Kilauea is the youngest and southeastern most volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii. Topographically Kilauea appears as only a bulge on the southeastern flank of Mauna Loa, and so for many years Kilauea was thought to be a mere satellite of its giant neighbor, not a separate volcano. However, research over the past few decades shows clearly that Kilauea has its own magma-plumbing system, extending to the surface from more than 60 km deep in the earth.

Hawaiian Meaning

The Hawaiian name Kilauea means spewing or much spreading, apparently in reference to the lava flows that it erupts. Eruptions have been Continuous since January 3, 1983. It is estimated that the first eruption of Kilauea has between 300,000 and 600,000 years ago.

Lava entering the Pacific Ocean, from the Kilauea volcano on Hawaii, in Volcanoes National Park. It is the East Lae'apuki entry point of the PKK lava flow. This volcano has been erupting since 1983, and this lava flow has been active since 2004.

Hawaii and other island volcanoesare in a constant competition for the freshest, newest rock around. When the lava meets the sea, it cools quickly while boiling the ocean into steam. This results in a distinctive texture: the quenching produces a glassy outer surface from the lava cooling too quickly for crystal structure to grow. This insulates the inside of the globs, trapping any dissolved gas as bubbles and allowing internal microcrystal growth from the slightly slower cooling rate.

Blue Hawaiian Helicopter Flies Over East Coast North of Hilo after Viewing Kilauea Volcano

After flying over the Fissure 8 eruption of Kilauea Volcano on Hawaii island, my helicopter makes a U-turn so folks on the left side can have a nice view of the ocean entries. It’s now 1:28 p.m. as we turn back toward Hilo along the island’s east coast. What a spectacular flight to come over and see Fissure 8 sprouting out lava and watching the river of lava heading toward the ocean. Helicopters are all over the place. This is definitely a sight to see. Puna District population is about 50,000, so it’s a pretty large displacement if you have 2,000 residents forced out of their homes out of 50,000. That’s a displacement rate of 4%.

Having left the volcanic eruption zone, we’re now en route to view waterfalls along the coast north of Hilo, the second part of our flightseeing tour. We fly over Onomea Bay. Hilo's location on the eastern side of the Hawaii, windward relative to the trade winds, makes it the fourth wettest city in the United States behind 3 places in southeast Alaskan. This side of the island, wherever the lava is not flowing, is lush and green, in contrast to the dry western (Kona) side of the island. There are few beaches on this side, however, as we fly along rocky cliffs at the sea’s edge.

Small waterfalls are seen coming out into the sea. Then we spot a larger one with multiple cascades stepping down to the ocean. It’s hard to imagine in this lush tropical landscape that nearby to the south is a volcanic eruption zone.

Puʻu ʻŌʻō Lava Flow

Kilauea is the most active volcano in the world and along her Southern flanks lava is entering the pacific at a steady rate. To get to this hike follow Crater Rim Drive to Chain of Craters Road until it dead ends at the Pacific Ocean. This flat 8 mile out and back hike starts at the Hōlei Sea Arch and ends at the active Puʻu ʻŌʻō Lava Flow into the pacific ocean. While this hike may be long it is not particularly challenging along a well graded class 1 trail and a must do for everyone. Be warned wear layers and be prepared for rain any time of the year. As you near the lava flow one can smell the sulfur dioxide released by the lava and people with lung issues are advised to take extreme caution and not proceed. If you are feeling adventurous, where the trail ends you may follow the roped off section to the lava cliffs along the Pacific Ocean. Here you will witness red hot lava pour into the Pacific, a memory you will soon never forget.

Peering into Kilauea Volcano - Pu’u ‘O’o Big Island Hawaii

Peering into Kilauea volcano - Pu’u ‘O’o rift via helicopter on the Big Island of Hawaii. This was one of the most thrilling things I’ve ever done! Pu’u ‘O’o is part of Kilauea’s eastern rift zone. Until April 2018 this volcanic cone had been erupting almost non-stop since January 1983. It was the longest ongoing rift-zone eruption on the planet over the past 200 years! The collapse of its magma floor led to some of the 3-month-long lava flow and destruction on Hawaii’s Big Island in 2018. Because it is no longer shooting lava into the air, we were able to peer right into this Kilauea volcanic cone. Amazing! We booked the Circle of Fire and Waterfalls Tour from Hilo with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters through TripAdvisor. Highly recommend this once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Overflow of a perched levee—Halema‘uma‘u, Kīlauea Summit

Lava continues to erupt from the west vent in Halema‘uma‘u, and supply the lava lake through a spillway in the spatter cone. On November 12, a small overflow of the perched lava lake levee was visible from the western crater rim. Overflows are an important process for building up perched levees, as they help add height and stability. The height of the levee in this video was measured at 1 m (3.3 ft).

Kilauea Volcano before it erupted - Big Island 2017 #Kilauea

Kilauea volcano has been erupting continually since 1983, making it one of the most active volcanoes on Earth. As darkness falls, the glow from the Kilauea volcano’s summit eruption is visible in this view from the Jagger Museum observation deck in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park.Lava viewing the flow. Seeing the lava up-close is an experience. A surface lava flow from the Kilauea volcano has been flowing in the East Rift Zone, where lava flows are flowing out of the Puʻu ʻŌʻō vent.
