Puning, a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Guangdong Province, is managed by Jieyang City. According to the data of the seventh census, the resident population of Puning City was 1,998,619 as at 00:00 on 1 November 2020.
In 2018, Puning City has 7 streets, 17 towns and 1 township, and 8 township-level units, including 5 farms, 2 industrial parks and 1 Pu Qiao District, under its jurisdiction. The municipal government is located in the street of Liushabei. In the middle of the Rongjiang River Plain and the Lianjiang River Plain, the Tie Shan hills are lined with peaks and mountains, and in ancient times the cliffs and rocks were full of orchids and cymbidiums, so there is a Tie Shan Orchid as the city sculpture of Puning.
PUNING is a famous cultural town in Chaoshan, and a famous trade city with strong influence at home and abroad, especially famous at home and abroad for its ten professional markets such as garments, Chinese herbal medicines, tea and fruits. There are a number of large trade markets such as Kangmei (Puning) Chinese herbal medicine professional market, Puning International Garment City and Puning International Commodity City. First, we started by tasting the world famous cantonese roast goose, baked in a charcoal oven and covered in amazing goose drippings sauce, an amazing Chinese street food you must try!
Then, we went to try another famous Chinese street food, the Shuangpinai double skinned milk, served to you in the alleyways and street markets of Guangdong. It was sweet, and almost like an egg pudding.
Then we went to have another specialty Chinese street food, the guilinggao bitter jelly pudding, and a douhua silken tofu dish, on our way to a huge Chinese feast.
For our final meal, we visited a famous Shunde restaurant and got into the back kitchen to see the chefs preparing their world famous cantonese recipes. We ordered some extreme Chinese street food dishes, like Chinese sashimi, a grass carp which was cut open and served to us within minutes, a steamed snake and snake eggs, fried cicadas, and a lot more, so make sure to watch the whole video to discover along with us a ton of amazing Chinese street foods!

Beijing secret travel top list and hidden gem Chengde
You’re planning a trip to Beijing and don’t want to waste your time? Here are my top picks for the city in terms of
- cultural hot spots
- places in the city
- food you must try
If you’re staying little longer and want having a trip around Beijing I highly recommend to go to The Great Wall in the north of Beijing (I recommend Jinshanling) and even go further to the City of Chengde. It is a hidden gem without the tourist crowds and you’ll find some great places.
Here is the list of places in the video:
Beijing
- Hutong walk from the Orchid Hotel (The Toast restaurant - great brunch place) to Lama Temple.
- Lama Temple
- Wudaoying Hutong Street the opposite of Lama temple with plenty of small shops and cafe. Feels still real authentic and not too much renovated
- Eat - Beijing roasted duck. You can choose one of the fancy restaurants as in my video to eat with style or go to Liqun Roasted Duck in the Hutong to have it more fatty and down to earth.
- Ming Tombs are an option if you’re anyway driving longer distance to summer palace
- For sure you want to see the classics as Summer Palace to see the lake and temple. You can easy spend 3 hours if you want to go around the lake
- Forbidden City is a must but crowded always don’t forget your passport and remember “Monday closed”
- Temple of heaven (see my separate video)
- Eat - to jump into Chinese cuisine I highly recommend Black sesame kitchen at north east corner of the forbidden city. They serve about 10courses and have a show kitchen to cook it in front of you. Coco the waitress will explain the food... be curious and ask a lot. It’s adjusted to international customers “no bones in the chicken”
Great Wall
- Approx 1.5hours north of Beijing you’ll get to the Great Wall.
- There are many areas to get on the wall. I recommend Jinshanling. It is a good pick in terms of divers towers, good condition to walk and not too crowded.
- You can choose a variety of distances due to different exits down to the main entrance. I recommend take the shuttle bus at the entrance and the gondola to the wall. Safe your energy for the hike at the wall. Lots of stairs will require it.
Chengde
- Approx 1hour drive from Jinshanling
- The copy of the Potala Palace of Lhasa is called Putuo Zongcheng Temple and will give you a feeling that you’re in Lhasa. Amazing sight
- The copy of the summer palace of Beijing is called mountain resort and is pretty big as well. It has a nice lake, some historic houses and a pagoda. Nice wondering around.
- Last but not least lots of Temple in the surroundings of Chengde which I recommend you to visit the Puning Temple. It was almost empty of tourists and the huge Buddha statue with 1000arms was impressive.

The Qing emperors knew exactly where to shelter during Peking's hot summer months, in the Valley of Coolness, a beautiful forested river valley 250 kilometres northeast of Peking. In former Rehe Province, today's Chengde, is the old summer residence of the Manchu Dynasty that took more than a century to construct.
The Forbidden Palace and its park and gardens are now open to the public. Just as in Peking, the emperor went about his official business in the southern front hall with the royal living quarters situated in the rear section of the complex. The huge garden, with its many ponds and bridges is encircled by a 10 kilometre wall beyond which are several large valleys. The garden covers 560 hectares and is the largest Imperial park complex in China, a unique architectural work of art.
The temple monastery of Xumi-Fushou-Miao is one of the most impressive buildings in the city. Translated, the temple's name is, Happiness and Longevity of the Summer Hill. The temple was built in 1780 to mark the visit to China of a senior Tibetan religious dignitary, the sixth Panchen Lama, and is a replica of what was his own monastery in Tibet.
The Mahayana Pavilion is the centre of Buddhist religious belief, namely, Sumeru Mountain. Thus the five-story building is located in the middle of an architectural mandala. The magnificent opulence of the Pavilion was a reflection of China's vast wealth. Each one of the architectural elements that are situated close to the Mahayana Pavilion adhere to the disciplined structure of the Buddhist Universe.
In the 18th century, China had become the greatest and most prosperous Empire in the world. The magnificent summer residence of the Qing Emperor and its surrounding buildings are a glorious and remarkable demonstration of ultimate power.

At night in Puning, Guangdong, the temperature is getting cooler, and everyone flocks to the street to taste the food night market. There are three old restaurants on the corner of Xinguang South Road, known as the Golden Triangle of Food, which are all food stalls full of fireworks. The stir-fried beef Fenqian is topped with rich sauce, the bitter gourd, ribs and abalone soup that relieves the heat, and the braised beef offal is very tempting. Puning-style rice roll, luxurious additions and marinade, every spoonful is a treat. The sweet Xilu lotus root soup and pork bones with garlic oil are a combination. The small street corner is the epitome of Chaoshan cuisine.

Shantou is a prefecture-level city on the eastern coast of Guangdong, China, with a total population of 5,502,031 as of the 2020 census and an administrative area of 2,248.39 square kilometres. However, its built-up (or metro) area is much bigger with 12,543,024 inhabitants including Rongcheng and Jiedong districts, Jiexi county and Puning city in Jieyang plus all of Chaozhou city largely conurbated. This is de facto the 5th built-up area in mainland China between Hangzhou-Shaoxing, Xian-Xianyang (12,283,922 inhabitants) and Tianjin.
Shantou, a city significant in 19th-century Chinese history as one of the treaty ports established for Western trade and contact, was one of the original special economic zones of China established in the 1980s, but did not blossom in the manner that cities such as Shenzhen, Xiamen and Zhuhai did. However, it remains eastern Guangdong's economic centre, and is home to Shantou University, which is under the provincial Project 211 program in Guangdong.

Once the summer residence of the Chinese Qing Emperor, Chengde is full of historical significance. Construction of the spacious and exquisite palace lasted almost throughout the 18th century. In 1792 this architectural masterpiece was finally completed and in addition to this spacious building several monasteries and temples were also built, the 'Eight Outer Temples'. Pule Si, 'The Temple of Universal Joy', is situated in the middle of the sanctuaries' Eastern section. The Eight Outer Temples symbolize various Chinese ethnic groups. Those who were loyal to the emperor were duly honoured within this temple area. Thus, numerous characteristic, cultural and traditional elements of various of the country's regions were incorporated into both art and architecture. The Temple of Universal Joy, Pule Si, and the relatively remote sanctuary of Shuxiang Si, respectively represent the North and South of the Chinese Empire. The main administrative building within the Pule Si Temple is the circular Pavilion Of The Dawn, Xuguang Ge and is a replica of the Heaven Temple in Beijing Washing Bat Hill, to which there is a chair lift, is close to the settlement. The architecture of the Heaven Altar in Beijing was studied extensively several years before construction of the Pule Si Temple. In 1749, Emperor Qianlong ordered that the temple be extended. In Chengde, profound symbolism was also important. The location, extension and decoration of the buildings were designed to create a perfect harmony. In the 18th century China had become the greatest and most prosperous empire in the world. The magnificent summer residence of the Qing Emperor and surrounding buildings such as the Pule Si Temple illustrate a glorious and remarkable demonstration of ultimate power.

My Guangdong trip highlights 2023
I was in Guangdong for 10 days with my family, with the purpose of visiting relatives and an introduction to the ancestry to my kids.
Spent 5 days in Guangzhou for food hunting and enjoyment, few days back in our ancestral home for prayers and visiting our relatives, a day trip to Chaozhou and Shantou which isn't far from our ancestral home.

Arrangements was last minute as the Malaysian government announced the visa free travel between Malaysia and China. I got to save quite a fair bit of money on visa fees.
My ancestral home is located at 石盘村 shipanchun in Puning. There is still an offset on the google maps for China but all in all, i tried using google maps and it works decent. Not accurate but decent and plenty of room for improvements. That being said, you guys out there should only use it as a rough guide and not navigate. Use their local available instead. Accuracy still suffers due to the offset.
