This week:
✔️ Spray foam insulation throughout cabin (including crawl space)
✔️ New windows for sun-room
✔️ DIY Metal roof installation

Here it is friends: the new adventure we've been dreaming and saving for since we first met 8 years ago. We've always envisioned moving into the woods by the lake and building our dream tiny cabin as a home base for us to come back to in between our international travels. We cannot wait to have a place to call our own!! This week we get our biggest snowstorm yet and simultaneously have the cabin spray foamed for some much-needed insulation. We also transform our screened-in porch by adding Lexan sheets over the windows so we can enjoy the room (and more importantly the VIEW) year-round!! And last we become roofers and tackle the very scary job of replacing our roof on the very steep screened-in porch.

How Did We Get Here?
Abandoning our Van in Africa
After an incredible 3 years of living, working, and traveling in our self converted Sprinter Van we made the very tough decision to abandon it in Africa to take a rescue flight back to Canada. As it has for all of us this global pandemic has flipped our world upside down. When our Prime Minister announced that he was sending repatriation flights over to Africa to pick up Canadians who were stuck (due to border closures) we consulted with friends and family closest to us and realized that in this time of crisis we should be back in our home country. Halting our dream of driving around the world was a hard pill to swallow which is why we knew we needed a big project to keep our mind + body busy while social distancing back here in Toronto. Enter building an off-grid tiny house on wheels!! But after nearly 6 months, we realized that our dreams of continuing van life across North America in our new van build were not a current reality with the state of the world. So, we've found ourselves pursuing something we've dreamed of since we first got together 8 years ago... a cabin in the woods ????

KEEPING WARM First Winter Overnight in Off Grid Cabin in The Woods

The temperature dropped to -13 degrees F. overnight while we struggled to keep the cabin above freezing temperatures. We were surprisingly warm in our comfy cozy bed but there wasn't much sleep through the night.

I camp and hike in and around the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. I’m also building and enjoying an off- grid cabin in the woods with my partner Cory and the kiddos Nora and Ethan! This vlog-style video brings you with me. I also guide Boundary Waters Retreats! In the Superior National Forest, in Northern Minnesota. And anywhere else I can venture to! I love sharing the journey with you all.

Is this the end of #vanlife for Eamon & Bec?!

We're Eamon and Bec, a Canadian couple who previously lived and traveled full-time in our self converted Sprinter Van!! When the pandemic hit in 2020 we made the difficult decision to abandon our van in Africa and fly home to Canada. Six weeks ago we flew back to Morocco to rescue our van and last week we left it again to come back for a medical procedure (more on that next episode). This week we're sharing what it's like to live in the Canadian wilderness during winter!

7 Months Pregnant Preparing for Winter in the Woods

We moved out to our cabin in the woods 3 years ago & every time fall comes around we forget just how much work it is to winterize the cabin for the harsh Canadian winter that's ahead. So, we get to work installing windows, putting our docks away, chopping firewood, and trying to sneak in some R&R for 30-week pregnant Bec. Would you live at our cabin in the Canadian winter?

Early Fall RUSH to prepare Off Grid Cabin for Winter

Wood stove surround preparation, beam to support the cabin, skirting around the cabin. These are things we have been working on completing for a while. There is still soffit, facia, tongue and groove, fixing the wood stove legs, and many other little things that we will continue working on to hopefully complete before winter in our off grid cabin in the woods.

Slowly but surely we are looking to turn to off-the-grid solutions for power and waste. We would like to grow as composters and gardeners. For now though, our focus is still on the cabin building process. Thank you for joining us.

I camp and hike in and around the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. I'm also building and enjoying an off- grid cabin in the woods with my partner Cory and the kiddos Nora and Ethan! I love sharing the journey with you!

This week we're sharing a day in the life living in Canada! With the winter season upon us we've always got snow, internet problems, and an endless list of indoor renovations to keep us busy.

Winter Life in a Off Grid log Cabin in the Wilderness, Ice Storm, A Cozy Homemade Meal | Tiny Home

I continue to build my camp in the wilderness in a distant and quiet forest.
There were a lot of mice in my Off Grid log Cabin, their tracks were visible on the table, they ate all my candles and food. I don't like to eat from a table with mice running around, so I made a fold out table so now that I'm not in the hut the mice can't get on my table. Also, the video turned out to be very cozy and relaxing. I made a turkey and vegetable roll. Enjoy watching it. The next episode will be very interesting. Winter life goes on.
I will be glad to each of your comments
See you, friends!

We've escaped to the wilderness & we're building our home at a cabin in the woods ... a phrase that was very fun to say in the beautiful fall weather in Canada BUT how are we coping with these cold, winter days? Here we were thinking that the renovations to our cabin were going to be our biggest challenge with this project. We've quickly learned that keeping warm *AND STAYING SANE* while living in the woods alone will be our biggest hurdle yet!

We've always envisioned moving into the woods by the lake and building our dream tiny cabin as a home base for us to come back to in between our international travels. We cannot wait to have a place to call our own!! This week we share our very Canadian morning routine of taking an ice bath in the lake (inspired by Yes Theory's recent episode with Wim Hof) , then move onto a neglected project of insulating the loft and paneling the ceiling. Then we're off to split wood to keep us warm and try to help keep some of our homeless warm too!

Winter Survival Shelter, Stay Warm Overnight With No Fire

How to build a simple emergency winter survival shelter for use in a solo overnight stay in the field. If you end up getting caught out in bad weather while out in the field and have limited resources this style shelter can be made with no tools, and little skill. Just build it small and use as much material as you have energy to gather, the more you get the warmer you will be.
The Arid Scablands can be a tricky place to be when the weather gets bad. Cold winds, low temperatures and steep cliffs and ledges can become hard to navigate at night. In other areas that have an abundance of resources building a shelter can be pretty simple, and there are many videos of building bamboo huts, stick lean-to's shelters, fern and bark huts. We have to be a little creative out here having almost none of those building materials, even firewood is scarce.

A DAY IN THE LIFE Living Remote at Cabin in the Woods

Thanks to YouTube Movies and Shows for sponsoring a portion of this video. Look around now at ???? We've Escaped to the Wilderness & We're Building our Home at a Cabin in the Woods. Today we take you along for a full DAY IN THE LIFE episode sharing what a typical day looks like for us up here in our remote Canadian cabin.

► SUBSCRIBE for a new video every single Sunday
► The vlog continues on Instagram

Here it is friends: the new adventure we've been dreaming and saving for since we first met 8 years ago. We've always envisioned moving into the woods by the lake and building our dream tiny cabin as a home base for us to come back to in between our international travels. We cannot wait to have a place to call our own!! Now that we've lived remote for over a month we've established some daily routines we wanted to share with you all... but there really is nothing routine about living in a construction site with many different projects on the go ????

Who are we?

We're Eamon and Bec, a Toronto-based couple who live full-time in our self converted Sprinter Van!! SUBSCRIBE for wanderlust travel, behind the scenes of what it's really like to live in a van, and videos all about the yummy vegan food we make + eat! VAN LIFE COUPLE.

Our goal here is to inspire you to chase after your own dreams however big (or small... tiny homes anyone?) they may be! We hope to create a community of like-minded, positive individuals who will grow to love and support one another on their own journeys.
