Solar Power: The Sun’s Wide-Ranging Effects on Planets, Habitability and Life

The Sun has profound effects on how planets evolve and whether they can sustain life. We’ll take a look at how our star has changed worlds near and far -from Venus to Pluto. We’ll also look at how the sun changes the orbits of asteroids, something we have a very personal interest in understanding! While the sun itself is not responsible for the fast climate change we are experiencing today, melting ice and changing ocean levels are allowing sunlight into regions shielded from heat and light before, which will have profound consequences for our planet. Presented by Michelle Thaller.

Why Nobody Can Survive in the North Pole

A lot of expeditions have mysteriously ended in disasters. In the past, many ships got stuck on the ice, and people were stranded. Some ships have sunk and were never found. Not to mention that the Arctic Ocean underneath is still relatively unexplored. Did you know that even though the South Pole is colder than the North Pole, it gets approximately 20,000 visitors per year? Whereas the North Pole only gets about 1,000, including expeditioners. Why is that?

We’ve managed to explore almost all of our planet’s land, including all the inhospitable locations. And the North Pole made that list. So, what makes this place so dangerous? Why would Santa Claus choose to make this place his headquarters? What’s really going on there? Let’s try to figure it out!

SUMMARY:
- The ice is approximately 6 to 10 feet thick, and it’s floating in an ocean that’s anywhere from 3,500 to 18,000 feet deep.
- Even though the North Pole is literally ice, it’s actually warmer than the South Pole.
- The North Pole is ice surrounded by land, and the South Pole is land surrounded by ice. The waters underneath the North Pole are warmer than the floating ice – and the ocean warms up the air a bit.
- The North Pole has more complicated entry barriers. The main one is that it doesn’t have a fixed location. It’s just large chunks of ice that constantly move around the Artic Ocean.
- Imagine you’re walking in the woods and you get lost. Your best chance out of there is a compass. But, if you’re in the North Pole, then you’re in big trouble.
- Speaking of not being able to find your way out of there: figuring out what time it is can also be an issue in the North Pole.
- No-one really lives in the North Pole; even Inuit people who live in the surrounding Artic Regions of Russia, Greenland and Canada have never made it their home.
- There’s no drinkable water at the North Pole. Early Artic Explorers had a hard time dealing with thirst. In fact, finding water in the Artic is as difficult as finding water in the desert.
- Speaking of survival, there’s no vegetation in the North Pole. Trees require soil, and since the North Pole is a large block of ice, it doesn’t allow any plants to grow.
- Artic Foxes, Polar Bears, and many other terrestrial animals don’t often migrate to the North Pole, because it can be an unpredictable environment.
- Polar Bears are the largest bears on earth, and they can only survive in the freezing weather of the Artic.
- Scientists now believe that in 50 years there’ll be no Ice in the North Pole during the summer, and they’re carrying out expeditions to research things further.

There Is an Invisible Sea with No Shores

What comes to your mind when you hear the word “sea”? Probably sandy beaches, palm trees, the tide rolling in and splashing the shore. But what about an invisible sea with no shores? Bu the way, this sea has also got a mysterious reputation for swallowing ships. On its western fringes, you’ll find the island of Bermuda. Yes, that very Bermuda and its infamous triangle that’s been tied to tons of mysterious maritime disappearances.

The first official record of a lost ship was made in 1840 when the London Times reported the disappearance of the Rosalie. The interesting part is that it didn’t just disappear or get swallowed to the bottom of the sea. No, it was eventually found floating aimlessly with not a single person on board...

SUMMARY:
- The Sargasso Sea is located right in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, and its borders are all natural – they’re 4 major ocean currents. It basically sits in the whirlpool between them.
- On average, it’s about 1,430 miles long from east to west and 680 miles from north to south. The water in it is bright blue.
- The weather is surprisingly stable too, so the winds are really calm and weak.
- Sargassum seaweed can only be found in this very spot on Earth, and it grows and floats in a thick mat on the surface.
- Christopher Columbus himself crossed it in 1492. He actually thought he’d reached some land as he got into it because the seaweed was so dense.
- The first official record of a lost ship was made in 1840 when the London Times reported the disappearance of the Rosalie.
- It looked as if people onboard had either abandoned ship or simply vanished into thin air.
- In 1881, the American schooner Ellen Austin encountered another ship traveling through the area with no passengers whatsoever.
- Some marine experts believe it has something to do with the seaweed and the huge whirlpool that it’s floating in.
- The big whirlpools are so strong that they can catch a ship and drag it inside them. The smaller ones travel as mini-cyclones in the air, disturbing the water below them.
- This stuff is a unique biological phenomenon. It doesn’t get into the sea with water currents from elsewhere, but is actually native specifically to the Sargasso Sea.
- Unfortunately, not only turtles and fish travel with the currents right into the Sargasso Sea. The moving waters also carry garbage with them, including plastics that aren’t biodegradable.
- It was first found in 1972 and is only getting bigger with time. At present, it’s hundreds of miles in size!

9 Awesome Facts About India Tourists Can't Believe

Long ago, when giant lizards roamed the Earth and Netflix wasn’t around, the Asian continent got crashed into by an unexpected visitor that ended up being a life-long neighbor. I’m talking about India and its fascinating history since its days as a massive piece of land floating in the ocean!

SUMMARY:
- If you think plastic surgery is a modern convenience, you’re up for a big surprise. India had it covered more than 2,500 years ago, way back in the 6th century B.C.E.!
- Up until the early 18th century, India was the only source of diamonds in the world. According to the Gemological Institute of America, these precious stones were first discovered and traded in the 4th century B.C.E.
- Civilized urban life as we know it dates back about 5,000 years in India. The Ancient History Encyclopedia says that, by 2600 B.C.E., dozens of towns and cities belonged to that civilization.
- Speaking of better social conditions, during the Vedic period, which lasted from about 1500 to 500 B.C.E., the Indian society was probably the most equal in the known world at that time.
- The concept of “zero” and the rules of its use were first invented in India at around the 7th century C.E. Before that, the idea of “nothing” hadn’t even been treated as a number.
- “Shampoo” is derived from the Hindi word “champo,” which means “to massage” or “knead.” And the first mention of this “head kneading” was by Greek historian Strabo back in the 4th century B.C.E.
- One of India’s greatest minds lived in the 5th century C.E. His name was Aryabhata, and he wrote a treatise on astronomy that became a foundation for many later studies.
- Do you play chess? Even if you don’t, you know what it is. But did you know that its ancestor was born in India too? The ancient game was called chaturanga, and it appeared at around the 6th century C.E.
- India wasn’t always a “subcontinent.” In the era of dinosaurs, over 100 million years ago, it was actually an island! It had broken off from a supercontinent and slowly but steadily traveled north, arriving to its present-day location in just about 50 million years.

Imhotep. The name has been made famous by Hollywood mummy movies but the real-life man of this name was perhaps even more extraordinary. He is credited with designing the Step Pyramid, the very first of these iconic monuments, and long after his death he became a folk hero, and eventually a god. Despite his status, his tomb has never been found. Two thousand years after he lived, the ancients made thousands of offerings to him around a group of tombs of Imhotep’s time. Could one of them have been the final resting place of the man himself?

This version of the talk was recorded in November 2020 for the North East Ancient Egypt Society (UK).

Sunpower panels vs Trina solar - Real life testing

testing a 310w sunpower and getting an idea of how multiple things impact the watts. towards end you will see most of my tests were with a panel that was 10% lower in watts than another.

sunpower is clear winner as expected but the much cheaper Trina did really well and it is a 300w panel for comparison.

The Messier Objects - Images by Gary Imm

Charles Messier was an 18th-century astronomer who focused on discovering new comets. To avoid confusion in his searches, he compiled a catalog of deep sky objects such as galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters which could be confused with comets in the telescopes of that time. Over time, this journal evolved into the Messier Catalog, a list of 110 of the most famous deep sky objects. Well over 1/3 of them are located beyond our Milky Way Galaxy. This video shows astrophotography images taken by Gary Imm of each of the 110 Messier objects, along with fun facts about each object.

MYSTERIOUS TRIANGLE ON THE ISLAND OF PAG

On Croatian island Pag, near town of Novalja, has been in 1999 discovered an interesting triangular pattern, imprinted to rocky terrain. It is generally anticipated it has been artificially created about 12,000 year ago. During the years this triangle became a destination of many researchers and tourists from all over the world. This place visits annually up to 25,000 people. In 2011 the Pag Island visited an expedition of WM magazine journal. We have documented recent condition of the pattern a carried out measurements. It resulted into comparing of presented theories of his possible origin with reality.

Zagreb geologist assumes, that Pag Triangle was created by space ship landing. It should supposedly occur 12,000 years ago, in Neolithic era. According to him prove it the holes serving to anchoring the space ship on the table with the pattern. According to many is Pag therefore landing place of an alien craft, shrine of Neolithic hunters, observatory, imprint of giant footprint, remnants of Dalmatian civilization. Believers see in the pattern depiction of Holy Trinity.

Are conclusions of the researchers right? Is the triangular pattern on Pag Island a place of factual landing of ET civilization? At those and other question tried to find an answer our expedition.
