food. As for the tea itself, I had a very interesting one called “Lommonossow-Tee” from the eastern banks of the Black Sea which was served with jam and rum raisins. Definitely a unique experience!

Address: Oranienburgerstrasse 27

Number 3: The Controversial Pergamon Museum

If you are looking for an impressive historical art museum then you have to visit this amazing place situated in Berlin’s Museum Islands. You will be mesmerised by not only the remarkable Ishtar Gate, the Roman Market Gate of Miletus but also the fascinating collection in the Museum of Islamic Art. Do note though that there has been controversy over the fact that many of the extraordinary artefacts were transported from Turkey and should be returned. Nevertheless, a definite must visit for anyone visiting Berlin!

Address: Bodestrasse 1-3

Number 4: Extraordinary “Badeschiff”

Have you ever been to a floating swimming pool within a moored vessel? I’m guessing not! Head on over to this awesome summer hang out spot designed by Susanne Lorenz as part of a competition for city arts projects. This large pool floats on the River Spree where guests can enjoy the panoramic views of the city centre, while sipping on cocktails and even taking part in yoga classes or a game of beach volleyball. Sounds like fun eh?

Address: Eichenstrasse 4

Number 5: Ever Changing Markthalle Neun

This food market is really unique in that it changes its personality depending on the date. On Thursday evenings it becomes a Street Food Market bustling with culinary delicacies such as British Pies, Thai tapioca dumplings, Mexican Tacos or even Nigerian FuFu. On every third Sunday of the month, it becomes a Breakfast Market while once in a quarter it becomes a Snack Market filled with sweet and savoury delights. It even hosts amazing food festivals such as the Berlin Coffee Festival and Cheese festival! If you’re a foodie, this is the place to be.

Address: Eisenbahnstrasse 42-43
