5 Reasons to Shoot Film

How to Shoot 35mm Film (Story 1)

Film Camera: Canon A1 with a 50mm f/1.4 Canon lens -- FujiColor Superia 200
Video Camera: Canon 5D3 with a 35mm Summicron F2 (1970) Leica lens

This is our first STORY in our new Snippet/Story style and we are so very excited to share it with you.

This week we tried to weave the beautiful experience of film photography with a bit of a how-to-video with the hopes of inspiring you to get out and capture your environment.

The entire experience of shooting film from choosing your film stock, to manually loading the film, to the sexy sound of winding the film after each photo, well it all just begs you to slow down, to focus on the moment at hand, and take it all in and then... the most important part... to stay present. No checking how the photo turned out, no re-taking the selfie, not even the need to see how many likes it got. Nope, a film camera gives you the luxury of hoping that you captured the moment and letting that be enough.

And while I can go on and on about the lessons that film has already taught me - and this was just my first roll ! - the main thing that making this story taught me is how lucky I am to have a partner as patient and thoughtful as Lou! His work ethic is unlike anyone I have ever met and the passion he pours into creating these beautiful moments each week never ceases to amaze me.

I'm grateful for this week's video for reminding me of time spent: hanging at second hand camera stores, capturing special moments with dear friends, and enjoying perfect moments of summer when you feel surrounded by love.

7 Reasons Why I Shoot Fujifilm

Out of the many camera brands, why fuji? What makes Fujifilm cameras so special? Today, we'll delve a bit into this topic as I share my thoughts on the brand. As I own quite a few fuji cameras, I'm obviously a bit biased. However, hopefully my thoughts on the cameras and the company can offer some insight and help you if you are considering a fujifilm camera.
If you already shoot fuji - what are some reasons why? In your experience, how do Fujifilm cameras compare to other cameras?

TOPIC OF THIS VIDEO:
In this video I am going to show you 5 tips, how you can make more cinematic GoPro videos with your GoPro Hero 8:

1. Settings:
It is important to have the right settings if you want your GoPro Hero 8 footage to look cinematic. I quickly show you how to set your camera up. If you want to know that more detailed, then watch this video, which is about cinematic settings for the GoPro Hero 8:

2. Camera Moves
Your GoPro Hero 8 videos will look much more cinematic if you have different type of shots in it. Usually I filmed with my GoPro Hero 8 just straight and the shots looked always great. But if you take your GoPro and you add to your shots different camera moves, your final edit of the cinematic GoPro video will look much better. I show you an example in this video.

3. Stop & Go
The GoPro Hero 8 has a new feature called Time Warp 2.0. With this updated Time Warp you can now stop your video to film in normal speed with one click, and then change back again to a Time Warp. If you know how to use this new feature of the GoPro Hero 8 you can make your GoPro videos look more cinematic.

4. Transitions
Transitions are an important thing in cinematic GoPro (Hero 8) videos. I show you one example of a very easy transition you can do with any camera. If you would like to learn more GoPro (Hero 8) transitions you can watch this playlist where I have a lot of new GoPro transitions for you, so you can make more cinematic GoPro videos:

5. Instagram
I have been asked a lot, how I export my GoPro (Hero 8) videos for instagram, because they always look great. That's why I quickly show you my exact export settings, so you can just copy them to be able to upload as well high quality cinematic GoPro Hero 8 videos on Instagram.

How to shoot 35mm Film (A Non-Pretentious Guide)

I love teaching friends and family how to shoot film, but let’s be honest, I’m the least concise person I know, and sending a link is more efficient than explaining how to shoot film 100 different times to 100 different people. I’ve been shooting film a while now and these are my tips/ simplified guide on how to get started for yourself! Some ppl make film intimidating and it’s really not! Its a ton of fun and want you to join in.

There are plenty more things I would have loved to include in this, but it would have been too long. Are there going to be times when certain things I said in this video don’t really apply?! OF COURSE. For instance, yeah, sometimes you’re going to be on your lowest f stop and have your SS be 3 full seconds for a night time exposure. These are awesome and creative exceptions, but quite frankly, information that would bog down people who are just at the beginning of their film journey!

If you are a film know-it-all and you’ve come here to fight in the comments about how much more than me you know, please leave. This is not the space for that. I am not the film master and you are not the film master. We all have a ton to learn from one another and your fragile ego is something that is not going to get applauded here. With that bein SAID, welcome everyone, new or well-versed :)

Comment any questions you have! Or things you would want in another video. I'll do my best! There are plenty of other awesome tutorials on youtube that might have different pointers/perspectives than I have here so it’s worth a shot to look around and see what works best for you :)

Shoot 35mm Film Prague: Bridges & Boats (Story 15)

.

This was the first roll of film that I shot in Prague and I am so happy with how it turned out. I don’t want to spoil the video for you if you haven’t watched yet, but let's just say the Bridges & Boats theme expands a bit as the day progresses.

I mention at the end of the video how breaking my arm forced me to slow down with the camera. Before the injury when Lou and I would shoot these videos more often than we’d like to admit the actual shooting of the film wasn’t the focus. Instead the composition of the video took priority. Sometimes there would be moments where I would think there was a photo I’d like to take and then Lou would film me walking over and as I pulled up the camera, I would realize that the shot wasn’t actually something I liked or thought worthwhile enough to capture. But knowing that he was already rolling (and we shoot RAW so file size is always an issue not only for storage but our memory cards too!), I would just take the shot. So long story short, on this roll we had to change our workflow - instead in almost all of the photographs, I would go compose my shot, figure out my settings, and then Lou would start rolling and I would go take the photograph. Not only did I feel way less rushed and like I was composing better, but I also had way more FUN! It felt like I was actually taking the time to see the world around me and choose the scenes that were most interesting to me. Film photography is just a hobby of mine, but shooting on this trip to Prague made me realize how it can actually help me remember to slow down and focus on the important things instead of just trying to complete the task at hand.

If you want to see all the photos from the roll check out our latest blog post here:

Tip 1: The settings are really important to get a cinematic style. I show you exactly how to set up your GoPro Hero 7.

Tip 2: Although the new GoPro 7 has the hypersmooth mode, you still need to film in a smooth movement. That means your arm, which is holding the camera, has to be as stable as possible and I show you how you exactly how to achieve that.

Tip 3: Connecting one shot to another is really important if you want to have a cinematic end result. Speed ramps are great and very simple to connect your shots in a cinematic way.

Tip 4: Since the GoPro Hero 7 is pretty small, you can place it anywhere and film from very special angles. I tell you why special angles improve your videos.

Tip 5: In the post production process you can tune your videos to another level. Editing is really underrated in film making, so try to spend more time cutting your videos, adding music and sound effects and especially color grading your video.

Fine Art Photography and Why I shoot 35mm Film

fat-creative.com
A behind the scenes story of the process involved to my Fine Art photography. I use bulk cinema film. With a bulk loader and empty film cassettes I make a 36 exposure rolls of 35mm film. I use several different kinds of film and that's why all my film rolls are labelled and it becomes part of the process to prepare and organise the film stock. I develop negatives myself in the studio, both colour and black and white and then I scan and archive them-this process is the reason why I fell in love with film.
