Xochimilco is one of the most interesting cultural areas to visit when you’re in Mexico City. It was formerly a series of pre-Hispanic villages along Lake Xochimilco. Eventually Mexico City expanded and grew all the way to Xochimilco, and now it’s one of the boroughs of the city.
What’s most remarkable about Xochimilco, and the reason most people go to visit is because of the extensive network of canals that form the framework of the area. Nowadays, you can rent the brightly colored boats and take a ride, eating and drinking along the way. I was there on a weekend evening, and it was a bit more rowdy and loud than I had wanted it to be, but it was still very fun. If you go during the daytime, you might have a more peaceful relaxing journey at Xochimilco.
Here’s what Lalo ( and I did on our short visit:
Mercado de Xochimilco - This is the main market of Xochimilco, and one of the best places to get started eating traditional Mexican food when you visit Xochimilco. At the entrance of the market you’ll find rows of vendors selling home-cooked foods. Don’t miss them, they are incredible delicious. Along with rare types of tlayudas, the highlight for me was the chicken tostada which blew me away.
Here’s the list of everything we ate, but really you can just walk around, see what looks good, and try it:
Tlacoyo - 12 MXN ($0.65) each
Tostada - 15 MXN ($0.81) each
Taco - 5 MXN ($0.27) each
Jamaica - 10 MXN ($0.54)
Carnitas - 20 MXN ($1.08) each
After eating, we walked over to the boat pier. And unfortunately we were running a little late on time and it was a race against time and daylight, but we made it to the pier. Lalo talked to the boat crews, and we finally arranged a boat. The cost was a little higher than what it would normally be for locals, but unfortunately, that’s what it came down to.
Boat hire - 850 MXN ($45.91)
Hope you enjoyed this tour of Xochimilco. The colorful boats are impressive to see, and it’s hard to believe you’re in Mexico City when you’re both at the relaxed Xochimilco Market, and gliding along the canals.

Xochimilco - Fiesta Every Day on the Canals of Mexico City!
The town of Xochimilco, Mexico has been around for many centuries. Even before the Spanish arrived to Mexico. It is on a canal system with artificial islands that are navigated by gondola-like boats called trajineras. It is still much like it was hundreds of years ago with the canals and human-powered boats so it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and welcome for tourists. You will see mostly Mexicans enjoying their time here hanging out with friends but some foreigners as well. It's like having a party on a boat with lots of other boat parties going on around you. Only Mexico can do something like this.

XOCHIMILCO BOAT RIDE - MEXICO CITY | Eileen Aldis
Xochimilco is a UNCESCO World Heritage Site and a special part of Mexico City's pre-Hispanic past. It's a canal system that was used throughout the valley which includes 170 kilometres of canals! Today you can visit and ride on a gondola-like boat called a trajinera which will take you on a ride around. There are also special floating gardens and lots of other boats selling food, souvenirs, and shuttling around mariachi bands who will play for you. We took the public collectivo boat for only twenty pesos whereas a trajinera costs minimum 350 pesos. We thought this was a good hack! If you're planning to visit Xochimilco, make sure to watch this video for a tip about which launch point to go to as well! This was a fun place to spend the morning and I loved seeing all the brightly coloured boats.

FOOD TOUR IN XOCHIMILCO, MEXICO CITY | DIY Xochimilco Food Tour
Today's vlog will cover Xochimilco, Mexico City tour - a small pre-colonial suburb/neighborhood of Mexico City. Xochimilco is a very popular destination day trip from Mexico City, and it is famous for colorful boats in the ancient canal system.
Our main goal was to conduct a DIY Xochimilco Food Tour, and we developed a list of what we were looking for. There is a great selection of authentic Mexican food that we came across - starting off with tamales, tlayudas, tacos (an essential), dorilocos, nopales and even the infamous chapulinas grasshoppers. And we love the flan dessert, as well as the pan de muertos (day of the dead bread) and the agave pulque drink.
More on the Xochimilco Boat ride:
Try to go here on Sunday, where local families gather to enjoy some quality time on the boat. The official rate to rent a private boat is 500 Mexican pesos for an hour - but we opted to hop on a boat colectivo, a shared boat that only charges 30 Mexican pesos for the 1.5 hour travel! A much better option!
To find the Xochimilco colectivo, you will have to go to Pier Salitre, which is north of the Embarcadero Belem. These two locations are within walking distance from the Xochimilco Terminal as well as the main market.
The 1.5 hr colectivo will take you through the busy Xochimilco canals, and drop you off at the Embarcadero Nuevo Nativitas.
Along the way, there will be many people who try to sell you boat rides. If you ask them about the colectivos, they will tell you that it doesn't exist, or it doesn't operate. Don't trust them - they are bound to sell you their more expensive boat ride, obviously!

Xochimilco: The Floating Party in Mexico City | Getting on a Trajinera on the Xochimilco Canals
Xochimilco is at the south end of Mexico City, and its canals are packed with brightly colored boats called trajineras. The boats are available for rent any day of the week, but if you're looking for an entertaining, fiesta-style atmosphere, it's best to go on the weekends. Renting one of these boats for an afternoon is easy. The boats are typically rented for family gatherings or by groups of friends and couples. And it's a high-energy, fun, party atmosphere! There are lots of vendors selling food, drinks, and souvenirs and the live mariachi bands give the place a great vibe. If you want to learn a bit more about area, take a quick stop along the canal at the Ajolotario to learn more about the Ajolotes (a type of salamander) and the history of the canal.

XOCHIMILCO Boat Ride | Mexico City: The Ultimate Workout Experience
It's a beautiful day in Mexico City and we are in Xochimilco taking a boat ride down the canals. Our boat consisted of us three, Anthony, Jonathan, and Goran and two young guides who took us on a 5 hour journey to the Island of Dolls (more on that in a future video). After about the first hour our guides got tired so Goran had to learn how to move the boat and help out. It's not as easy as you'd think. What was crazy cool was having on our Floating garden stacked with 12 homemade varieties of Mezcal. We really brought 2019.

The famous painter Diego Rivera's most prized collections are housed in Xochimilco at the Dolores Olmedo Museum, which we were able to get up close and personal to the rare hairless Mexican dogs, Xoloitzcuintli or XOLO for short. They are also one of the most ancient dog breeds on earth.

What Xochimilco is known for its many canals and the colorful boats ready to take you up and down the canal. It was like a PARTY ON WATER .... FULLY STOCKED with some of the BEST HOMEMADE FOOD and DRINKS.
Let's just say I think our floating garden was probably the best in the canal. CHEERS!! ????????

My Story:
When my big sister, Carrie, was diagnosed with BRCA1 breast cancer we learned she had a specific variant only found in Ashkenazi Jewish people. This was shocking news for my sisters and I who are the children of an Evangelical Pastor. Our father, James, was obsessed with Israel and Jewish culture after studying in Israel for a year in college. My father was adopted and had no idea what his ethnicity was. He would have been thrilled to find out he had Jewish heritage, unfortunately at the time we made this discovery he was already in the advance stages of early onset dementia. I set out to find his biological family and learn how much Jewish Ancestry we actually had. As I dig in to my father’s past, I also reflect upon my conservative evangelical upbringing and why I chose to leave the church.
