Netherlands: Haarlem, Alkmaar, Leiden, The Hague, Delft, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Gouda, Maastricht

Presenting a tour of the Netherlands
0:00 Introduction ; 03:26 Haarlem; 04:31 Alkmaar; 05:45 Leiden; 06:38 The Hague; 07:48 Delft; 08:54 Rotterdam; 10:11 Utrecht; 11:35 Gouda; 12:22 Maastricht ; 13:43 Conclusion
Starting with a visit to Haarlem, then to Leiden, doing a few day trips out from there. Then to Delft for three more nights and excursions to The Hague, political capital of the nation.
Then to Rotterdam the great modern city of the Netherlands, continuing to Utrecht, a university town with a large historic center and then to Maastricht in the southern part of the country. I'll also be going up to the Alkmaar cheese market which is a lot of fun.
This video is a summary of the trip through the Netherlands. We will be presenting short segments about each city here, but we have 22 movies providing a lot more details about these places so be sure to look for them in our collection.
See the 23 Dutch movies here:
Traveling between cities was so easy because the Netherlands has got perhaps the best train system in Europe. It's phenomenal. The trains are clean, fast, frequent and not expensive. This is a small country, so the cities are relatively close together, you can get from one to the next and 15 or 30 minutes usually. This superb rail service in itself makes a good reason to visit this country, shift for it really does eliminate some of those logistical problems of travel, just getting around. It is so easy with these trains.
Some call it Holland, but the country is The Netherlands. Holland is two provinces in the Netherlands.

10 Things Not to Do in Netherlands

Get more Tips here!

The Netherlands. There are so many things to discover in this wonderful country. But, before you go visit them, remember these things not to do.

1) Don't Call The Dutch Germans
A lot of people confuse the word Dutch with Deutch, and no, it's NOT the same thing! Dutch is the name of Netherland's citizens and the language they speak, whereas Deutch means German in the German language. There's a huge difference!

2) Don’t Call it Holland
The Netherlands is country with 12 provinces. It means 'lower countries' in reference to its low elevation and flat topography. But Holland is a region referring to only two of those provinces. Some use Holland to refer to the whole of the Netherlands, which is wrong. Netherland locals may take offence if you make this common mistake.

3) Don’t Abuse Drugs
Amsterdam is famous for the legalization of some narcotics. However, if during your stay, you feel inclined to partake in these usually illegal substances, remember to tread lightly. You don't want to be one of those lame, wasted tourists making a fool of themselves on the streets of Amsterdam...

4) Don’t Wander Into the Bike Lane
Back home the bike lanes may be less dangerous, but the Netherlands are so flat, it makes them ideal for cycling. Bike lanes are much more crowded and the cyclists much more ruthless when people loiter unknowingly in their designated path...

5) Don’t Forget to Tap Off
If you travel by train in the Netherlands, you need to tap your card on the reader before you board. Sure. But don't forget to tap off when you pass back through the gates even if they're already open! If you forget to tap off the counter will still be going and you'll be charged the maximum ticket fare.

6) Don't Take Pictures in the Red District
Taking pictures in the red district is not allowed, so if you are caught taking some, they can confiscate your camera or your phone. We're serious, DON'T do it.

7) Don't Use Tourist Buses
If you're in Amsterdam and want a sightseeing tour, rather than taking a bus you'll be sure to better enjoy a cruise down the many canals. There are also plenty of riverside bars and restaurants to be discovered!

8) Don't Speak Dutch
In the Netherlands they speak Dutch and English. And according to many of the locals, it's harder to master than Chinese and they prefer it if you don't try. So unless you're planning on moving there don't try and dabble in Dutch.

9) Don't Show Up Unannounced
If you want to visit someone's home or workplace, you should always phone ahead, first. They like to organize their day, and an unexpected visit may ruin their plans.

10) Don't Forget to say Goodbye
If you are with a group of people and you want to leave, don't forget to say Goodbye.
It's an important piece of social etiquette to warn in advance that you are going to leave and then shake hands as you bid farewell to everyone in the group. If you don't, they may think you're angry with them. So be polite!

Where do you want to know what no to do in next?

THE NETHERLANDS TRAVEL GUIDE

The Netherlands is a tiny country filled with historic brick filled and cobblestone laned cities, an interconnected system of canals (you can travel most of the country just via the canals), beautiful and vast farmland, iconic windmills, and even some pleasant beaches. It’s one of my favorite countries in the world.

Whether you are backpacking the Netherlands or just traveling on budget, the country’s small size makes it easy to get around. Most travelers come to the Netherlands and only party in Amsterdam for a few days, but by doing so, they miss much of what the country has to offer.Spend time exploring get out of the cities and you’ll discover the country that keeps me coming back every year

.I highly recommend heading north (especially in April or May when the tulips are in bloom) and also visiting Utrecht to see the country without the crowds!

Visit The Netherlands - What to Know Before You Visit The Netherlands

Read the Blog for More Information on The Netherlands:
Heading to The Netherlands & Not Sure What to Expect? Well here we go through the top things that tourists should know when they visit The Netherlands.
1. It is The Netherlands, Not Holland. Holland is the name of two counties in The Netherlands.
2. The language of The Netherlands is Dutch, but as a tourist you really do not need to know any Dutch as the Dutch speak English extremely well throughout the country.
3. The Euro is the currency in The Netherlands and you can find ATMs all over the country. Credit cards are widely accepted as well.
4. The Netherlands is a small country with a very well developed transportation network. Therefore you can easily take trains all over the country in a fast and efficient way. Make sure you tap in and out with your tickets as you enter your platforms.
5. Biking is a very popular pastime and way to get around Dutch cities. There are a number of bike rental agencies throughout The Netherlands. Look for one near a train station and rent a bike for the day to explore, or sign up for one of the numerous bike tours around the country.
6. The Netherlands is rather safe for tourists. Do take care with pickpockets and extremely aggressive beggars in Amsterdam's more popular areas. The bike line is for bikes only so watch out unless you want to get hit by a bike and yelled at by a local.
7. Drugs bring a lot of tourists to Amsterdam and the Dutch/German border. If you are going to The Netherlands to experiment with soft drugs make sure you go to a Coffee House they have menus and trained personnel that can help travelers. We do not recommend you do drugs and highly discourage travelers from doing this. However, we do know a number of tourists do go there for that. So please be safe, and speak with the coffee shop attendant about your previous experiences so they can help you.
9. The best things about the Netherlands are the quaint cities and towns like Haarlem, Leiden, Groningen, as well as the larger cities of Amsterdam and Rotterdam. The architecture and museums throughout the country really are outstanding. And yes you will see quite a few windmills as you explore The Netherlands.
10. The food is hearty in The Netherlands, make sure you try a bitter ballen or a traditional pancake or herring from one of the stalls. The market and food halls have tons of great treats for travelers. There are numerous international restaurants all over The Netherlands as well.
11. The Netherlands is not a cheap place to visit, however the prices are on par with the US & other major European destinations. Amsterdam accomodation will be your biggest expense. Therefore you may want to stay outside of Amsterdam to have a cheaper and more Dutch experience.
