21 Things in the US That Puzzle Most Foreigners
When you live in a country for many years, everything looks ordinary and familiar. But an outsider will always spot some curious quirks in your customs and behaviors that make them think, “What’s going on here?” Life in the US can puzzle newcomers in many ways, from buying foods and magazines in a pharmacy to deep-frying almost anything you can think of.
For example, if you’re not from the US, it may be puzzling to walk into a pharmacy and see aisles and aisles of over-the-counter meds, toys, makeup, clothes, and even groceries! In America, if a restaurant doesn’t offer free refills on fountain drinks, it’s kind of strange. But in other countries, once you buy one beverage, that’s it! And Americans speak so loud compared to other countries. Whether it’s talking on your cell phone or chatting with a friend over lunch, Americans seem to really like projecting their voice.

SUMMARY:
- When you go shopping in the US and see a price tag says $14.88, don’t expect to pay 14.88 at the register! Sales tax is NOT included in the price of an item!
- A lot of Americans don’t feel the need to take long vacations, so they often let vacation and sick hours pile up without ever using them. Plus, most employers only give you 2 weeks out of the year!
- In the States, this red plastic cup is synonymous with “party on, dude!” But other countries apparently don’t recognize this cup to mean the same thing.
- Whether it’s an ugly sweater from Grandma or a heinous pair of earrings from an ex, if you don’t like it, you can just return it!
- Cab drivers, servers, hairdressers – you gotta tip ‘em! Tips are acceptable for almost any service in the US and sometimes consist of 25% of the bill!
- Speaking of drinks, if it’s not a hot coffee or cocoa, then it’s probably got ice in it. Tea, coffee, lemonade, soda, water – Americans like it on the rocks!
- Americans must have an aversion to being hot! In many parts of Europe, people simply don’t use air conditioning as much as they do in the States.
- So many visitors to the US get really confused by the month-day-year thing because most parts of the world write the day, then the month, and finally the year.
- Walk into any grocery store aisle, and you’ll notice at least 10 different options for cookies, crackers, or cereal.
- When getting into a cab, it’s customary in the States to scoot on into the back seat. But in countries like New Zealand and Australia, riding anywhere but shotgun can be a little rude.

10 Things You Should NEVER Do in the United States 🇺🇸 The Don'ts of Visiting America
In today's travel vlog, we discuss 10 things you should never do in the United States, the Don'ts of Visiting America.
Just like any country there are things you should not do in the United States of America - I know that other countries are in America but the term has become slang for the United States. What things you should not do in the United States was fun to put together. I tried to keep it general since the US is so big and so culturally different depending on what part of the country you are in.
These things will help you when traveling to America. Some of these things are funny, some are serious and some are weird things about visiting the USA. So hop on for some travel advice about the Dont's of Visiting America!
Never just visit New York or Disney world. The US is so big and so diverse - go see other parts. You got a zillion lakes in Minnesota, the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, a fantasy outdoor, Patagonia type work on Montana, amazing Tex Mex food in Texas, the most amazing forests in Washington State, the aloha spirit of Hawaii and on and on and on. So much to see….go try something other than New York or Disney! :)
Never get out of your car when stopped by police. In many parts of the world it is customary to get out of your car when pulled over. DO NOT do this in the US!
Never forget to tip at restaurants and bars. It is customary to tip between 15-25% in the United States. Unlike most parts of the world tipping is not only expected it’s how servers make their money!
Never get too close. In the US we like our personal space. We don’t do the kiss on the cheek and we don’t usually like people in our personal space.
Never say you like or dislike Trump. We are so so polarized and divided politically in the US now, that it just wise to keep clear of that discussion. But don’t worry beyond the rhetoric most Americans are pretty good people.
Never think you can rely on public transportation. Other than a few cities like New York and DC - the US does not have good public transportation. And if you are in smaller towns and rural areas - you’ll find no public transportation. We are very much a car culture.
Never call Soccer Football! Football is a different thing in the Unites States. If you say football, we going to think you’re talking about American football. And even further, don't try to convince an American your version of Football is better than ours. It doesn’t matter that your football is the #1 sport in the rest of the world. In our country our football is #1 and Soccer isn’t even close!
Never expect Americans to be able to speak any language other than English. Unfortunately, it’s just not something we prioritize in the US. Im just as guilty as anyone, because of the influence of US pop culture and tourism - most places I’ve been, I can get by speaking English. We don’t NEED to speak another language and there isn’t much desire to be bilingual in the US.
Never expect our pharmacies to sell just pharmaceutical stuff. In most other countries, pharmacies only have pharmaceutical products. US pharmacies are more like general stores. You can get your pharmaceutical products but you can also get groceries, toys and even beach equipment!
Never drink before you’re 21. Most of the rest of the world has much lower drinking ages. Heck, in Vietnam you can drink at any age! Not in the US. Drinking laws are very, very stick. Never drink in public. Most cities and states have strict open container laws. 17 House Details in the US That Puzzle Foreigners
The Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave… and apparently huge freezing-cold houses with weird sockets? What’s so strange about American homes? Well, when non-American people find themselves in American houses they often point out how bizarre some things are.
Wearing shoes inside is one of the things that confuse foreigners, cause most of the world has a pretty strict policy about taking your shoes off at the front door. Also, Americans usually don't have tea kettle in the kitchen, and their toilet bowls are full of water. Interested? So let's see what an ordinary American home looks like!

#America #USA #Americanhomes
Music by Epidemic Sound
SUMMARY:
- The typical American home is pretty big and spacious compared to other countries.
- There are closets for clothes in each bedroom, usually one near the front door for coats and shoes, one in the bathroom or hallway for towels, one in the kitchen in the form of a pantry.
- Speaking of rooms, there’s also usually one just for doing laundry. Also, most Americans have both a washer AND a separate dryer, and they tend to be big too!
- A lot of American homes have gorgeous finished basements that serve as another living space. It might be in the form of a guest room or a recreational area to hang out in.
- Fire safety is taken so seriously in the States that landlords can get in big trouble if they don’t immediately fix a non-working smoke alarm for their tenants.
- Low-sitting toilets actually serve a purpose – being closer to the ground is a healthier and more natural way to, ya know, do your numbers.
- In the US, sinks always have just one faucet, and you can customize the temperature of the water however you like.
- Most families are totally ok with wearing shoes inside around the house, as long as they’re not muddy or anything. Sure, there are those American families that don’t do it.
- Apparently in Europe, you have a switch to either allow the power to flow by turning a button on or cutting it by switching it off. In America, you don’t have this option.
- Garbage disposals are a lot more common in the States. In fact, over 50% of American homes have one.
- Americans really do love to display the ol’ Star-Spangled Banner, so most homes here have at least one hanging outside the house.
- Americans like to take care of their yard. Plus, most neighborhoods have rules about it!
