Maseru in Lesotho, travel, hotels, holiday, business, resorts, Basotho Hat shop
,Maseru has a total of six hotels, two of which, the Lesotho Sun and the Maseru Sun,.[18][19] During the 1960s, prior to the relaxation of South Africa's g were popular attractions among South African visitors, but the interest in them has since waned.[19] The Basotho Hat shop at the city's entrance is a popular source for souvenirs.[5]
The main tourist attractions of Lesotho, Lancer's Gap, Sani Pass, Afriski resort, Katse dam, Thaba Bosiu and the Maluti Mountains are located a short distance from Maseru. However, distances are deceiving in Lesotho as even a 120 km trip can take over 3 hours due to the rugged terrain.

Most of the traditional thatched-roof mud-brick houses, called rondavels, have been replaced with modern housing and office blocks which have a tint of traditional architecture. There have recently been some new buildings in the center of the city, particularly the building across LNDC center which now houses Good times cafe, a Vodacom shop, offices and the new building of the Ministry of Health which was completed in late 2007.

Lesotho, officially the Kingdom of Lesotho, is a landlocked country completely surrounded by South Africa. It is just over 30,000 km2 (11,583 sq mi) in size and has a population slightly over two million. Its capital and largest city is Maseru. Lesotho is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. The name Lesotho translates roughly into the land of the people who speak Sesotho.[5] About 40% of the population lives below the international poverty line of US $1.25 a day.

The earliest known inhabitants of the area were Khoisan hunter-gatherers. The Sotho–Tswana peoples colonized the general region of South Africa between the third and 11th centuries.

The present Lesotho, then called Basutoland, emerged as a single polity under King Moshoeshoe I in 1822. Moshoeshoe, a son of Mokhachane, a minor chief of the Bakoteli lineage, formed his own clan and became a chief around 1804. Between 1821 and 1823, he and his followers settled at the Butha-Buthe Mountain, joining with former adversaries in resistance against the Lifaqane associated with the reign of Shaka Zulu from 1818 to 1828.

Subsequent evolution of the state hinged on conflicts between British and Dutch colonists leaving the Cape Colony following its seizure from the French-allied Dutch by the British in 1795, and subsequently associated with the Orange River Sovereignty and subsequent Orange Free State. Missionaries invited by Moshoeshoe I, Thomas Arbousset (fr), Eugène Casalis (fr) and Constant Gosselin (fr) from the Paris Evangelical Missionary Society, placed at Morija, developed orthography and printed works in the Sotho language between 1837 and 1855. Casalis, acting as translator and providing advice on foreign affairs, helped to set up diplomatic channels and acquire guns for use against the encroaching Europeans and the Griqua people.

Trekboers from the Cape Colony showed up on the western borders of Basutoland and claimed land rights, beginning with Jan de Winnaar, who settled in the Matlakeng area in May–June 1838. As more Boers were moving into the area they tried to colonise the land between the two rivers, even north of the Caledon, claiming that it had been abandoned by the Sotho people. Moshoeshoe subsequently signed a treaty with the British Governor of the Cape Colony, Sir George Thomas Napier that annexed the Orange River Sovereignty that many Boers had settled. These outraged Boers were suppressed in a brief skirmish in 1848. In 1851 a British force was defeated by the Sotho army at Kolonyama, touching off an embarrassing war for the British. After repulsing another British attack in 1852, Moshoeshoe sent an appeal to the British commander that settled the dispute diplomatically, then defeated the Tlokoa in 1853.

In 1854 the British pulled out of the region, and in 1858 Moshoeshoe fought a series of wars with the Boers in the Free State–Basotho War, losing a great portion of the western lowlands. The last war in 1867 ended when Moshoeshoe appealed to Queen Victoria, who agreed to make Basutoland a British protectorate in 1868. In 1869, the British signed a treaty at Aliwal North with the Boers that defined the boundaries of Basutoland, and later Lesotho, which by ceding the western territories effectively reduced Moshoeshoe's Kingdom to half its previous size.

Following the cession in 1869, the British initially transferred functions from Moshoeshoe's capital in Thaba Bosiu to a police camp on the northwest border, Maseru, until administration of Basutoland was transferred to the Cape Colony in 1871. Moshoeshoe died on 11 March 1870, marking the end of the traditional era and the beginning of the colonial era, and was buried at Thaba Bosiu. During their rule between 1871 and 1884, Basutoland was treated similarly to territories that had been forcefully annexed, much to the chagrin of the Basotho. This led to the Gun War in 1881.[8] In 1884, Basutoland was restored its status as a protectorate, with Maseru again its capital, but remained under direct rule by a governor, though effective internal power was wielded by traditional chiefs.

Basutoland gained its independence from Britain and became the Kingdom of Lesotho in 1966.

In January 1970, the ruling Basotho National Party (BNP) lost the first post-independence general elections, with 23 seats to the Basutoland Congress Party's 36. Prime Minister Leabua Jonathan refused to cede power to the Basotho Congress Party (BCP), declared himself Tona Kholo (Sesotho translation of prime minister), and imprisoned the BCP leadership.

David’s Been Here travels through Lesotho to explore what many call “the Kingdom in the Sky.” Lesotho is the only country in the world to be entirely above 1,000 meters above sea level. David’s favorite hotel in Lesotho was the Maliba Mountain Lodge in Tsehlanyane National Park, which he profiles in this video.

The lodge graciously hosted David in a luxurious chalet with double beds, beautiful vistas, wood burning fireplace, and handcrafted furniture. The Maliba Lodge has 6 mountainside chalets for couples and 4 river chalets that can accommodate up to 8 people.

People come to Lesotho to enjoy the natural landscapes and local culture. Maliba Lodge took David horseback riding, on a village tour, and gave him a much-needed back massage at the hotel spa.

Some of the features that make Maliba Mountain Lodge so great is the free Wi-Fi, heated floors, and heated beds (yes, you read that right). David then lets Daniel, the hotel’s Guest Relations Manager, say a little bit more about the property.

Daniel explains that the hotel is situated in the northern part of the country. It has two room types: the 5-star mountain chalets and the 3-star self-catering cottages. Activities offered by Maliba Mountain Lodge include: horseback riding, hiking, spa treatments, and cultural visits to nearby villages. Guests who want to horseback ride are sent with an experienced guide and all the necessary equipment to explore the trails of Tsehlanyane National Park.

Village tours are meant to familiarize guests with the local culture. Stops include seeing the local doctor, traditional mud huts, and the local school. The video finishes by showing us the landscaped gardens and unique architecture found at Maliba.

Lesotho Highlands Tour 5th February 2018

First day of 3-day road trip through Lesotho's Maluti Mountains. At midday we left from Maseru north to Leribe & lunched at northern town of Butha-Buthe before continuing inland to climb into mountains at 2,820m high Moteng Pass. From there we traversed the 3,000 metre high 46kms long Roof of Africa road past the Afriski mountain resort & Letseng Diamond Mine before descending into the deep valleys to small town of Mapholaneng, and further on east towards Mokhotlong. The highway descends down to a river crossing of the great Senqu River of Lesotho - where it meets other great rivers in a confluence basin of gorges before heading south then west into South Africa to become the Orange (Gariep) River. After a brief visit to Mokhotlong we turned back & continued south along the recently constructed A31 highway following the Sehonghong River Valley until a final climb over the 3,240 metre high Koti-Sephola Pass & down to Sani Flats. A short 10km drive further on saw our arrival at Sani Mountain Lodge by 8pm, where we had a meal & stayed overnight at the nearby backpackers hostel.

Thanks for waiting, we didn't have internet this month, but I should have vlogs going up for the next week or so.

About Me //
I am 25, from Marietta, Georgia and I started this channel in 2013 in my final semester of my college. After graduating from Auburn University in Alabama I spent four months in Europe and tried my hand at vloging. You can watch the whole series here and forgive me for filming it on my iPhone. Right after traveling I moved to DC where I lived for two years. Last summer I backpacked through Central America and produced a 10 part vlog series about that as well. I currently am traveling on World Race. The World Race is an 11 month mission trip to 11 countries. I post videos almost every day, so subscribe and stay a while if you want to see more.

SEMONKONG LODGE & Lesotho Tourism

Welcome!

If you're new here, this channel is all about travel and exploring, and living a healthy and active lifestyle! During my adventures I like to play sports with the locals, go on hikes, get a taste for local cuisine (especially their take on burgers), and when I'm home you can usually find me in the gym.

I recently started my channel as I finally decided to start putting together footage from my travels. Most recently, in 2016 I lived in Australia, and now I'm currently living in Lesotho!

TODAY'S VIDEO:
A weekend away to Semonkong Lodge. Probably my favourite thing so far in Lesotho. The lodge was PERFECT, and there is TONS to do. Semonkong is home to the Maletsunyane Waterfalls, one of the highest single dropping waterfalls in Africa, as well as the Guinness World Record abseiling point.

Next video will finally be part II of Cape Town - see me as shark bait in Gansbaai.

Lesotho - Into undiscovered Land (2017) / AWARD WINNING VLOG / S01E03 #maximaCOMEPASS

After we had spent our first week as world travellers in South Africa, it was time for a little excursion to Lesotho. Lesotho is a country that we did not really know it existed and much less, where it is located until we started to plan our world tour. For some reason, we wanted to visit it and discovered an undiscovered land that we totally fell in love with.
