California's Historic Roads - Highway S-2

A Trip On California's Historic Highway S-2

County Highway S-2 travels from the deserts of Imperial and San Diego County to the mountains. A good portion of the highway travels along the same route that was used from 1700s to get into California's interior, and was one of the major routes to California during the gold rush of 1849.

The S-2 goes from Ocotillo in the south to Highway 79 near Warner Springs in the north, and travels through Anza Borrego State Park. Along the way there is beautiful scenery, historic stagecoach stations, ranches that hosted troops in the Mexican-American War, and a path through stone that was carved by hand. It is a great day trip and one of the best drives in San Diego County.

The S-2 follows a lot of the same path as the Southern Emigrant Trail, The Butterfield Overland Stage Coach, and the trail taken by General Stephen Watts Kearny and the Mormon Battalion during the Mexican American War.

A Day Trip on California's S1 - The Sunrise Highway

California's Highway S1, also known as the Sunrise Highway, is one of the most scenic drives in Southern California. Located in eastern San Diego County, the Sunrise Highway is a National Forest Scenic Byway, making it one of the few in the area. The highway begins at the intersection of State Route 94 near Campo in the south and ends at the intersection of State Route 79, 6 miles south of Julian in the north. Over the highway's 30+ miles it travels through the Cleveland National Forest and Mt Laguna for some of the most scenic driving in the region, and some of the best views in Southern California.

15 Places to Visit on Historic Highway 80 in California

Historic Highway 80 was a coast-to-coast highway that traveled over 8 states and 2,726 miles, from Savannah, Georgia in the east, to San Diego, California in the west. While not as popular today as its cousin to the north, Route 66, Route 80 was just as historically important, and by the 1950s was bringing more people into California than Route 66.

Highway 80 has long since been decommissioned in California, but most of the old road is still drivable and there is still plenty to see. From the Sonoran desert in the eastern part of the state, to the mountains of San Diego's east county, to downtown San Diego, Highway 80 in California is well worth the time to explore. In this video we are going to look at 15 places to visit on Historic Highway 80 in California.

Exploring California's Highway S22 - From the Mountains to the Salton Sea

Highway S22 travels from the mountains of San Diego's east county, through the Anza Borrego Desert, and ends at the Salton Sea in Imperial County. As the S22 travels down the mountain to the desert, you are rewarded with some of the best desert views on any drive in the state. Along the highway there are a large number of fun and unique sites to check out, especially in Anza Borrego Desert State Park, which covers the majority of the drive.

California's S22 travels through the towns of Ranchita, Borrego Springs, and Salton City. In this video we check out the Ranchita Yeti, the Montezuma Valley Overlook, Borrego Springs, the Peg Leg Smith Monument, Fonts Point, the Badlands Viewpoint, the Calcite Mine Trail (with its fantastic slot canyons), and the Salton Sea.

Exploring California's Highway 62 - The Most Desolate Highway in California

California State Route 62 travels about 150 miles from Interstate 10 near Palm Springs, through the towns of Morongo Valley, Yucca Valley, Joshua Tree, and Twentynine Palms before heading through the Mojave Desert and ending at the Colorado River and Arizona border. Millions of people drive this highway every year, coming from Southern California's major cities to get to Joshua Tree National Park and the Twentynine Palms Marine Base. But the eastern 100 miles of the highway sees little traffic.

Highway 62 east of Twentynine Palms has been called the most desolate highway in California. It travels over 100 miles through the desert with very little signs of civilization, and virtually no signs of current civilization. There are absolutely no services for 100 miles. But desolate doesn't mean empty, and there is quite a bit to see along the highway.

The highway is filed with amazing desert scenery, World War 2 history, and strange art projects and in this video we drive its entire length and take a look at what there is to see on California's Most Desolate Highway.

We did a full video on Camp Iron Mountain previously, and you can find that here:

Looking for Abandoned Highway 395 in the San Dieguito River Park

US Highway 395 used to travel from downtown San Diego all the way to the Canadian border. The highway was decommissioned south of Hesperia, CA in the 1960s and the 395 in Southern California was bypassed or replaced by Interstate 15. Pieces of the old road still exist if you know where to look though.

We've looked at a few abandoned sections of Highway 395 in the past, but this section is unique, as a piece of the road has been repurposed as a hiking and biking trail in the San Dieguito River Park, allowing people to enjoy a bit of road that once carried thousands of motorists too and from San Diego.

In addition to the still remaining road, we check out the David Kreitzer Lake Hodges Bridge, the longest stress ribbon bridge in the world, and a meadow that Highway 395 once traveled through where we find some incredible highway history.

Forgotten Roads & Monuments in the Cajon Pass

The Cajon Pass is one of the most traveled corridors in the United States, with almost all the traffic between Southern California and Las Vegas traveling through it. Camp Cajon was built in 1919 on National Old Trails highway, the country’s first “ocean-to-ocean” highway. In 1926 that road became Route 66. Due to its location on the Cajon Pass, Camp Cajon quickly became known as the Gateway to Southern California. Camp Cajon disappeared in 1938, but a monument to this important early Route 66 stop sits in the Cajon Pass today next to a monument to early pioneers that is over a century old.

Along with several monument, traces of the old roads that date back to the 1800s can still be found in the Cajon Pass, just a few hundred feet from the modern freeway. Interstate 15 and Highway 138 travel through the Cajon Pass today, but before those roads there was Route 66, National Old Trails Highway, and the Cajon Pass Toll Road, a winding narrow road through Crowder Canyon.

In this video we visit the monuments to Camp Cajon, the 1917 Pioneers Monument, The 1800s Cajon Pass Toll Road, and track down the 1912 Pioneers Monument.

California's Highway S3 in the Anza Borrego Desert

There are a number of highways that cross the Anza Borrego desert in California and travel through Anza Borrego State Park. The S3 is one of them.

The S3 is classified is a short highway, only measuring about 12 miles in length, going from State Route 78 in the south to Borrego Springs in the north. That doesn't mean that there is no reason to stop a long the drive though. We explore an ancient water source that supported life in the desert for centuries, find some epic views, see incredible art, and visit a surprisingly green park in the desert.

Join as we drive the S3 in San Diego County, stopping at Yaqui Well, the William L. Kenyon Overlook, the Galleta Meadows statues, and Christmas Circle in Borrego Springs.

Unfortunately, no bighorn sheep appear in this video.

Exploring the Blythe Intaglios off US Route 95

The Blythe Intaglios are large geoglyphs located about 16 miles north of Blythe, CA, off US Route 95 near the Colorado River. It is unknown why they were created or who created them, but radio carbon dating puts their creation at sometime between 900 BCE and 1200 AD. At the Blythe Intaglios, three sets of geoglyphs are easily accessible, two by car and a third via short hike. While the intaglios are amazing from the ground, if you have a drone, seeing them from the sky is even better, as you can truly grasp how large they are.

The Infamous Old Highway 395 Bridge in Poway, California

Tens of thousands of people drive by the Old Highway 395 Bridge in Poway, CA every day, but most never see it. The bridge, which was in use from 1949 to 1967 on Highway 395, before being bypassed by Interstate 15, is only a few feet from the interstate but hidden from view. That lead to tragedy in 1986 when it was the site of the infamous Cara Knott murder, which was committed by an on-duty California Highway Patrolman. In this video we check out the bridge, and the San Diego Crime Victims Oak Park which is located just below it.
