What is Dispersed Camping?

Dispersed Camping is an excellent way to camp for free when you don't have the means to pay for a camp site and/or experience the outdoors without the trappings of civilization.
The rules we discuss in this video are specific to Dispersed Camping in the United States.

⚠️ SAFETY when BOONDOCKING & DISPERSED CAMPING ????

With campgrounds closed right now, many people are looking into dispersed camping as an alternative. Understandably many people are concerned about the safety aspects of camping remotely on public land. It's a sad fact that there are criminals who will prey on campers and hikers out in the wilderness by intruding on and raiding campsites, breaking into vehicles or worse. Hopefully some of these camp security tips can help you stay safe and feel secure out in the wilderness whether you are living in an RV full time or out for the weekend tent camping on public lands.

OUR CREEPIEST DISPERSED CAMPING EXPERIENCE

We went out for a quick dispersed camping trip this past weekend prior to some work in Sedona Sunday evening.

While we were camping we had one of the most strange experiences with someone walking around our camp.

They came from the dead end of the small side forest road we were camping on and lingered for 5-10 minutes. Never once saw a flashlight to help them navigate the nearly pitch black forest. Only heard music playing from a phone or personal speaker as they slowly passed by.

We decided to move camp to an area we would have faster access to the highway.

Dispersed Camping on Public Lands Explained! (Finding Free & Cheap Campsites)

In this video I talk about the various types of public lands in the US (national forest, BLM, national park, national monument, national recreation area, national wildlife refuge, national preserve, wilderness area, wildlife management area, state park lands, etc.) and how friendly they are to dispersed camping.

How to find dispersed camping and how to car camp basics.

The basics of how to find dispersed camping, where to find dispersed camping and how to car camp. This is not a complete list, but covers sleeping in your car, what dispersed camping looks like, Tips on where to find camping spots, Tips on what to bring camping, Tips on some gear you need to start camping and why dispersed camping is better than campgrounds.

What to Know About BLM Camping

Did you know that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) oversees more than 245 million acres of land in the U.S.? These public lands are great for camping at little to no cost and offer a variety of outdoor recreation opportunities. While most of these properties offer dispersed camping and boondocking sites, some have more developed campgrounds with RV hookups and other amenities.

Here’s how you can find the perfect BLM campsite using Campendium, and what you should know before you camp on these public lands.

????️Filter your campsites. On Campendium, you can filter campground types to only show BLM locations. This way, you can start your campsite search in the right direction.

ℹ️Read reviews. Campendium reviews allow you to see what other campers say about each campground. From campsite images to cell phone coverage, these reviews provide valuable information you need to know to prepare for your trip.

????Reuse existing sites. Most BLM campsites are designed for dispersed camping and boondocking, meaning the existing sites are usually only marked by cleared, flat areas where others have set up camp. Be sure to use these sites in an effort to not disrupt the environment.

????️Stay limits. On most BLM lands, you can camp up to 14 consecutive days within a 28-day period. Plan your trip accordingly and don’t overstay your limit so others can enjoy these lands as well.

????️Leave No Trace. Always abide by Leave No Trace guidelines and pack out everything that you brought with you, including garbage. This way, others can enjoy these lands for years to come.

????Developed campgrounds. If you’re not looking for dispersed camping and boondocking sites, some BLM destinations offer more developed campgrounds with hookups and some amenities (for a small fee.) You can use the Campendium app to see what amenities and features each campground offers.

????Outdoor activities. BLM land typically offers a variety of outdoor activities from hiking to fishing, biking, hunting, and more.

This week we camped in the Hoosier National Forest. There are National Forest Campgrounds in the Hoosier National Forest, but we prefer the more secluded dispersed campsites. If you've never dispersed camped before, it can be a little stressful the first time, especially if you are not familiar with the area. We thought some of these tips might help.

Dispersed Campsites are Everywhere in this Forest

This weekend I set off looking for a dispersed campsite in Minnesota's Hill River State Forest. This was my first time in this forest. I used Google Maps to find pull-offs and open field. Initially I found two spots that looked promising. When I arrived, I found 4 spots that could have worked really well. All the spots I found can be accessed with a pull type trailer or a Class A or B. I would advise going to this forest during the dry part of the year. The Mosquitoes were horrible.
I went on a short bike ride, maybe 5 miles and found a 5th campsite and walking bridge that led to nowhere. I spent 45 minuets trying to catch fish, I had a few bits but never landed anything.
Today, as I am typing this, I have to laugh at how many mosquito bites I have on my head, neck and legs. I have been home for 2 days and the camper is still full of those darn Mosquitoes. I will be bringing something to keep the bugs at bay next week. Thanks for checking out the video.

Minnesota's Abandoned Forestry Campground and Dispersed Camping in a National Forest.

This weekend I'm continuing to explore Itasca County in Minnesota. I'm looking for the perfect boondocking or dispersed camping location. This video I have found campgrounds on Forestry Land, County Land and State Land. I decided to stay at an abandoned Forestry Campground and a dispersed Forestry Site. I must have thrown 1000 casts over the weekend. Did I catch a fish? You will have to watch!
Thanks for coming along.

How I Find Camp in the National Forest - Waking up to a Pollen Apocalypse

Finding last minute campsites in the National Forest is easy. I expected very few options being nearby a popular State Park that was at camping capacity AND being just North of Sugar Camp Scenic Byway. The 4Runner GEN5! had to compete w/ a Mazda sedan to tackle my camp's trail - it was a tie. Got pollen in my everything... Roaring River State Park, Mark Twain National Forest, Ozarks

Beas Lewis Flat Dispersed Camping Review - Boondocking near Capitol Reef National Park

Beas Lewis Flat Dispersed Camping Review - Boondocking near Capitol Reef National Park. We stayed the max amount of days and really enjoyed Capitol Reef National Park. The town of Torrey also has a lot to offer as far as restaurants. There is a really nice Phillips 66 where we got fuel and a general store to get supplies.
