Novodevichy Cemetery is the most famous cemetery in Russia
The Novodevichy cemetery was inaugurated in 1898. The total area of the cemetery is 7.5 hectares.
In the Soviet era burial in the Novodevichy Cemetery was second in prestige only to burial in the Kremlin Wall Necropolis. Among the Soviet leaders, only Nikita Khrushchev was buried at the Novodevichy rather than at the Red Square. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, the Kremlin Wall is no longer used for burials and the Novodevichy Cemetery is used for only the most symbolically significant burials. For example, in April 2007, within one week both the first President of the Russian Federation Boris Yeltsin and world-renowned cellist Mstislav Rostropovich were buried there.
Today, the cemetery holds the tombs of Russian authors, musicians, playwrights, and poets, as well as famous actors, political leaders, and scientists. More than 27 thousand are buried at Novodevichy Cemetery. There is scant space for more burials.

In this video I got lost on a rainy day in Russia, more specifically in the Republic of Mordovia, in the middle of nowhere. So I decided to stop in a depressed village called Zhukovka for a 12 minutes vlog because it seemed abandoned to me. Although I stayed a few hours I hardly saw anybody there.
Walking around the village I suddenly found myself in a typical Mordovian cemetery where there were old crosses and old graves everywhere.
The cemetery is located in a forest.
The atmosphere was very oppressive.
It was definitely the most depressing walk in my life. I felt like in a scary fairy tale.
And the sleet has definitely also contributed to the oppressive atmosphere on this day.
But watch it for yourself...

A war memorial is a building, statue or other edifice created to be a war celebration or victory, or to those who died or were injured commemorate war. Sometimes the term liberation monument is used. For most of human history, war memorials were erected to celebrate big wins. It was remembering the death of secondary importance. In the time of Napoleon, the dead were placed in mass unmarked graves.
In modern times the main intention of war memorials is not to glorify war but to honor those who are deceased. During the First World War, many nations saw a massive destruction and loss of life. More people lost their lives in the east than in the west, but the result was different. In the west, and in response to the obtained victory, most cities in the countries concerned set up memorials on which the memorials in smaller towns and cities often provided a list of individual names of local soldiers who were slain.
In many cases, the World War I memorials later expanded to include the names of local people who were killed in the Second World War. In August 2008, units of the Russian armed forces fought in the Caucasus 2008 war with South Ossetian militias within a few days the Georgian invasion from that began with an attack on Russian peacekeepers. This was the first combat deployment of Russian troops outside the Russian borders since the collapse of the Soviet Union. The Caucasus war ended with an independence victory within two weeks.

We Accidentally Found a Kabristan in Russia
Whenever we pass a Graveyard without feigning it, we mutter Rest in Peace to all those buried there, though we may not know any of them. For cemeteries always remind us, no matter how rich or poor we are, no matter whether you are a cop or thief, we take nothing away with us when we finally leave.
We went on our way to find one garden and we accidentally found this cemetery (Kabristaan) and this place is so peaceful, we felt so lively there so we thought we should share this experience of us with you all.

LYCHAKIV CEMETERY | Lviv, Ukraine | Roam Your Roots
On our Holocaust and genealogy tour of Poland and Ukraine, we made Lviv one of our home bases. Lviv was once an epicenter of intercultural intelligencia: of artists and scholars, writers and teachers. Previously known as Lwów, the city was once located in Poland, but after WWII it was absorbed by the Soviet Union. Then, in 1991, Ukraine gained its independence. Lychakiv Cemetery perfectly showcases this fascinating geopolitical history, with tombstones in Polish and Ukrainian, some ornate and some made in a classic Soviet style.
It wasn't until after visiting this cemetery that I realized we missed some of its more spectacular sights; particularly, the Field of Mars and the Lviv Defenders' Cemetery.
Nevertheless, a visit to Lychakiv Cemetery is MUCH recommended to anyone visiting Lviv!
