Wild Greenland - home of musk oxen and arctic char

Arctic Wildlife in Greenland

A large variety of animals on land, at sea, and in the air call Greenland home. Polar bears, humpback whales, musk oxen, walruses, reindeer, and white-tailed eagles are just some of the many animals in Greenland.

Although, a large part of Greenland is inhabitable to humans the wildlife has a much larger domain. Some land mammals have adapted to life in the mountains, birds have their own motorways in the sky across fjords, oceans, and mountains, and sea animals have access to a global, boundless ecosystem.

Musk oxen

A wild flock of Musk oxen live in Härjedalen, the descendants of a group of five animals that left Norway in 1971 and made Sweden their home. By sharing knowledge, creating a peaceful mountain environment and keeping a gene bank alive, the centre has helped the flock gradually grow over the last few years.

Musk oxen in Greenland.

North east Greenland May 2013. The musk oxen initially gathered in a defensive circular formation when they saw us. After we stopped, they eventually started to run, but only a short distance. Calories need to be taken care off! The current world population of musk oxen is 80,000-125,000 (wiki).

Musk Oxen at Arctic Watch Wilderness Lodge

Every August, a special event takes place at Arctic Watch. The Muskox rut happens on the tundra near Arctic Watch. Male muskoxen compete for dominance of the local herds. Males will snort, paw the ground, bang heads and charge one-another. This event is extremely difficult to film! For the first time at Arctic Watch, it has been successfully filmed. Nansen Weber, wildlife photographer and guide at Arctic Watch, successfully filmed these magnificent beast out on the tundra.
