Some 1,600 islands, thick with greenery, form a maze of channels in the azure waters off northeastern Vietnam. Although people have lived in the region of Ha Long Bay for thousands of years, most of the islands remain uninhabited. But these coves and natural towers are rich with wildlife. For centuries, this spectacular seascape has inspired wonder.

The name Ha Long, Vietnamese for “descending dragon,” is reflected in a legend: Once, when the Viet people faced invasion, a dragon flew down from heaven to their defense. The creature sprayed not only fire, but also jewels that became the green archipelago.

The scientific explanation for the rock formations, known as karst, is also amazing. For millions of years, seashells and sediments fell to an ancient seafloor, forming solid rock. Tectonic activity raised the resulting limestone above water. Rainfall and rivers dissolved exposed rock, and carved valleys that flooded after the last ice age, creating this rare example of a karst field at sea.

Features include lakes and caves through the islands, and notches and tunnels where seawater has worn at the pillars' foundations. The fantastic landscape also continues into two adjacent national parks, on Cat Ba Island and Bai Tu Long Bay.

You can go kayaking, caving, or even take a ride in a seaplane to experience the grandeur of these enchanting tropical islands.

4K | HA LONG BAY, Vietnam | Spectacular Garden of Islands | TRAVEL GUIDE | 2022

Welcome to Halong Bay and A&A Travelling. Halong Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a very popular tourist destination in the northeast part of Vietnam. Halong Bay means the Bay where the Dragon descends into

Visiting Halong Bay is like stepping in a beautiful painting, where the sky harmonizes with fresh green water, embellished by giant stone mountains. With so much to offer for travelers, Halong
promises you an overwhelmed feeling right at the moment you arrive at the place.

The whole of Halong Bay or sometimes referred to as the Gulf of Tonkinhas an area of around 1,500 km2, which contains approximately 1,969 islands and islets made from karst limestone towering like skyscrapers throughout the bay, formed through millions of years.

TOP HALONG BAY TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

- Sung Sot Cave
legend tells that after defeating the An aggressors, Thanh Giong ( the Saint Giong)
helped villagers chase devils and demonds away from the village and flew to heaven. He left his stone horse and swore to keep protecting his people. Sung Sot Cave was where the villagers kept all the vestige of arms and Saint Giong`s foot prints, which became small lakes with huges stones surrounded. The name Sung Sot means amazed feeling and it was first found by French travelers and called Grotte Des Surprises(the cave of surprises) in a travell book established in 1938. Being one of the widest and most special caves, Sung Sot Cave is located in the center of the bay, inside Bo Hon Island. Despite having a small gate, the cave amazed visitors with its giant inner space, which probably explains the surprising name.

-Ti Top Island
In the early years, the island was less know and it was called the Graveyard island. The name was in memorial of the death of a French cargo ship crew, who faced disaster nearby and buried on the island. It was kept until 1962 when Ho Chi Minh visited the island with a soviet astronaut named Gherman S. Ti Tov. He asked the locals to name this island after Gherman`s, and from then on, Ti Top has become a symbol of friendship between Vietnam and the Soviet Union. Unlike other 2,000 tourist spots in Halong, Ti Top not only have a beautiful nature view but also owns a fabulous sandy beach called Ti Top Beach or Vang Trang Beach(which means the moon beach, because the sandy beach looks like the moon hanging onto the island mountain. If you only have seen one picture of Halong Bay, it was likely taken from the crest of the Ti Top Island.

-Dau Go Cave
History recorded an event when Dau Go Cave was the place where spear-shapes woodpiles were hidden by Vietnam soldiers to build a battle field and destroy Mongol`s ships during the war against their invasion in the 13th century. Dau Go Cave has a huge 5,000m2 space inside. From outside, the cave`s gate is filled with emerald hue with a shape of a jelly-fish. Surprised by the beauty of Dau Go Cave Khai Dinh Kingonce wrote a poem praising it and engraved it on the left of the cave.

Halong Bay area is less populated compared to other cities in Vietnam, due to the fact that the governement has moved all floating villages residents to the mainland for better living standards, leaving the whole bay for tourism. Halong residents are friendly and hospitable since their main income is driven by tourism, besides fishing.

The best time to visit Halong Bay
Located in the north of Vietnam with a tropical mosoon climate, March - May and September - November are the best months to visit the bay. We were there in Jully and the weather was still
quite good...

THANK YOU FOR VISITING

Whether this country is first or fiftieth on your list, our travel guide has all the information you need to know if you’re planning (or dreaming of planning!) a trip to Vietnam.

Hanoi more than delivers on urban excitement. If you’re looking for unique and mouth-watering food, the night markets of the Vietnamese capital should be your very first stop. Of course, Vietnam isn’t all fast-paced cities and rooftop bars. For a slower pace, head to Ha Long Bay and sail alongside limestone islets, with their lush rainforests towering above your head. The water is emerald-green, matching the vibrant greenery, and a sailing excursion here is like nothing else you’ve experienced before! A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the islets of Ha Long Bay are said have been thrown into the bay by a dragon protecting the people of Vietnam. Take a junk boat tour for a close encounter, or try scuba diving or snorkelling in the bay!

You’ll find a new adventure around every corner in Vietnam. From breakfast in the Bình Tây Market and a secret tunnel system in Ho Chi Minh City, to sailing along the Mekong Delta in a traditional basket boat, you can find your perfect trip - no matter what that looks like - somewhere in Vietnam.

There’s no time like the present to start planning an adventure of your own in this majestic country, so why not start today? Head over to TourRadar to explore the range of tours available, or watch more of our videos exploring Vietnam if you still haven’t gotten enough of seeing the beautiful views and incredible adventures you could be having.

Ha Long Bay is Overrated (Part 1) #shorts

After doing a 1 night 2 day cruise, our conclusion is that Ha Long Bay is overrated. It was one of the most expensive things we did in Vietnam and our least favourite. Yes, the views from the cruise are impressive, but once you get closer to the water when you go kayaking you’ll see the side of Ha Long Bay not shown on social media: all the plastic floating in the water. It is incredibly heartbreaking. We realize that maybe not everyone had this experience. Maybe it was a bad area, maybe it was bad timing, but this type of plastic is coming from somewhere and does not accumulate overnight. We really hope that this will be addressed in the future and that part of the money collected from these expensive cruises will go towards clean-up and education. There is a better area to visit in Vietnam with similar views and no plastic (we actually saw clean up crews helping maintain this area) and we had a much better experience there. Location of this place will be shared in our next post.

Vietnam's Ha Long Bay Is a Spectacular Garden of Islands

Situated in the Tonkin Golf, Halong Bay is one of the world's natural wonders. It is a bay with more than 3,000 islands, which time, wind and waves have sculpted into fantastic shapes. A helicopter ride gives you a unique view of the region.

Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay, a maze of jewel-like islands, inspires wonder with its fantastical outcrops, caves, and coves.

Legend says Ha Long Bay was formed by a Mother Dragon and her children, sent by the Jade Emperor to protect the Viet from foreign invaders. The dragons flocked from Heaven, spitting out pearls which formed small islands and stopped the invaders and destroyed their ships. Mother Dragon and her children didn’t return to Heaven after the battle, but settled in the bay; the Mother Dragon forming Ha Long Bay and the children, Bai Tu Long.

Exploring the islands of Ha Long Bay almost makes this incredible story seem true. Weaving through the almost 2000 islands while sitting atop jade-green water is surreal to say the least, spiritual at most.

You can go kayaking, caving, or even take a ride in a seaplane to experience the grandeur of these enchanting tropical islands.

Halong Bay sea forever remain a bright green color, flows quietly, absorbed, maze of jewel-like islands with time. Halong beautiful four seasons. In the spring, the lush vegetation shoots mike on limestone mountains. In summer, cool and clear, the sun shimmering particles fall down to the sea. Autumn, in the moonlit night, moonlit mountains inclined ball floating like gold leaf to earth.

With such special values, at the 18th Session of UNESCO’s Council of World Heritage held on 17 December 1994 in Thailand, Hạ Long Bay was officially placed on the list of the World Natural Heritage. In 2000, UNESCO recognized it as the World Heritage for the second time for its geographical and geomorphologic values. This confirms the global premier value of Hạ Long Bay.

Hạ Long Bay has an area of around 1,553 km2, including 1,960–2,000 islets, most of which are limestone. The core of the bay has an area of 334 km2 with a high density of 775 islets. The limestone in this bay has gone through 500 million years of formation in different conditions and environments. The evolution of the karst in this bay has taken 20 million years under the impact of the tropical wet climate. The geo-diversity of the environment in the area has created biodiversity, including a tropical evergreen biosystem, oceanic and sea shore biosystem. Hạ Long Bay is home to 14 endemic floral species and 60 endemic faunal species

Ha Long Bay Cruise Review #shorts

This is our honest Ha Long bay cruise review of V Spirit Cruises. The experience started off great but in the end we would not feel comfortable recommending it. To start with the positives, the staff was great, the room was lovely, and we enjoyed the sun deck. The food however was not the best, lunch was good but dinner was disappointing. We also felt a bit rushed following a schedule without much time to relax and enjoy the boat and the views. Overall we did not enjoy our Ha Long Bay cruise, but that is more about our experience off the boat rather than on it, which we’ll share more in our next post.
