JIM THORPE, PA: Stunning Destination in the Lehigh Gorge and Pocono Mountains

Jim Thorpe is the seat of Carbon County, located on the Lehigh River north of Allentown, and at the southern end of the Pocono Mountains of Northeastern Pennsylvania. It has a large history with coal and railroads, and is currently a major biking and white river rafting destination. The borough is split into three sections, with downtown, a section up the hill, and a section across the river where Jim Thorpe is buried. It's a long and confusing story about how Jim Thorpe ended up here and how the town was named after him, but it just adds to the mystery of this place. Enjoy!

Tomoka State Park Tour & Review

Tomoka State Park is an hour or so from Orlando and just ten minutes from Ormond Beach. Tomoka State Park offers kayak rentals at the Tomoka Outpost camp store located right within the park! There is a boat launch as well. The Campground has 88 sites with power and water only, Tomoka does have a dump station. Tomoka is less than a 10 minute drive to Ormond Beach and the beach is a must do day trip. The hiking trail around the peninsula is really nice with lookouts to the water scattered along the way! Tomoka is situated perfectly for those traveling north and south along I-95. Great for a day trip to kayak or longer camping vacation!

#425 Santa trains | Tamaqua to Hometown High Bridge

Reading & Northern's steam locomotive #425 will soon go out of service for her 1,472 overhaul, but before then she will spend four days pulling Santa train rides.

This video covers Saturday, December 3th and Sunday, December 4th when the rides were based out of Tamaqua, Pennsylvania. It covers the northbound runs between Tamaqua Station and Hometown High Bridge. These runs were the first and last trains of the day.

On the final Sunday run they turned the train at the Haucks wye, so there's a slight continuity issue where you'll see 425 leading the southbound train after that.

#425 is a Baldwin 4-6-2 Light Pacific originally built in 1928 for the Gulf, Mobile, and Northern Railroad. She has been delighting passengers for Reading & Northern (formerly Blue Mountain & Reading) since 1985. On this run she had her auxiliary tender and GP38-2 diesel #2012 at the rear. The whistle will sound different in the shots, because on Saturday she wore a Nathan 3-chime and on Sunday she wore a Southern 3-chime.

I also caught three RDCs (#9167, #9166, and #9168) on their outbound and return trips through Tamaqua Station, and I caught the North Reading Fast Freight (NRFF) passing through East Mahanoy Junction while 425 was at the wye. But keep your eyes peeled for the craziest catch of all - a subway car passing 425 through Tamaqua! Seriously!

Lots of other YouTubers were out chasing too that weekend, and I encourage you to check out my friends' channels and editions of this event at @JPVideos81, @PANortheasternRailfan, @LRSX, and @ThePennsylvaniaRailfan.

Driving Around Downtown Normal, IL in 4k Video

Filmed on January 31st, 2023, I drive around Uptown Normal, IL to check out what's happening.

Normal is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2020 census, the town's population was 52,736. Normal is the smaller of two principal municipalities of the Bloomington–Normal metropolitan area, and Illinois' seventh most populous community outside the Chicago metropolitan area. As of 2022, Chris Koos has been Normal's mayor since 2003.

The main campus of Illinois' oldest public university, Illinois State University, a fully accredited four-year institution, is in Normal, as is Heartland Community College, a fully accredited two-year institution. There was also a satellite campus of Lincoln College, which offered associate degrees as well as four-year programs.

The town was laid out with the name North Bloomington on June 7, 1854, by Joseph Parkinson. From its founding, it was generally recognized that Jesse W. Fell was the force behind the creation of the town. He had arranged for the new railroad, which would soon become the Chicago and Alton Railroad, to pass west of Bloomington then curving to cross the Illinois Central Railroad at a point where he owned or controlled land. Most of the original town lies south of these tracks, with Beaufort Street as its northern limit, and some blocks west of the Illinois Central and north of the tracks. Fell, his brothers, and associates quickly laid out many additions to the original town.

The town was renamed Normal in February 1865 and officially incorporated on February 25, 1867. The name was taken from Illinois State Normal University, a normal school (teacher-training institution) located there. The school has since been renamed Illinois State University after becoming a general four-year university. Normal is adjacent to Bloomington, Illinois, and when mentioned together they are known as the Twin Cities, Bloomington-Normal, BN, or BloNo.

In 2007, the town council voted to name the downtown area Uptown Normal, and, as of 2011, Uptown Normal is home to the Children's Discovery Museum, Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, Hyatt Place Hotel, Uptown Station and Town Hall, and a variety of local shops and restaurants all centered around a roundabout. The district is also home to the historic and non-profit Normal Theater, a restored Art Deco theater owned by the Town of Normal that runs classic and independent films.

In 2005, Golf Digest ranked Bloomington-Normal as the Fifth Best American City for Golf in their Best in America Metro Golf Rankings. Golf Digest ranked America's largest Metropolitan Statistical Areas on four different criteria: access to golf, weather, value of golf, and quality of golf. #driving #travel #drivingtour

Part II: Schuylkill Valley Heritage Rail Trail (Middleport to Tamaqua, Pennsylvania USA)

hThis is a 7+ mile bike ride I took on Pennsylvania's Schuylkill Valley Heritage Trail from Middleport to Tamaqua. The first part of this series was the ride from Tamaqua to Middleport, PA. The trail goes over rolling hills through Pennsylvania's Anthracite/ Pocono Mountain Region, paralleling State Route 209 North (to the left). The actual direction of travel in this video is East. Th area to the right of the bike trail is generally forested, with many areas posted NO TRESSPASSING; many of which are old anthracite coal mines. The trail is rough graded with loose gravel. I fell off of my bike several times (not sure which direction I was headed). To improve speed, since I am basically doing Part I in reverse, I rode on State Route 209 at various points. State Route 209 has a very wide (whole lane) shoulder, suitable for bicycling. I went 2-3 times as fast on the state highway, however it was much noisier than the bike trail. The last 1- 1.5 miles is generally downhill and fast as I ride into Tamaqua. I stop by the sign for selfies, before heading to my car. I was supposed to head ho mbv e on September 2, 2019. At the end of the video you will see the accident my vehicle was involved in, which resulted in only minor injuries, but both vehicles were totaled. I ended up having to stay in the are as until 9-4-2019 (day after labor day) to get a rental vehicle to drive home. I had to leave my yellow sea-kayak, which I picked up nearly 3 weeks later with a box truck. I did not get s replacement vehicle until November 2019.

FYI- This trail in located in East Central, PA and not the same as the Schuylkill River Trail (which is better known and located in the Southeast part of PA)

Schuylkill River Valley National Heritage Area - Activities Galore (Vlog)

Located in Easter Pennsylvania is the Schuylkill River Valley National Heritage Area. My son and I chose 10 key locations along the river to visit in one day. Among the stops were the Pioneer Tunnel Cal Mine, Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, Tamaqua Train Station, the Heritage Center, Hopewell Furnace and Lock 60.
