Dangriga is a proud, festive town, one that does its best to make the most of its vibrant Garifuna heritage. Dangriga is the largest city in southern Belize and Garifuna Settlement Day is celebrated each year on November 19th and marks the arrival of the Garifuna people to the shores of Belize from 1832. This holiday is celebrated throughout Belize, but especially in Dangriga, the spiritual capital of the Garifuna people.The name of Stann Creek Town was changed to Dangriga (Sweet Water) in honor of the Garifuna people.

Lost Reef Resort, Riversdale, Belize
Lost Reef Resort is one of those little hidden gems. We found it by luck one day. We had some extra time and took one of those roads less taken. 5 Cabanas sit nestled under the palm trees on this little bay. It has a pool all the units have AC and there is a bar and restaurant here as well. The owners are really nice people. We felt this would be a great place to hang out for a change and will look into this resort the next time we are down

Chaleanor Hotel in Dangriga Town, Belize
Chad and Eleanor Usher combined their first two names to create the name Chaleanor. They started as a guest house for visiting students, but eventually it transformed into a hotel in 1994 and since expanded to 18 rooms. Chad is a visionary person and is always improving the property in whatever way he can, to give the guests a more comfortable stay. His cooperative spirit of happiness easily radiates to those around him.

Just a very short drive thorugh a bit of Punta Gorda in southern Belize, far less commercially exploited which makes it a much nicer and slower paced little city. There are several good places to eat, our favourite is Asha's Culture Kitchen, when we are in PG we stay at Hickatee Cottages. One of the small companies making a difference is Cotton Tree Chocolate Factory. There is so much more to do and see so come south and explore for yourself.

The name Dangriga comes from a Garifuna word meaning sweet water -- the towns name having been changed from Stann Creek Town in the 1980s. Dangriga is the birthplace of punta rock (a fusion of acoustic Garifuna and electric instruments), and is home to a number of notable Garifuna artists, artisans and festivals, not to mention Belizes only Garifuna museum. With good access to both the central cayes and the Southern and Hummingbird Hwys, Dangriga is also an excellent place from which to launch nautical or jungle excursions.
