From Lake Atitlán, Guatemala we are traveling to Chichicastenango, where the biggest street market of Central America is held on Thursdays and Sundays. You can really find anything you are looking for on that market, from modern goods like phone cases to traditional mayan robes and garments, vegetables, fruits, meat, you name it! On that day we could really feel what everybody is saying about Guatemala. It’s the country where tradition meets modern in the most sustainable way.

CHICHICASTENANGO - Today we’re exploring Chichicastenango a city in the highland mountains of Guatemala that’s home to the Chichicastenango Market, which is the biggest indigenous Mayan market in Central America. It’s a colorful overdose of all things you can buy, and a gathering of Mayan culture and customs. I was excited to visit to learn and to try as much street food as possible.
We met up with Roberto, our local Guide to Chichicastenango Market. He first took us around the market. We then saw the main fruits and vegetables section, everything pretty much fresh right out of backyards. We then tried Guatemalan chicharrones - or fried crispy pork. It was as tasty as always, and loaded with onions to give it a sweet and delicious taste.
After chicharrones we continued with our food tour in Chichicastenango Market on to eat at one of the best stalls in the entire market that’s known for their hen chicken soup and their special kettle cooked fried chicken. Both dishes were delicious, especially with some fresh tortillas. We also stopped by another similar stall to eat some more chuleta’s, a variety of fried meat cutlets.
In addition to all the delicious food, there’s plenty of areas of the market to explore and many Mayan cultural churches and cemeteries to wee while you visit.
It was another excellent day in Guatemala on this ultimate Guatemalan food tour!

This is a colourful open air area plenty of all types of stalls selling everything from clothes and crafts to fresh meat. It is a huge and chaotic market which comes at full potential on Thursday and Sunday. Be prepared to bargain hard and don't miss the Santo Tomás church, a place where you can witness a mix of catholic and maya ceremonies.

We've experienced so many beautiful cultural experiences traveling the world but we have to say, we didn't expect the market in Chichicastenango, Guatemala to be the intense experience it was. It’s a short journey from Lake Atitlan or Antigua and we think you MUST add this to your Guatemala travel itinerary.
It's become known as the largest market in all of Central America and quite possibly in the world. Immediately after getting off the bus and diving into the market, we were overwhelmed but our travel cups were full as we just observed local scenes play out.

GUATEMALA CITY, GUATEMALA - Welcome to Guatemala City, Central America, and today we’ll be going on an ultimate Guatemalan street food tour - eating some of the best food in the entire city!
Mercado Central, Guatemala City - We’re starting this street food tour at Mercado Central (Central Market) to check out all the amazing produce and especially avocados as this bustling colorful market in the center of the city. The avocados were delicious and the fresh fruits were amazing. We ate some delicious Guatemalan antojitos as Refacciones Doña Mela, Guatemala City and some adobada and beef soup at Comedor Angelica, Guatemala City.
Cevicheria Los Chavos, Guatemala City ( - After some sightseeing about Guatemala City, we then headed to Cevicheria Los Chavos for a unique Guatemala City style ceviche made with some surprising ingredients - like worcestershire sauce and ketchup!
Hot Dogs Ejecutivos el Chino, Guatemala City - Now we’re moving on to the the most famous Guatemalan street food - the shucos or Guatemalan crazy hot dogs literally! This is one of the places that started it all - everything is grilled over fire and there about a dozen meats and toppings that go on. It’s a huge celebration of a hot dog all in one bun, everything chopped and layered perfectly. It was very tasty, and I especially loved the layers of guacamole avocado.
Shucos Campo Marte - Finally another Guatemala City street food gem is Shucos Campo Marte where there’s half a dozen stalls are serving roadside shucos and the trans-metro - a huge bus sized hot dog!

On my fourth day in Guatemala in partnership with the Real Intercontinental Guatemala we explored Chichicastenango the most famous Maya market town in the country!
We started the day at 5:30am and drove three hours west to Chichicastenango. Are first stop in Chichicastenango was the arch of Gucumatz. This is the entrance to the city and also in the Maya religion to the under world!
We then walk through the whole city and I tried fresh orange juice, pupusas and home made ice cream. Everything was so good! From their we made are way to the Maya cemetery via the poultry market.
After exploring the maya cemetery we went all out shopping. I bought a ton of wood carved mask, Mariel bought some clothing and I bought a table runner for my wife.
We then visited Santo Tomas Church which is the most iconic spot in the city. It's famous because this church is a unified church between Catholicism and the Maya religion.
Next up we went to lunch at the Maya Inn hotel. He we tried some Culche and some Pepian de Pollo which is a traditional dish in Chichicastenango.
After exploring the whole town we drove back to Guatemala city and on the way we stopped at Iximche. This Maya archeological site is one of the most important because this is where the Spanish took country of the country.

Exploring the Market Town of Chichicastenango, Guatemala
In this episode of Guatemala Unplugged, David brings us into Chichicastenango's Church of St. Thomas, a place where both Christianity and traditional Mayan religion are mixed. Built atop an old Mayan palace, this has been an important spot for the local Mayans since the 16th Century. Unfortunately, there is no photography allowed, so you'll have to come and visit the spot for yourself! Shuffling through the markets, David ends up at the local mask and costume factory, where traditional masks and decorations are made and sold all around the country. David tries one costume and mask on for himself, and then takes a trip behind the scenes to a traditional Mayan sauna. A stone dome used to cure the sick and deliver babies, it's an ancient Mayan traditional that is still followed today.
