VAN LIFE CONFESSIONS | the reality of van life is that it can be taxing on you to constantly be on the move, planning the next step and being aware of all the correct documentation/visas/etc you require to travel in a van through continents and countries. While most weeks we can take things in stride we've been feeling a little overwhelmed lately by the demand of van life in Europe especially after our van break-in last year and even more so after finding out that we are illegally driving in Spain. Planning a Trip and/or Want to Follow our Route? Here's where we went in this week's van life vlog in Morocco:
1. Small Lake near Aguelmam Azigza National Park
2. Drove through the mountains to the town of Midelt (Sunday souk & campground)
3. Slept near Ziz Gorge (near the town of Errachidia)
FYI We took the ferry from Algeciras to Tangier Med and it cost each campervan 180 euros and took about 1.5 hours. Tangier Med is a relatively new port and is very well maintained which led to a seamless border crossing. To all those making the journey, GOOD LUCK and remember not to bring your drone!

VAN LIFE CONFESSIONS | We were super nervous to take this leap and ferry over to Africa in our self converted Sprinter Van but after spending 2 full weeks in Morocco we've gathered some wonderful first impressions. What is van life really like in Morocco? Well, it's got a ton of awesome free camping, some questionable campsites (which = questionable hot showers), heaps of friendly and entrepreneurial locals, lots of souks (markets with fresh produce) and dirt roads with lots and lots of potholes. All things considered we think Morocco may be one of the greatest places we've ever traveled. It's all about having an open mind and welcoming these new experiences ????. My Raid Failure Lessons and Problem Solving.

Update: If you don’t want to watch video, but want to participate in problem solving. Please consider reading this so you understand what the problem actually is.
Currently I am looking for opinions on RAID 5, thunderbolt 3 units that are built to be portable and are mainstream enough to order in parts with 2-3 day shipping if failure of enclosure happens.
No, a NAS solution or any internet based solution what so ever is not the answer here. A NAS is just a raid connected to the internet. This would no have helped me.
- Please stop suggesting it.
- Any way I look at this I would be paused on work for at least a week, likely more.
- (unless I traveled with two editing raids by default, which I will do going forward.)
- The problem I’ve gotten myself into with mistakes I made means this might not just be a one week set back, it might be a 1 month set back do to how I managed auto saves. What I explain through this experience is that is entirely my fault. I could’ve been better prepared in this regard. Yes, when I have LTE I should consider backing up autosaves to the cloud
Our Limitations on the Road:
- internet is a non reliable, not regularly accessible asset. Even just uploading 1gb files can be a massive burden and involve driving hours to find internet via LTE.
- If there is household internet from friends it is painfully slow in a lot of locations
- I deal with producing and editing on average 2-10tb of footage in a given month. No normal Canadian internet can manage uploading that to the cloud without fibre. that is a non option.
What is my current setup:
- Redundant backups of all media/footage in 3 physical drives. in at least 2 locations
- When I hit the road, I take a RAID device with me (36tb raid for on the go editing of massive projects, 3tb a piece etc)
- Small drives with me on the road (between 4-8 at a given time) for duplicates of media/footage to mail to my backup location on the go.
What happens if my RAID fails under normal circumstances?
- I would purchase parts and get it up and running again, likely would take 1 week where we currently are based - However as I learned with my premium unit, parts and self repair are not a thing.
- If I can't get parts for raid I could buy a new one from another brand.
- Load my backups that I have with me onto it and keep going, or if necessary mail backups expedited from my backup location to me, reload to the new raid, and keep editing. This solution would hopefully only take 1 week to get back online.
So what happend in my specific case that might set me back a month.
- Even though I have footage backups, my autosaves did not have a fail safe beyond my raid.
- So even though the raid is redundant, if the raid fails entirely, the work progress is gone, even though I still have footage. This is a massive over site as a result of being too confident in my raid.
So in my chain of events:
- A raid controller failed in my portable editing raid. 36tb suddenly un readable.
- Only way to maybe read the files would be to get my drives into a unit that is identical. Sourcing an identical unit has proven really challenging. If I had my autosaves at this point I would cut my loses and just buy a new raid and start from scratch.
- *What are my current failsafes for this?* I keep backups of all my projects on other drives, in other locations, and some with me personally. I could expedite one of those backups to me, or load one I already have in the van, buy a new raid, and get right back to editing.
- *Whats the problem then?* I made the mistake in my transition to mobile editing to keep my editing autosaves next to my project folders on the raid. I was accepting potential drive failure, but did not anticipate entire raid failure.
Either way, with the problems I ran into (which are guaranteed to happen if you work with large data storage and didn’t invest in two entirely identical raid units), I would be delayed by at least a week to source new parts, even if I hadn’t lost my autosaves.

This week is all about NATURE as we head for Spain's Balearic island to escape the business of Barcelona. While we never miss a chance to live in a van in a new city, it doesn't take long before we too escape to nature! So, we ferry over to Menorca on an overnight trip and end up on the beautiful, peaceful island by breakfast! Just as we begin to settle into island time and the tranquility of life on Menorca we are met with another van life challenge... a van breakdown!

Alaska Seasonal Job Ep. 3 - VanLife to BoatLife 2022
In this video we have a few quiet days on the salmon tender boat waiting for commercial fisherman to bring in their catch. Sometimes the hardest part of the job is dealing with boredom and cabin fever. We go in to get fresh ice in our holding tanks to be ready for the next fishing opening. We finally see some fish but we will save that for the next video.

SOLO FEMALE VAN LIFE - In this weeks video its all about facing one of my biggest fears - THE DARK! As Nick is still out of action, I decided to take on van life alone in the wilderness. In all my years of travel and living in a van, I've never actually stayed alone and although a little bit embarrassing, I am afraid of the dark. A STUPID MISTAKE, VLOGGERS NIGHTMARE - VAN LIFE PORTUGAL - (NAZARE)
Our van life in Portugal adventures continue and you join us in Nazare on the west coast. Todays van life travel vlog is a little different as we unfortunately make a stupid mistake and delete all of our content... A travel vloggers nightmare! After 4 years of creating videos, this is the first time we've done this and we worked so hard filming and editing after a week of doing lots of cool things ready to share with everyone.... But the show must go on and we manage to salvage a few clips and show everyone that life isn't always great when working and living in a van as YouTubers.... We share some clips from a great van hangout in Peniche before heading to the Medieval market in Obidos, both amazing places to visit in a campervan whilst travelling Portugal.

VAN LIFE - HEAT, BUGS and BEING MOVED ON.. (first 24 hours back on the road)
We're back to van life and its going to take some getting use to again!
The last time we lived full time van life was in the UK in Winter and now its coming into summer in Andalucia, a very different experience !!
We need to learn to deal with the heat, bugs and everything else that this lifestyle throws at us, yes we've done it all before but not for a long time!
Today you join us in Benahavis on the Costa del Sol (Andalucia) our first night back on the road is spent at an abandoned hotel, but it wasn't as abandoned as we thought! We explore the beautiful river and gorge, get some wild swimming in and remember what it's like down here in the summer months living in a van.. Hopefully we'll be back on track soon!

A VAN LIFE NIGHTMARE - IT'S ALL GOING WRONG IN THE UK - (PART 1)
Our van life nightmare continues and you join us in Dover, UK after being stranded here for over a week already... Breaking down is always going to be a van life problem but when your van is 32 years old and its a major breakdown where you need big obsolete parts, it really is tough.
After calling 100's of breakers yards around the country, specialists and following up on lots of leads we've been sent with not much joy, we finally think we may have found a match.. Join us today as we follow this new lead and get a lift to the other side of the country just hoping its the right part.. All is looking good and we pray for the best back at the mechanics but surely it cant be that easy, can it???

After 1 year of traveling, I sold my 26 foot Winnebago Class C RV for a more nimble Class B van on a Promaster 2500 chassis. Now in my 5th year of RVing in my camper van, I'm still loving this RV lifestyle and being a digital nomad. I almost always boondock in nature and really enjoy that off grid living.

This is the END of VAN LIFE | saying goodbye to my tiny home
This is the end of van life. This week I had to pack up everything we might need for the next few months and say goodbye to our beloved tiny home on wheels Beatrice.
Turning off Beatrice's main electrical switch was something I thought I'd never have to do though I know this is not the end of our adventures with her - it's just a break while she gets some TLC. Currently, we are still unsure when she will be ready to hit the road again though we feel confident it won't be that long. We appreciate all the support from everyone.
