Takehara is a small town to the east of Hiroshima close to Tadanoumi and Okunoshima (Rabbit Island) which is often referred to as the Mini Kyoto or Little Kyoto, full of Edo style architecture, history, shrines and temples.

A great opportunity to experience small town Japan and learn more of the history of Japan, even though everything may be closed!

Hiroshima
City in Japan
Hiroshima, a modern city on Japan’s Honshu Island, was largely destroyed by an atomic bomb during World War II. Today, Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park commemorates the 1945 event. In the park are the ruins of Genbaku Dome, one of the few buildings that was left standing near ground zero. Other prominent sites include Shukkei-en, a formal Japanese garden, and Hiroshima Castle, a fortress surrounded by a moat and a park. ― Google

2 days in Hiroshima | Day trip to Miyajima Island, Hiking Mt Misen, Food, and Bars

We had a mere 48 hours in Hiroshima and we fell in love with the city pretty much immediately. The food was delicious, but more importantly, the people were some of the nicest we met on this entire trip. We had front row seats to watching an expert okonomiyaki chef, visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial park and museum, ate Hiroshima style tsukemen, drank locally-made sake and more. We even took a day trip to Miyajima island, hiked the gorgeous Mt. Misen, and ate some more. I really can't recommend this city enough and will be coming back here again someday soon.

Exploring Hiroshima & Miyajima

JAPAN AGAIN! This time we travel to Hiroshima & Miyajima Island to explore a beautiful a part of Japan that is full of history. Hiroshima has an unfortunate history but one that comes with a big lesson for the rest of the world, so for sure we had to visit the Peace Memorial Park and A Bomb Dome Site. It's a peaceful place but can't help the surreal feeling of being in the area. The weather wasn't so good to us so when we got to Miyajima Island it became completely blanketed with fog, rain and wind. We were hoping for an amazing view of Japan from the top of Mt Misen but there was nothing but still awesome to see the Itsukushima Shrine and tori gate. Hiroshima Castle to end the trip but we didn't leave without trying the amazing Hiroshima foods: Okonomiyaki at Okonomimura, Bakudanya Tsukemen, Miyajima cakes and oysters and more. More to come from this Japan Trip.

MIYAJIMA JAPAN: A guide to Itsukushima and Hiroshima

A guide to Miyajima Island (actually named Itsukushima) and the city of Hiroshima. We visited Peace Memorial Park, which was a sobering and powerful experience. Miyajima Island might be my favorite place in all of Japan. The roaming deer, the nature, the scenery, the street food - all incredible. And the floating torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine is amazing. The Miyajima ropeway up Mount Misen leads to some of the most beautiful views you'll ever see.

What editing software do you use?
- Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2019

Why don’t you post videos more often?
- I’m still in high school and am involved in a lot of extracurricular activities, and it takes many hours to create each video. I’d rather create quality videos than pump out rushed, crappy ones.

- Yes.

Are you part Japanese?
- Yes, quarter. My grandfather is originally from Yamagata, Japan.

How do you afford to travel to Japan?
- The Old Man travels for his job enough that he has lots of award points to redeem. Plus, traveling to Japan, while not cheap, is not as expensive as most people think.

Why doesn’t the Old Man ever appear in your videos?
- He’s shy. He made a brief appearance in the Takayama video.

Hiroshima was hit by an atomic bomb in August 1945. Today, you can visit the Atomic Bomb Dome, Peace Park and Museum to learn more about this horrendous event which affected thousands of people.

Another way of learning more and discovering information not available in museums is to speak to Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Survivors, another fascinating addition to your list of Things to Do in Hiroshima.

Visit Social Book Cafe in Hiroshima on the 6th of each month to speak to survivors of the Atomic Bomb. In this video, I talk about the story of Takaaki Morikawa, who was just 6 years old at the time of the Hiroshima bomb. He provided fascinating and intreresting information relating to his experience during and after the atomic bomb.

Please note that I chose not to film the actual meeting for this video as I didn't feel comfortable; ie I didn't feel it would be respectful. Why not visit Social Book Cafe in Hiroshima to hear Takaaki's amazing and unimaginable story for yourselves!

Are you planning a Japan trip in 2018? Or looking for Things to Do in Hiroshima? Perhaps looking for ideas for a Hiroshima Day Trip? Then why not head to Okunoshima, or Rabbit Island... yes, an island full of rabbits!

Okunoshima or Rabbit Island is located to the east of Hiroshima. You can either head here on the train or catch the bus from Hiroshima Station to Tadanoumi followed by a short ferry trip. Once there you will discover why Okunoshima needs to be on your list of Hiroshima places to visit!

Rabbit Island also has a wealth of history dating back to before World War 2, as a site used to manufacture poisonous gas for use in chemical warfare. Walk up to the viewpoint or check out some of the ruins including the old power plant.

Have a great trip!

HIROSHIMA AND AMAZING MIYAJIMA ISLAND DAY TRIP! | Backpacking Japan Vlog 2

Hiroshima is the City that the US dropped an Atomic Bomb on during WW2 in 1945 so it is a popular stop on a trip around Japan. After taking the Shinkansen / Bullet Train from Osaka to Hiroshima, I spent the afternoon in Hiroshima visiting the Peace Memorial Park and Museum. Although it was very sad it was also very interesting and the Peace Park is a lovely area to walk around.

The following day I went on the popular day trip from Hiroshima to Miyajima Island and I had such a great day. I have a JR Pass so the train from Hiroshima down to the coast to Miyajima Station is included and there's a JR boat over to the island included in the pass meaning I didn't have to spend any money on transport.

Miyajima Island is most famous for the Great Torii Gate that sits in the water and looks like it's floating when it's high tide. It also has deer roaming the streets which are lovely to see. I wandered around and headed to some temples and generally really enjoyed Miyajima as a Japan Day Trip!

Hiroshima and Miyajima Travel Guide

Things to do in Hiroshima
Hiroshima is an amazing city that will surprise you with all that it has to offer. It pretty much has everything from culture to delicious food, history and amazing views. In this video I’ll give you 8 things to do while there.VIDEO INTROHiroshima brought out the extremes that humanity is capable of. It’s a city that experienced the greatest destructive force that man has built and decades later it shows the resilience and creative force of humanity. In 1945 the A-Bomb leveled the city and today you wouldn’t be able to tell. The city is filled with sky scrappers and culture. Hiroshima is also often glossed over by tourists. Here’s 8 reasons why you should check it out. Despite the history Hiroshima is an awesome place to visit. I recommend you come for at least 2 days. Here are 8 things that you definitely shouldn’t miss.
1. Visit the Peace Memorial Park and Museum. This museum is dedicated to the historical events that saw 2 nuclear bombs dropped on Japan which ended WW2. The first nuclear weapon ever used during a war was dropped on Hiroshima. Explore the surrounding areas and make sure to take the time out to visit the hypocenter and a-bomb dome which was one of the few structures that were left standing.
2. Eat the oystersI didn’t know this but apparently the oysters of Hiroshima are the best in the world. They were definitely amazing so make sure you have some while you’re here. I’ll leave a link to places I ate at in the description.
3. Have some okonomiyaki Okonomiyaki is a staple of Hiroshima and it would be disrespectful to leave here without trying this dish. Its like a pancake made out of a bunch of layers of egg, noodles, pork, veggies and cheese. Come hungry because these things are filling! These spots are everywhere but I recommend getting it from Nagata-Ya. There usually a long line but its definitely worth it. Try to get a spot at the bar to see how these things come together.
4. Visit Miyajima(Video Insert) Miyajima is an island and its filled with tons of stuff to do. definitely spend a day here admiring the nature and vibes. You can get there by taking a ferry from X station.
5. Hang with the deerThese deer are everywhere and they aren’t shy!!! Be careful with your food too. They don’t give a damn and will rob you! Be careful petting them but for the most part they welcome some human interaction. I personally wouldn’t feed them because I wouldn’t want to get them sick.
6. Visit the Shishiiwa observatoryTake a cable car to the Shishiiwa observatory. (Video insert) You also get great views of Hiroshima This is a great place for pictures.
7. Do a tea ceremony.I didn’t want to do this because tea isn’t my thing but Alicia insisted. They make you dress up in kimonos and that felt weird to me. Here you’ll learn about the preparation and presentation of matcha (Video insert).
8. Take in Itsukushima Shrine. This Torii is beautiful and unique as you can walk and boat past it on the same day. When the tide is out you can get close and appreciate its beauty and when its in you can see the majesty of it floating. (Video Insert)
Well that’s it those are my 8 things to do in Hiroshima as always these so much to do but thats all I had time for. If I left some out that you think is cool, please leave it in the comment section. Hit that like and subscribe button, I’ll catch you next time.
