Living the Extreme Medicine Life with Johannes Svensoy | World Extreme Medicine Podcast

From the Thai-Burmese border conducting important work on men’s health to the most isolated oil rigs to COVID-19 response to biosensor technology development for prehospital care, Dr Johannes Svensoy has hit nearly square on the extreme medicine Bingo card! In this episode, he and Dr Shawna Pandya discuss his experiences in tropical, disaster, aerospace medicine and more, lessons learned from the world of extreme sports...and the next stop on his extreme medicine journey.

Austere environments abound - and getting involved is part acknowledging enthusiasm early on, part keeping an eye out for opportunity...and part going for it!

Whether talking about tropical medicine, maritime medicine, disaster medicine, or even COVID-19 response, some lessons are universal. Anticipate medical issues early on. Prepare and prevent when possible. Practice closed-loop communication in crisis situations and build team dynamics from the outset.

Skills from other equally operational environments, whether mountaineering, skydiving or diving offer some equally key lessons. Know your equipment. Test it. Be aware that your environment can change on a dime.

Dr Svensøy (Johannes Nordsteien) is a Norwegian physician with a specialization in Disaster medicine (EMDM) and training in Tropical medicine, along with Pre-Hospital, Maritime, Offshore and Aviation Medicine. He is currently working on a doctorate at the Norwegian National Advisory Unit on Prehospital Emergency Medicine (NAKOS), researching biosensor technology, especially for monitoring hemodynamically unstable patients in the prehospital setting. During the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, he has been involved with the medical response at Oslo University Hospital Infectious disease department. Humanitarian, adventure, expedition and extreme medicine have been his main interest fields for many years, being a rescue diver, skydiver, active mountaineer and member of the Explorers Club.

Fifteen Pictures from India : Abhimanyu at TEDxNMIMSBangalore

Abhimanyu has studied Economics at Sri Ram College of Commerce, New Delhi and completed his business administration degree at Indian Institute of Management Calcutta. The travel bug bit him the day he bought a rusty old Royal Enfield in Mumbai 6 years ago. Over the next few years he criss-crossed country roads across India -- sometimes riding with the wind but mostly slow enough to interact and learn from the people that crossed his path. In 2008, he undertook a three month long solo journey across India bringing him face to face with a country that remains hidden away from the limelight. Eventually, the travel experiences become powerful enough for him to throw away his cushy investment banking job and explore the social development world. He spent a few months in the villages of Arunachal Pradesh promoting economic empowerment of far flung areas and continued it with entrepreneurship development in the very backward Bundelkhand region of central India. Now, Abhimanyu wears many hats including managing a unique travel experiences company andconsulting with non-profits on their strategy, fund raising, research and communication needs.

Six months later, we are still talking about our time on the Camino and its impact on us. 48: Samjhana Moon, How to Let Your Soul Shine Through in Your Photographs

Today’s Guest
I originally met today's guest at my spiritual coaching course in 2011, with Jayne Morris. Samjhana did the photographs on the day that we made our vision boards, and she gave us each a portrait photo we could use for our business. Ever since then, I've wanted to have new portraits done with her.

This year, I finally did a studio session with Samjhana, and I've had such amazing feedback on my new photos. I love them so much! I really feel like she captured my soul in them, and I wanted to get her on the podcast to share her expert tips.

Samjhana Moon is a photographic artist. She is also a visionary. Samjhana has taken her innate ability to capture the essence of people and places using the medium of photography, into another dimension. Through her business, Goddess Portraiture, she is redefining our cultural ideas of beauty and femininity by revealing the beauty inside every woman, irrespective of age, size or culture.

Her portrait gallery reveals not only her ability to make people feel at ease in front of the camera but also the rare gift of placing her subjects in natural settings that allows them to connect to their true and elemental selves. Samjhana starts from the premise that “this person is beautiful” and regards it as her work, as an artist, to capture this.

Revealing this inner beauty can be transformational for the person involved. Unsurprisingly, Samjhana is the photographer of choice for many heart-focused entrepreneurs seeking a creative way to promote themselves in business.

Samjhana is also an intrepid traveller and free spirit. Her stunning landscape photography, featuring some of the most beautiful places on earth, is available as fine art prints. After studying photography at college, Samjhana has spent her whole life behind the lens of a camera, giving her technical capabilities to match her artistic skill.

What You’ll Learn

How solo travel taught her to tap into her intuition
Samjhana's top tips for getting amazing photographs taken
The three powerful questions she asked herself when she was trying to find her Thing
The important questions you need to ask a photographer you're interested in hiring
Why preparation is so important when getting portraits done
Why everyone is photogenic...yes, even you! :)

Housing in later life: improving choice by building a better offer

Drawing on latest research and policy, and the call in last week’s Adult Social Care White Paper to incentivise a better range of housing options, this session will explore examples of innovative practice to create aspirational places to attract people to ‘rightsize’ thereby improving their housing choices in later life.

Essential Oil Diffuser Necklace

Fast food is a type of mass-produced food designed for commercial resale and with a strong priority placed on speed of service versus other relevant factors involved in culinary science. Fast food was originally created as a commercial strategy to accommodate the larger numbers of busy commuters, travelers and wage workers who often did not have the time to sit down at a public house or diner and wait for their meal. By making speed of service the priority, this ensured that customers with strictly limited time (a commuter stopping to procure dinner to bring home to their family, for example, or an hourly laborer on a short lunch break) were not inconvenienced by waiting for their food to be cooked on-the-spot (as is expected from a traditional sit down restaurant). For those with no time to spare, fast food became a multibillion-dollar industry.

Describing food is not as easy as it would seem. How many ways can you say something was really tasty? You can compare a dish to a picture, a sports game, a musical performance or give it personality. Describe its sunny or somber mood, shyness, assertiveness, or contradiction of flavors. Knowing the words for describing tastes and flavors will help you to find the right adjective in other areas.
