48 Hours in Gdansk, Poland // Most Colorful Town in Poland

Tucked away on the northern coast of Poland, along the Baltic Sea is the colorful port city of Gdansk. This city felt like a fairytale. Colorful row homes and cobblestone streets. All centered around massive 15th century cathedral that offers amazing 360 degree views of the city. The city offers picturesque canal ways with huge pirate ships and holds historical significance being the site of the first shots of WWII and along with being an important source of the amber trade. I had so much fun wandering aimlessly through this photographers paradise. This was one of my favorite stops on my Poland trip and here’s how it went…

Gdańsk (Danzig in German) is a port city on the Baltic coast of Poland. At the center of its Main Town, reconstructed after WWII, are the colorful facades of Long Market, now home to shops and restaurants. Nearby is Neptune Fountain, a 17th-century symbol of the city topped by a bronze statue of the sea god. Gdańsk is also a center for the world’s amber trade; boutiques throughout the city sell the ossified resin. ― Google

Exploring the amazing city of Gdańsk in 8 hours?

City of Gdańsk in Poland is a place I have wanted to visit in a long time so when I had a short stay over I decided to take the time to explore the city and see as much of Gdansk as possible. Gdansk is the largest port in Poland and Poland's fourth-largest city.

Having flown into Gdansk the night before from Aberdeen on WizzAir I decided to explore the city and visit some sites that I have wanted to see for a long time such as Museum of the Second World War (WW2), St. Mary's Church, The National Museum and the Gdansk water front.

Come with me and explore the beauty of Gdańsk, Poland on my vlog of the city. You can treat this video as a bit of a travel guide for Gdansk, as I show you round all the main attractions in the city.

I was so pleasantly surprised by the city, especially Gdansk Old Town. I’ll take you down the Main Street, Długa Street, and show you all of Gdańsk’s beautiful landmarks, the colourful and eccentric streets.

While exploring, I’ll also tell you a little bit about the history of Gdańsk, and why they have such beautiful, and Dutch looking architecture!

I also visited Malbork Castle, the world’s largest castle by land area, which started being built in the 13th Century by the Teutonic Order. I have a separate video coming out soon for Malbork Castle, so make sure you stick around for that in a few days!

Back to Gdańsk, I also got some stunning 4K drone footage of the city which I absolutely love.

Amazing Things to Do in Gdańsk, Gdynia & Sopot & Top Gdańsk, Gdynia & Sopot Attractions

Discover with us the most amazing things to do in Gdańsk, Gdynia & Sopot & Top Gdańsk, Gdynia & Sopot attractions. Tricity Poland consists of three cities that are very close to each other but at the same time they are very different in character and history - Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot. The cities are located on the shores of the Baltic Sea and are not more than 40 minutes apart.
Let’s start with Gdynia, one of the youngest cities in Poland which was granted city rights only in 1926 and quickly became one of the most important port cities in Poland. Be sure to visit white sandy Gdynia Beach with clean waters. It is a great place for swimming and sunbathing in summer and is accompanied by the restaurants and cafes.
The most romantic walking spot in Gdynia with sensational sea view is 180 m long Orlowo Pier. It was opened during WWI and is equipped with benches.
A perfect place for the families with children is the Aquarium. Its 68 tanks are home to around 250 species of fish, reptiles, or invertebrates. Another must-visit attractions are two impressive vessels: The ORP Błyskawica, the destroyer constructed in 1937 which also took part in the evacuation from Dunkirk and Dar Pomorza - a fully rigged sailing ship built in 1909 which used to serve as a training ship. Both vessels have been converted into museum ships.
Move to romantic Sopot with endless sandy beaches stretching 4,5 kilometer and impressive architecture. Whether you are walking along the 511-meter-long pier, which is the longest wooden pier in Europe, or wandering along the main promenade with many restaurants, cafes and shops called Monciak, you will fall in love with this city. Visit the popular Crooked House which is the example of bold contemporary architecture and one of the symbols of the city completed in 2004. This 30 m tall structure was built in 1975 as a part of the Hospital and became the Lighthouse 2 years later in 1977. Since then, it has lost its official lighthouse status and today it is open to visitors.
End your journey in medieval port city Gdańsk with a tradition spanning over 1,000 years.
An unmissable icon of the city is extraordinary 15th century wooden crane situated over the Moltawa river. It used to be largest port crane in the whole of Europe during the Middle Ages and today it is a part of the Polish Maritime Museum.
Be sure to visit the Royal Way lined all along with quaint historic town houses. You will find here the 14th century Main Town Hall with 83-meter-high clock tower which offers unbelievable views of the city during summer months, or the Neptune`s fountain which is a mannerist-rococo masterpiece built in the early 17th century. It is a symbol of city’s connection with the sea and has become the favorite spot for tourists to pose for a souvenir photo from Gdańsk.

Gdansk First Walk Through and Around the City. AMAZING WOW!!! - Gdansk Poland - ECTV

Gdańsk (/ɡəˈdænsk/ gə-DANSK, also US: /ɡəˈdɑːnsk/ gə-DAHNSK;[2] Polish: [ɡdaɲsk] (About this soundlisten); German: Danzig [ˈdantsɪç] (About this soundlisten); Kashubian: Gduńsk;[3] Latin: Gedanum, Dantiscum)[4] is a city on the Baltic coast of northern Poland. With a population of 470,805,[1] Gdańsk is the capital and largest city of the Pomeranian Voivodeship and the most prominent city in the geographical region of Pomerania. It is Poland's principal seaport and the country's fourth-largest metropolitan area.[5]

The city is situated at the southern edge of Gdańsk Bay, in a conurbation with the city of Gdynia, the resort town of Sopot, and suburban communities; these form a metropolitan area called the Tricity (Trójmiasto), with a population of approximately 1.5 million.[6] Gdańsk lies at the mouth of the Motława River, connected to the Leniwka, a branch in the delta of the Vistula River, which drains 60 percent of Poland and connects Gdańsk with the Polish capital, Warsaw.

The city's history is complex, with periods of Polish, Prussian and German rule, and periods of autonomy as a free city-state. An important shipbuilding port and trade point since the Middle Ages, in 1361 it became a member of the Hanseatic League which defined its economic, demographic and urban landscape for several centuries. From 1918 to 1939, Gdańsk lay in the disputed Polish Corridor between Poland and Germany; its ambiguous political status created tensions that culminated in the Invasion of Poland and the first clash of the Second World War at nearby Westerplatte. The contemporary city was shaped by extensive border changes, expulsions and new settlement in or after 1945. In the 1980s, Gdańsk was the birthplace of the Solidarity movement, which played a major role in bringing an end to Communism in Poland and helped precipitate the collapse of the Eastern Bloc, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact.

Gdańsk is home to the University of Gdańsk, Gdańsk University of Technology, the National Museum, the Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre, the Museum of the Second World War, the Polish Baltic Philharmonic and the European Solidarity Centre. The city also hosts St. Dominic's Fair, which dates back to 1260,[7] and is regarded as one of the biggest trade and cultural events in Europe.[8] Gdańsk has also topped rankings for the quality of life, safety and living standards worldwide, and its historic city center has been listed as one of Poland's national monuments.

There are countless theories as to the origin of the city's name, with some being the subject of speculation. It is likely that the name was derived from Gdania, a river presently known as Motława on which the city is situated.[13]

Linguists argue that the name stems from the Proto-Slavic adjective/prefix gъd-, which meant wet or moisty with the addition of the morpheme ń/ni and the suffix -sk.[14] Conrad Celtes and Johann Uphagen believed that the appellation was given to the settlement by the Germanic Goths.[15] Other scholars from the 19th century claimed that the name originated from the expression ku Dansk, which meant to/towards Denmark.[16]

History
The name of a settlement was recorded after St. Adalbert's death in AD 997 as urbs Gyddanyzc[17] and it was later written as Kdanzk in 1148, Gdanzc in 1188, Danceke[18] in 1228, Gdańsk in 1236,[19] Danzc in 1263, Danczk in 1311,[20] Danczik in 1399,[17][21] Danczig in 1414, Gdąnsk in 1656. In Polish the modern name of the city is pronounced [ɡdaj̃sk] (About this soundlisten). In English (where the diacritic over the n is frequently omitted) the usual pronunciation is /ɡəˈdænsk/ or /ɡəˈdɑːnsk/. The German name, Danzig, is pronounced [ˈdantsɪç] (About this soundlisten).

The city's Latin name may be given as either Gedania, Gedanum or Dantiscum; the variety of Latin names reflects the mixed influence of the city's Polish, German and Kashubian heritage. Other former spellings of the name include Dantzig, Dantsic and Dantzic.

Ceremonial names
On special occasions the city is also referred to as The Royal Polish City of Gdańsk (Polish: Królewskie Polskie Miasto Gdańsk, Latin: Regia Civitas Polonica Gedanensis, Kashubian: Królewsczi Polsczi Gard Gduńsk).[22][23][24] In the Kashubian language the city is called Gduńsk. Although some Kashubians may also use the name Our Capital City Gduńsk (Nasz Stoleczny Gard Gduńsk) or The Kashubian Capital City Gduńsk (Stoleczny Kaszëbsczi Gard Gduńsk), the cultural and historical connections between the city and the region of Kashubia are debatable and use of such names rises controversy among Kashubians.
