The port of Messina lies on the northeastern coast of the island and is renowned for the majestic Duomo di Messina and its Astronomical Clock, the biggest and most complex mechanical and astronomical clock in the world. Messina is also the main gateway to the stunning resort town of Taormina, nestled 52 km/32 miles (a 45-minute drive) to the south.
Messina cruise terminal is located in the heart of the city, within an easy 5-minute walk from Piazza Duomo and Messina Cathedral. In this episode, we spend a day in the historic port city of Messina, Sicily! We try to track down a deep-fried mozzarella sandwich called a Rustici - but will we find it?? We climb to the top of the clock tower which houses the biggest and most complex mechanical and astronomical clock in the world, and hit the city streets to discover what this Sicilian city has to offer!
Messina is known as the door of Sicily and a crucial port and gateway to the Mediterranean sea and Italy. It is the 3rd largest city in Sicily and a cruise port in the province of Messina, Italy. Devastated by major earthquakes as well as bombings in World War 2, Messina is an ancient city with a very modern touch, as most of the buildings and structures have been rebuilt in the last 100 years.

Messina is a port town with a lot of history due to its proximity to the tip of Southern Italy.
The Messina Straits is a busy shipping lane, which means many of the ports along the coast service, repair, and refit ships. It has many churches of the victor of the many religious wars, and a clock tower that performs a concert at noon on Sundays. The museum is religious and a way out, so check the film before you visit.

Messina is a harbour city in northeast Sicily, separated from mainland Italy by the Strait of Messina. It’s known for the Norman Messina Cathedral, with its Gothic portal, 15th-century windows and an astronomical clock on the bell tower. Nearby are marble fountains decorated with mythological figures, like the Fontana di Orione, with its carved inscriptions, and the Neptune Fountain, topped by a statue of the sea god.
Messina is the third largest city on the island of Sicily, and the 13th largest city in Italy, with a population of more than 219,000[7] inhabitants in the city proper and about 650,000 in the Metropolitan City.

A popular cruise port destination, this video offers the day visitor a quick simple guide to what you can see and experience with just a few hours to spare.
The port area is so close to the city that its entirely possible to walk off your ship and go exploring on your own.
This short film locates some of the best sights for you. But the best idea to ensure you have a stress free day navigating your way to them is to grab an actual tourist street map from your guest services or shore excursion people on board, or from one of the street vendors/guides outside at the port exit.
At breakfast, use your high up vantage point looking over the city to get you bearings before you leave the ship.
Leave around 10 in the morning if you want to take your walking at a gentle pace, and be on time for a special daily event in one of the towns squares (you can see a taste of that in this video!)

Messina played a role in World War II, and post-war reconstruction transformed it into a modern city while preserving ancient remnants. Today, it stands as a blend of ancient charm and contemporary life, reflecting its enduring resilience through the ups and downs of time.

Messina excursions from the cruise port by official private taxi or minibus. Celebrity Beyond visit Messina Sicily and in the port area there is an official private taxi chart with set prices to local attractions. The places on offer are, Taormina, Castelmola, Savoca, Vulcano Etna (Mount Etna), Tindari, and other places if requested. You can also visit the village of the Godfather along with other places. These trips are considerably cheaper than the ship excursions and can save you hundreds of pounds or dollars but please be aware you must allow plenty of time to return to the ship as there is no guarantee with any private tour.
