EXTREMELY CHEWY NOODLES! Indonesian BRUNCH Street Food Tour in Jakarta Indonesia

I love brunch, especially trying out all the different types of brunch in other countries. This is my first time having brunch in Jakarta Indonesia, and I must say, they sure know how to do their brunch here! The noodle dishes that I ordered for brunch are just incredible, the texture of the noodles are extremely chewy and stretchy, especially mixed with the pieces of the crispy pork!
All the noodle dishes that I have tried in this video are all extremely chewy, and stretchy, I really can't decide which noodle dish is my favorite!
I'm also really glad that I got to try out the different types of the Indonesian Brunch, from the flavored porky soup to ribs that fall off the bones and let's not forget the fresh seafood.
Overall, I must say all the tasty brunch that I have visited in Jakarta are just simply fantastic!

We start the day with serabi- a sweet treat made from rice flour and coconut milk. At Mrs Lidya’s Serabi Notosuman dozens of small pans are set up in which to make this popular snack. Serabi are sold in packs of ten and you can opt for the original or chocolate variety. The chocolate come sprinkled with chocolate sprinkles which melt into the gooey coconut centre. Delicate and crispy on the outer edges and warm, thick and gluggy on the inside- serabi are a must eat if you have a sweet tooth!

Our next stop is for one of Indonesia’s most popular meals or snacks- bakso! Bakso or meatballs are usually served in a soup together with noodles, some vegetables and fried shallots. The beef meatballs are springy and slightly chewy and its said that bakso Solo has bigger meatballs than ones you might find elsewhere.

We then head to a quirky restaurant which offers selat Solo a dish unique to Solo and made up of beef steak and vegetables in a sweet gravy. It’s a classic fusion dish with Javanese and European influences.

In the evening vendors who sell sate, fried noodles and fried rice start plying their trade. We eat smoky chicken sate at Sate Ayam Pak Banjir Kampung Baru where a simple grill is set up right on the footpath and swathes of smoke stream onto the road. We follow the sate up with Javanese fried noodles and fried rice from President Jokowi’s favourite stall- simple, honest food cooked well!

Where we ate:

Serabi at Mrs Lidya’s Serabi Notosuman, Jalan Muhammad Yamin No.28, Jayengan, Serengan, Jayengan, Serengan, Kota Surakarta, Jawa Tengah 57152. Open daily 4:30am to 5:00pm.

Bakso (meatballs) at Alex’s Meatball Mangkunegaran, Jl. Yosodipuro No.12B, Ketelan, Banjarsari, Kota Surakarta, Jawa Tengah 57131. Open daily 9:00am to 8:00pm.

Selat solo at Warung Selat Mbak Lies, Jalan Veteran, Gang II No. 42, Serengan, Kota Surakarta, Jawa Tengah 57144. Open daily 8:00am to 6:00pm.

Jakarta Street Food - FAMOUS KETOPRAK at Ketoprak Ciragil in Jakarta, Indonesia!

►Check out 50 of the Best Indonesian Dishes:

Ketoprak is one of the most famous Indonesian street food dishes in Jakarta, and it’s available throughout the city, often from street food carts. In this video, I went to one of the most famous restaurants in all of Jakarta, known as Ketoprak Ciragil, for a taste of their legendary ketoprak.

I arrived quite early, way before any meal rush, and the semi-indoor restaurant was already packed with customers, especially people grabbing takeaway ketoprak to deliver to customers. After navigating my way in, I saw them adding fried tofu, noodles, and a mix of other ingredients, and then mixing in their special peanut sauce, and finally finishing the ketoprak with a fried egg all on top, and a handful of crackers.

The ketoprak was a little sweet, but it was still remarkably delicious. It was such a simple mixture of ingredients, but they all went so well together. What really made the ketoprak at Ketoprak Ciragil for me was the fried egg on top, mixed with the peanut sauce. Along with one of the best versions of ketoprak in Jakarta, the restaurant is also just a pretty cool place to go and hang out for a light meal or snack.

Ketoprak Ciragil
Address: Jl. Ciragil II Blok Q No. 24, Kebayoran Baru, Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta, Indonesia
Open hours: 9 am - 6 pm daily
Price - 20,000 IDR ($1.49) per plate

We start the day with Soto Betawi- soto is an Indonesian soup and we head to local favourite Soto Roxy to sample their version. We order the soto campur which is filled with a mix of different cuts of meat (beef)- it’s spicy, slightly creamy from the addition of coconut milk and given a bit of texture from the addition of emping- belinjo nuts.

Next up we head to South Jakarta for one of Indonesia’s most famous dishes- gado gado. Gado gado is a boiled vegetable salad covered in a creamy peanut sauce which includes a touch of tamarind. This small street stall which is located outside some grand residences in South Jakarta serves up an amazing version.

We then head to Fatahilla Square to track down the street snack of kerak telur- a type of omelette that is cooked with sticky rice. Unfortunately we see our kerak telur take off down the street never to return after the police ask the street vendors to move on. Better luck next time!

We end with nasi uduk- a dish of coconut rice served with a number of different sides together with a peanut sambal. Creamy rice accompanied by fried chicken, stir fried kankung and beef. Delicious!

Where and what we ate:

Soto Betawi at Soto Roxy, Jalan Tidore No.2, RT. 01/ RW. 05, Cideng, Gambir, RT.1/RW.5, Cideng, Gambir, Kota Jakarta Pusat, Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta 10150, Indonesia. Open 6:00am to 2:00pm. Closed Sunday.

Gado Gado at Gado Gado Kertanegara, Jl. Kertanegara No.2, RT.3/RW.2, Selong, Kby. Baru, Kota Jakarta Selatan, Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta 12110, Indonesia. Open 10:00am to 3:00pm. Closed Sunday.

And we TRIED to eat Kerak Telur from the street food stands at Fatahilla Square...

Nasi Uduk at Nasi Uduk Kota Intan, Jl. Kyai Haji Samanhudi, Gambir, RT.1/RW.8, Ps. Baru, Sawah Besar, Kota Jakarta Pusat, Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta 10120, Indonesia. Open daily 5:00pm to 2:00am.

We start the day with mie balap or “racing noodles’, so named because people pick up a plate on their way to work whilst they’re in a rush so they need to be cooked super fast. Made up of wok fried flat rice noodles, egg and sprouts the dish looks like a gluggy mess but the proof is in the taste- it bursts with flavour and retains a smokiness from the wok.

Our next stop is for a popular drink in Medan- an avocado shake- smashed avocado, chocolate syrup and evaporated milk combines to make a thick, creamy sweet confection.

We then head for a feast of tribal food- BPK or Babi Panggang Karo- a dish of the Karo people made up of grilled pork, blood sausage, fried pork accompanied by a blood sauce and spicy sambal. Unique and startlingly spicy- this is one meal you have to eat in Medan.

Medan has a growing coffee culture and we sample the local coffee at our final stop- a cafe called 38 Coffee Lab owned by Jaya Pranata- runner up in the 2017 Aeropress championships.

Where we ate:

Mie balap “Racing Noodles” at Mie Balap Krakatau, Jl. Gunung Krakatau, Glugur Darat I, Medan Tim., Kota Medan, Sumatera Utara 20236. Open daily 7:00am to 11:30am.

Avocado shake at Pockat Kocok Simpang Glugur Bukiya, Jl. KL Yos Sudarso No.21 K, Glugur Kota, Medan Bar., Kota Medan, Sumatera Utara 20115. Open daily 11:00am to 10:00pm.

Babi Panggang Karo (BPK) at BPK Ola Kisat, Jl. Jamin Ginting No.839, Beringin, Medan Selayang, Kota Medan, Sumatera Utara 20157. Open daily 10:00am to 9:00pm.

Coffee at 38 Coffee Lab, Jalan Dagan No.2h, Sekip, Medan Petisah, Sekip, Medan Petisah, Kota Medan, Sumatera Utara 20113. Open 10:00am to 10:00pm Monday to Saturday, 2:00pm to 9:00pm Sunday.

Jakarta Street Food - Local Indonesian Gado-Gado!

One of the most popular Jakarta street food dishes is gado-gado. For my full Jakarta travel and food guide, check this out:

Gado gado is an Indonesian dish that you’ll find on nearly every street corner throughout Jakarta - it’s one of the most common street food dishes in the city. For this video, I happen to be near Citywalk Mall, just south of downtown, and right along Jalan Karet Pasar Baru Timur 5, there’s a nice row of street food stalls that set up during lunchtime hours. There’s a lot of good food to eat, but I decided to go straight for a plate of gado-gado.

After taking a seat on a plastic stool, I ordered a plate and he got busy making it. He first made the peanut sauce, peanut sauce is one of the most important components of gado gado. He added some peanut paste, some sugar, and water, and then ground up some chili and garlic to add to it. Once the consistency was right, he added in handfuls of pre cooked vegetables and rice cakes, and mixed it all up into a salad. Gado gado is technically a salad, but it’s definitely not a light and fluffy salad, but it’s a dense and hearty salad, with plenty of carbs and starches, and made rich with the peanut sauce.

What I love about gado-gado is the mix of ingredients all wrapped up in the thick and nutty peanut sauce. While the sauce can be a bit too sweet sometimes, the this version wasn’t too sweet, but nicely balanced with chilies and garlic, and a good mixture of vegetables. Gado-gado is one of the most popular Jakarta street food dishes, and highly enjoyed this plate in downtown Jakarta.

INDONESIAN STREET FOOD in MEDAN, Indonesia | Mind blowing LOCAL Indonesian food | Medan street food

We start our day with curry noodles at the institution that is Tabona. We eat the kari bihun or curry vermicelli noodle soup with a mix of both chicken and beef. The coconut based curry soup is rich and spicy, the meat flavoursome and the pickled shallots on the side add a vinegary twang cutting through the richness of the soup. This is a must eat in Medan!

Next up we eat rujak, a popular snack in Indonesia. A fruit salad coated in a thick sweet and spicy sauce made from pounding shrimp paste, young banana, chillies and palm sugar the resulting dish is full of texture and contrasting flavours.

Next on the list is ikan bakar or grilled seafood. We head to a popular local spot to eat gurame a freshwater fish smothered in a spice paste, mackerel, rice and urap a coconut and vegetable salad. The fish is grilled over charcoal right on the road and the eatery is simple but filled with people enjoying a seafood lunch. The gurame is perfectly cooked- the flesh tender and sweet. Perfection!

We finish our day of food hunting at one of the oldest restaurants in Indonesia- Tip Top. A bakery/cafe/restaurant/ice cream parlour, Tip Top has been around since 1934. The eatery is nostalgic and kitschy as is the menu. We eat their famous ice cream sandwich the Moorkop and the Pukler- a slice of Neapolitan ice cream. We’re suckers for restaurants with a bit of history. A great ending to a brilliant day of eating in Medan, Indonesia!

Where we ate:

Kari bihun at Tabona, Jalan Mangkubumi No.17, A U R, Medan Maimun, Kota Medan. Open daily 6:30am to 4:30pm

Rujak at Rujak Padang Takana Juo, Jl. Mahkamah, Mesjid, Medan Kota, Kota Medan. Open daily from 11:30am.

Ikan bakar at Ikan Bakar Halimah, Petisah Tengah, Medan Petisah, Kota Medan. Open daily 8:00am to 6:00pm

Ice cream at Tip Top, Jl. Jend. Ahmad Yani No. 92 A-B, Kesawan, West Medan, Kesawan, Medan Bar., Kota Medan. Open daily 8:00am to 10:30pm

Bakso Akiaw 99 - Beef Meatballs and Noodles | Indonesian Food in Jakarta, Indonesia

One of the most famous restaurants in Jakarta to eat Chinese style bakso (meatballs) is Bakso Akiaw 99, located in Mangga Besar, Jakarta.

Across Asia, from Taiwan to Thailand, I’m a big fan of beef noodles. And also, so long as the beef meatballs are all one hundred percent beef, I also really enjoy Chinese style meatballs. One of the most legendary restaurants to eat the Chinese style of bakso in Jakarta is a restaurant called Bakso Akiaw 99, originally from Medan, Sumatra. From the moment the restaurant opens in the afternoon, it remains busy throughout the evening and night.

They have a nice picture menu, and you can choose to order a variety of different beef soup dishes included beef meatballs, mixed organs, and slices of beef. Ying and I ordered a mix of dishes, and to accompany the beef soups I also had a bowl of mie, yellow thick noodles. The noodles were wonderfully chewy and garlicky. The beef was salty and flavorful, and the meatballs had a nice bouncy texture to them.

Bakso Akiaw 99, located in the Manga Besar area of Jakarta (an area that has a strong Chinese and Medan influence), is a must visit restaurant when you’re in Jakarta for bakso.

Bakso Akiaw 99
Address: Jalan Mangga Besar Raya No. 2B, Kec. Tamansari, Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta, Indonesia
Open hours: 3 pm - 11:30 pm daily

INDONESIA Jakarta Bakmi Food Tour | INCREDIBLE LANGHAM Jakarta Hotel | Bubur Ayam Street Food

We are in Jakarta Indonesia and let's do a Noodle Tour! We'll show you what to do in Jakarta, where to stay in Jakarta and a hidden gem in Senopati - Bubur Ayam Senopati (Chicken Porridge).

Bakmi or noodle is a staple Indonesian food that you need to try when you are visiting. There are so many variations of noodle from Chicken, Pork, Combination - Halal or Non-Halal even every place or Province in Indonesia will have slightly different variation of noodles. This breakfast item is cheap, ranging from RP30,000 to most expensive RP80,000 or $3 to $8 per portion. Another breakfast items you need to try in Indonesia is Bubur Ayam or Chicken Porridge. Unlike any Chinese porridge, Indonesian Porridge is incredibly rich in toppings and flavor, eaten for breakfast, not so much when you are feeling unwell because the flavour is so rich and sometimes can be spicy too.

If you are thinking where to stay in Jakarta Indonesia, The Langham Jakarta is really good option for location, luxury and comfort. It is located strategically in SCBD - Indonesia City CBD and right next to cozy shopping center call Ashta Shopping Mall. The service is excellent, amenities and facilities are fantastic so we were really enjoying our 2 nights stay there at The Langham Jakarta. If you are on business trip to Jakarta Indonesia, The Langham is definitely one of the best hotel to stay for location and comfort. Thanks for Langham Jakarta and team for the warm hospitality (invite).

I hope you enjoy our first Jakarta Vlog, more Food Vlog coming out in the next few weeks.

LUXURIOUS KFC Jakarta Indonesia l INCREDIBLE AYAM Goreng & BLOK S Street Food Tour

The one and only most fancy luxurious KFC in Jakarta Indonesia - maybe the world?! After that, come join us for some of the best street food in Jakarta at Kawasan Kuliner Blok S and one of most famous ayam goreng (fried chicken) spot in Jakarta. If you are wondering what to eat in Jakarta or what to do in Jakarta, you don't want to miss this!

We started at KFC Naughty by Nature in Senopati, which offers a healthier-ish KFC option and of course more expensive than normal KFC. They got menu like KFC Katsu Curry, Wicked Wings glazed with Naughty Sauce, Grilled Chicken Burger and even Nastar Cake (pineapple cake).

Afterwards we were recommended by a local to check out Ayam Goreng Berkah - which was incredibly delicious. Indonesia is famous for its ayam goreng or fried chicken and because the chicken is ayam kampung or free range chicken, its smaller but extremely tender and juicy. There are variety of options here, including Nasi Uduk (coconut rice), Pete (stinky beans) and Sayur Asam (Tamarind Soup).

Before heading to our Street Food place, we went to Moja Museum in Jakarta Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) stadium - in the middle of Senayan area and checked out the exhibition. There were 3 spots you can explore, including an area where you can rent and skate - harder than it looks!

Finally, Kawasan Kuliner Blok S - this was an area full of street food stalls in Jaksel or Jakarta Selatan or South Jakarta!

We tried their Sate Madura H. Husain place that does sate ayam (satay chicken), sate kambing (goat satay), and sate telur (egg satay with chicken skin). There are different types of satay in Indonesia, well known ones include Sate Madura (from Madura Island, East Java) and Sate Padang (from Padang, West Sumatra). Then, we tried the giant beef meatballs called Bakso Kumis and Siomay Amy (Indonesian dumplings with peanut sauce). Bakso and Siomay are typical Indonesian street food that you need to try. Dip the kerupuk (crackers) to your Bakso soup and that's how local Indonesian eat their bakso! All food featured in this video are Halal.

If you are wondering how to go around or transportation options in Jakarta, download Grab or GoJek - ride sharing app on your mobile phone. We used Grab and GoCar around Jakarta and it was very convenient. We hope you enjoy our Third Jakarta vlog.
