For state #5 in our “50 States in a Year” series, we’re in the Mountain State! West Virginia is one of those states that tends to get overlooked. Most people don’t even realize all that this beautiful state has to offer. Being the most mountainous state in the US and having 78% of its landmass covered in forest, West Virginia is the outdoor enthusiasts dream! We started our trip at Winterplace Ski Resort where we spent the morning learning to snowboard at their renowned ski and snowboard school before working our way north through the nations newest National Park, New River Gorge National Park and saw the longest steel arch bridge in the US! We then headed to the state capital of Charleston where we had one of the best meals of our lives at 1010 Bridge! Needless to say, we were pleasantly surprised with how much we fell in love with West Virginia after our winter wonderland visit!

The first stop on our East Coast skiing adventure is Winterplace Ski Resort in Ghent, West Virginia. This used to be our go to day trip for skiing back when I was in high school, and this is my first time back at Winterplace in over 20 years.

Ski Winterplace WV Feb 2022
Ky (blue jacket) and Khanii (orange jacket) had their first snowboard lesson on Thursday morning and by Friday they were cruising down the mountain with Meredith (red and white jacket) in pursuit. (Watch in HD, Speakers ON) I'm grateful for quality time with them and for a safe trip to/from and on the mountain at Winterplace Ski Resort which is a super user-friendly mountain! The weather and snow conditions were ideal and everyone was so nice! A great experience. Southern West Virginia near Blakely.

West Virginia's Top 4 Ski Resorts
When it comes to downhill skiing, West Virginia, a tiny state, excels. Some of the greatest cities in the Northeastern United States, including Pittsburgh, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Richmond, VA, are serviced by three of the four ski areas, namely Snowshoe, Timberline, and Caanan Valley. Winterplace, the fourth resort, is to the south and provides amenities to adjacent smaller towns like Lexington.
These 4 resorts are perched high in the Appalachian Mountains to collect any snow that is going to fall nearby. This, along with powerful snowmaking equipment, guarantees that the slopes are well-covered both early and late in the season. The resorts have good uphill capacity and offer nice lodging either slopeside or in adjacent cities, making them ideally suited to weekend crowds.
In comparison to destinations to the north and west, where on-hill conditions can be bone-numbingly cold, West Virginia ski resorts tend to have mild winter temperatures. This makes West Virginia skiing similar to skiing in North Carolina.
For the Mid Atlantic region, vertical dips are respectable and range from 1,500 feet at Snowshoe to 650 feet at Winterplace.

We visited Winter Place Ski Resort between Ghent and Flat Top West Virginia and did snowboarding and skiing. There were several extreme wipeouts that Will experienced, but in the end, he was a pro. This video gives some great tips on how to be less uncomfortable on slopes and how to have a great time! It also includes a great view of Winter Place in West Virginia.

Can anyone ski at Snowshoe WV ski resort? Are there easy trails?
Our first ski trip to Snowshoe WV was so much fun! My crazy family went for my wife's birthday we rented a cabin at the foot of PowderMonkey ski lift, the slopes were right out our back door. We learned it's not easy for people that don't ski much. The easy green trails were super hard for my teenager girls with not much experience on the slopes. In this series we will go over what we learned and what we think you should know before you plan your first trip.
