Why do so many people leave Costa Rica?

Richard is the owner/broker of Coldwell Banker Tamarindo, and the founder of the vacation rental company Please get in touch if we can help.

Summary
A proportion of the expats who set up a new life and buy real estate in Costa Rica leave after a few years. Why is that? Here are a few reasons why.

The ‘Never contenters’
You can often spot these ones early on. Either they are lamenting the good old days before all the gringos spoiled it for everyone, or alternatively they are sure that their lives will be infinitely happier once that road is repaved, or when the whatever is fixed, or the new cinema is finished. Or if they could just get those waitresses to walk a bit faster. ‘The Tamarindo shuffle’ My personal outlook is that I am content with what we have. In the mid 1990s I liked it, and now I like it too.

The plan was only ever a 3 or 5 year, or just a vacation home

I would say this is the biggest category. A lot of expats are not taking a forever decision and their return home is part of the plan. Nothing wrong with this at all, actually it makes the moving to Costa Rica decision easier if you can think that it is just for a certain period while you decide. Many choose to stay longer.

Didn’t do the research, didn’t take the time
In my video about ‘8 things I wish i knew before I bought’ (link below) I stress the need to take your time, do your research, and spend some time in Costa Rica before you buy. It may be cultural differences with the latin people, cost of living.

Change in circumstances at home
This is a big category too, either because of an elderly relative, or the children’s schooling, or a health issue

Victim of crime, relationship break up
A sudden unexpected event such as being a victim of crime, or having a relationship breakup sometimes causes people to pack up and go home. Crime does happen but fortunately it is rare, (though this depends where in the country you live) and violent crime even more rare

Boredom, lack of stimulation
Busy people who move to Costa Rica suddenly find a lot of time on their hands. This is good because a visit to the bank can take a couple of hours sometimes. But seriously it is important to find like minded people, join groups, take up sports
Not happy here, not happy there.
There is definitely a subsection of residents that is not happy deep down inside, so wherever they are geographically they will never be content. They move looking for something missing, but what is missing is within.

Visit Jaco - 5 Things You Will Love & Hate about Jaco, Costa Rica

Jaco, Costa Rica is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Costa Rica for good reason. There are amazing beaches, plenty of activities, friendly Ticos (people from Costa Rica) and a good tourist infrastructure, however there are some drawbacks to this great place, one being the tourist nature of the town which takes away some of the Tico-ness of the city, the riptides that can be dangerous and the resort centric feel of certain parts of town.

Our Gear:
We travel with a Microsoft Surface everywhere we go. I edit my videos on it & use it to backup my pictures and vides while we travel. It’s light and the best travel laptop on the market in my opinion.

We use Sony Alpha series cameras to film our videos. They are compact so you don’t look like a super tourist when you take great pictures and videos while you travel.

We use Manfrotto Tripods. They are compact, travel well, and honestly I would not use another tripod for my nice cameras.

Travel Plug that works in pretty much any country & has four USB ports. A must for any traveler.

Want to grab some great gear? We have used Osprey Packs for years & swear by them. Check them out here

Need some clothing for your next adventure? Patagonia has some pretty good stuff for all kinds of travelers.

Living in Costa Rica CULTURE SHOCK

#livinginCostaRica #movetoCostaRica #cultureshock

It's not hard to understand why people want to uproot their life and move to Costa Rica. It's a beautiful country with a laid back attitude and affordable living. BUT a vacation in Costa Rica is NOT the same as living in Costa Rica and there's a few things you need to consider before making such a BIG move. Consider- CULTURE SHOCK. It's real and there's a few thing you must know. Check out this video to not only have an understanding of Culture Shock but learn a thing or two about Costa Rican culture......... and maybe even a couple of things about yourself. Remember, there's a reason why some 60% of people who decide to re-locate and live in Costa Rica head back HOME in short order... and it usually has nothing to do with lush rainforests, volcanoes, National Parks, beaches, pristine waterfalls, surfing, exotic wildlife and exotic adventures.

Costa Rica's Government & Political Situation - Explained in 5 Minutes

Heads up! #CostaRicaMatt has a new email address and website - contact him now at matt@cbpacificrealty.com, and to find his exclusive Costa Rica real estate listings, please visit - thank you for watching!
More people are looking to move to Costa Rica for political reasons - they are disgusted, fed up and tired of the government and politics in their home country. Many want to know - what is Costa Rica's government like? Does Costa Rica have a socialist, sprawling government or is it in danger of becoming a single-party autocracy?

In a brief overview of five minutes, I try to give the information about Costa Rica's government that is most important to folks interested in moving to Costa Rica. This is not meant to be an kind of expression of criticism or support for any particular form of government, policies, etc. Instead I meant to put in plain terms a few things that foreigners want to know about the government of Costa Rica.

Those considering investing here also want to know about recent protests, demonstrations that were taking place while I recorded this on September 30, 2020. I touch on the demonstrations towards the end of the video.

I had previously put together a blog on more specific aspects of the government here, link below.

MY biggest problems living in Costa Rica as an Expat THE FIRST YEAR!

Living in Costa Rica is pure Pura Vida, but there are some problems. Check out my biggest problems living in Costa Rica as an Expat over the first year.
And watch till the end to see the biggest!

Costa Rica and Gringo Pricing

GRINGO PRICING HAPPENS!!! If you're coming to Costa Rica whether it's for vacation or to live here you have to look out for Gringo Pricing. The locals think that every foreigner is rich and therefor can afford to pay more for a product then what they were originally asking for. Some times this price hike is only a dollar or two and other times it's 300% or higher.

We've done a little experiment of our own and went around to various shops here in Costa Rica and asked about the price of different items. After getting a price quote we would leave and have a Tico (Costa Rican) friend go in and ask about the same product. THE PRICE WAS ALWAYS CHEAPER when our Tico friend inquired about it...

When shopping around Costa Rica you will get a better deal on things if you take a local around with you. Keep that in mind. Especially if you plan on living in Costa Rica and building a house.
