This is Semonkong the horse capital of Lesotho. It's located in the central part of the country. Right now we are going to walk around the market and buy a typical beanie follow me. Follow me lets go shopping!

After a bit of a negotiating I got three for 100 Rand. The beanies are made out of wool and it's the most traditional thing you can buy.

Welcome to Semonkong Lodge! If you're looking to explore central Lesotho this is the place to stay. They have a restaurant, 25 rooms and they are very close to Maletsunyane Fall's the highest single drop waterfall in the southern hemisphere. You can go pony trekking and explore Semonkong.

Next up we head to Maliba Lodge on the northern side of Lesotho. They have 6 chalets and 4 river chalets. A few different activities you can do in the area are horseback riding, village tour and a massage. They have heated floors, beds and wife.

We head out on horseback for a two hour trek in the mountains of Tsehlanyane National Park. After an incredible trek we head to the near by village of Hamadi to experience local life. At the local bar I tried some Lesotho beer which was bitter but traditional :)

Discover Lesotho the Mountain Kingdom of Africa | 90+ Countries With 3 Kids

Lesotho is a small landlocked country nestled between the Drakensberg and Maloti mountain ranges and it is completely surrounded by South Africa. Officially a Kingdom, previously known as Basutoland, and a place that we left with the regret of not staying for longer.

Green valleys, sharp mountains, rivers, nature reserves and several national parks make Lesotho a natural wonder worth exploring by any traveler. We were surprised to learn that this country is one of the 3 remaining Kingdoms in Africa (the others being Morocco and Swaziland) even though it declared independence from the United Kingdom on 4 October 1966.

The name Lesotho stands for “mountain kingdom” and that’s not a surprise as nearly ⅔ of the country consists of mountains. This country is also the proud owner of the highest low point in the world which is estimated at 1,400 meters above sea level.

Discover FRANCISTOWN: One of the Most Beautiful Cities of BOTSWANA | 10 INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT IT

Francistown boasts a lot of names including ‘Capital of the North,’ ‘Ghetto,’ ‘Toropo’ (meaning town), or ‘Ftown.’ Everyone has their way of relating with the city and engaging with its rich diverse culture. What is evident is that a convergence of cultures exists with a general Kalanga overtone. It is dubbed the capital of the North as many Kalanga villagers visit it to conduct business.

No one knows why Francistown is called “ghetto”. The Name seems to have come from the streets and caught on. Some note that it signifies a lack of development and informal settlements that rose in the city. Or maybe it signifies the presence of the old mines. What is evident though is most use it as a term of endearment. Ftown denotes Batswana’s love for nicknames. Long names just must be shortened, and formal names need a street twist. It’s how we show our affection.

'Toropo' which is jokingly pronounced with the northern accent, comes from taking a jab at the Kalanga people. It notes how the villagers often travel to town for their business. So, the expression 'to town' and how they pronounce it caught on as a name.
Botswana’s second city is not one to miss when you are in the country. As a gateway between the north and south, it is always welcoming a visitor or two. And who knows, you might fall in love and forget the rest of your journey.

Francistown is a gateway for Botswana to connect to Zimbabwe, Zambia, and DRC. In the past, it acted as a recruitment centre for miners who wanted to work the South African mines. A company called Witwatersrand Native Labour Association was formed for that purpose. Miners were recruited from many African countries like Tanzania, Malawi, and Zambia. They were then transported to South Africa via air or rail. The company’s Barracks housed these miners on their way to or from South Africa. This trade sustained the town after the mines ceased operations. A lot of the miners spent most of their money in the pubs of Francistown.

Traces of this history can be seen in the diversity of people living in Francistown. Some came to Francistown en route to South Africa and never left. Today, many tourists pass through Francistown on their way to explore the Okavango in the north of Botswana. Francistown’s economy still thrives from business brought by passing travellers. Around holidays, Batswana form part of this group as they make their way from the south to the north of the country. Both the main surface route and air route pass through Francistown.

Francistown only got its city status in 1997 when the government of Botswana decided to upgrade it from a town. This classification paved way for more developments. Francistown now boasts an international airport, High court, and sports stadium. As the government began to do more developments in the area, private developments also came along. Two private colleges now run campuses in Francistown.

With the revival of the mines, the economy of the town is bustling again with developments. The city’s road network was uplifted recently with a big interchange right in the heart of the city. A new mall is in the works and businesses are booming again. You can’t miss the growing street market selling anything from grilled fish to wire sculptures.

With the rising unemployment, young Batswana are becoming innovative at taking opportunities for themselves. At the heart of Francistown is the CBD which is always bustling with people and all types of trade. Francistown was built from one street adjacent to the railway line. As you navigate the city, this model is very apparent as every street in the CBD seems to take you to the main street. The city is also one of the few places in Botswana in which you will find one-way streets.

Top 10,Ten Popular Travel Destinations in Lesotho

Most Attractive Places in Lesotho || Mew Play

Although a small country, Lesotho boasts an assortment of fantastic attractions that tourists can visit and discover the history and heritage of both the Basotho people and the Mountain Kingdom.
Katse Dam and Botanical Gardens
Any trip to Lesotho is highlighted by a visit to Katse Dam. This is the centrepiece of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project which transfers the water of the Lesotho Highlands via an incredible conduit of dams and tunnels through the mountains, eventually dispelling out onto the plains of South Africa’s Free State Province.
Sani Pass and the Highest pub in Africa
Amazingly popular with locals and tourists alike, The Sani Pass is a remarkable area for driving, hiking or mountain biking while enjoying sprawling views of the Drakensburg Mountains. This spectacular 4×4 track twists and snakes its way through the “Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park” up into the impenetrable rocky cliffs of Lesotho’s Roof of Africa circuit that links the spectacular scenery of the Drakensberg with the attractions of Northern Lesotho.
A national Monument, Thaba-Bosiu or ”mountain of the night” was the mountain stronghold of “Moshoeshoe the Great” and is considered the birthplace of the Basotho nation. It is by far one of the most important historical sites in Lesotho and invokes a sense of identity for the proud nation Basotho.
Kome Cave Dwellings
The area used to be called ‘Liboping’ (the place of ovens) as the huts are shaped more like traditional Sotho kilns, built with rock and plastered with a mixture of mud soil and cow dung. The site is now a National Heritage Site where visitors can learn about the rich history and culture of the people.
Sehlabathebe National Park
The Sehlabathebe National Park in the south eastern region of Lesotho, although fairly inaccessible (a 4 wheel drive vehicle is required) is definitely well worth the effort. This was the first designated National park in Lesotho. This hidden gem is full of wonderful rock formations unique to this area, massive rock overhangs, small lakes, rock art, rock arches and a beautiful and unique ecosystem of plants, birds and animals.
