In this video, I take you through my 6-day journey in Uzbekistan.
My journey started in the capital city of Tashkent. It wasn't part of the silk road, but visiting the capital gives a stark contrast to the silk road cities
My second stop was a city that felt like stepping into real-life Arabian nights - the silk road city of Khiva.
My third stop was the marvellous Bukhara, an architectural mirror of the past. The historic centre of Bukhara is essentially an open-air museum; ornate with ancient madrasahs and mosques that encapsulate over 2,000 years of history.
My final stop was the silk road city of Samarkand. I heard fables of this city's beauty as a kid and it did not disappoint. Ancient historians called Samarkand the “Rome of the East”, or “The Pearl of the Eastern Muslim World”. The history of Samarkand is 2,750 years old.

Welcome to Central Asia and the Caucasus, two beautiful regions on the crossroads of Asia and Europe. Often overlooked as travel destinations, the countries here provide some of the most rewarding and unique experiences. From stunning mountain landscapes of the Pamir Highway to historic monasteries in Armenia, from spectacular monuments along the ancient Silk Road to the modern skylines of Baku and Astana.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:
We begin this journey in Samarkand, one of the most iconic cities along the ancient Silk Road. Located in Uzbekistan, it’s full of remarkable monuments but also provides a good introduction into daily life, especially in the lively farmers markets and bazaars. After Samarkand, we go to the Caucasus, to visit the fast developing capital city of Azerbaijan, Baku. Visiting the modern shopping malls and vibrant streets gives an interesting contrast with the narrow alleys of the old town here, and the wide promenade facing the Caspian Sea.
The Pamir Highway in Tajikistan is one of the most challenging, but also rewarding, travel destinations in Central Asia. It requires solid preparation, and many tourists decide to hire experienced travelers and guides for their trips. Back in Uzbekistan, the Fergana Valley takes you back in time, with charming villages, and an opportunity to view a traditional silk weaving factory.
Astana, now known as Nur-Sultan, is the modern capital city of Kazakhstan, and sometimes nicknamed as ‘Dubai of the Steppe’. It’s an interesting place to visit, and attracts people from across the country to work, study, and live. Back in the Caucasus, Tbilisi is steeped in history, and full of culture and charisma. The stunning Tsminda Sameba Cathedral is an important place of worship in the Georgia’s Orthodox Christian religion.
In Kyrgyzstan you will find some of the region’s most traditional ways of life, as nomadic shepherd families still move from villages to classic yurts. Traveling across the green pastures is a great way to experience a lifestyle that seems unusual in many societies these days. The capital city of Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, is a peculiar place on the list. Regarded as a secretive dictatorship, Turkmenistan is also one of the most mysterious and closed countries in the world. Keep in mind that people here face severe limitations in their daily lives.
Armenia is a beautiful destination in the Caucasus, and includes the friendly capital Armenia, and several stunning medieval monasteries. We finish this journey in Bukhara, another important stop on the historic Silk Road. There are many mosques and other landmarks to visit, but it’s also just a friendly town where you can eat some delicious food and soak up the relaxed atmosphere.

We traveled the Silk Road of Uzbekistan, heading west to the ancient city of Khiva! After taking an overnight train from Tashkent, we spent the day in Khiva trying local foods, exploring the winding streets of the old town chatting to the locals and dancing with the Uzbek's of the Fergana Valley! To travel to the Silk Road cities of Uzbekistan has been a dream of ours since we can remember! This is just the beginning of our travels across this beautiful country and we can't wait to travel deeper into the history, culture & of course the food of Uzbekistan! ????????

Uzbekistan - Along the Silk Road - Episode 1

This video is the summary of our last adventure in Uzbekistan, a ten days trip along the old silk road, discovering this exciting central Asia Republic. I must say “discovering” at least for me because it was really a surprise day by day, a full immersion in the history, traditions, culture and nature of a country full of wonders.
The journey started from Tashkent but we could not visit the largest city of Uzbekistan due to some flights delay, so effectively the first town of this film is Samarkand, the beautiful residence of emperor Temur.
After Samarkand we crossed the Quizilcum desert, with a brief stop in Nurata, the oasis inside the desert where Alexander the great built a fortress during his conquest campaign towards east Asia. Actually the town is important for a pilgrimage sanctuary just below the ruins.
After a night under the starry sky of Quizilcum in a Yurt Camp and a swim the morning after in the beauty of lake Aydarkul, we arrived in Buchara, the magnificent city over the world famous for its carpets production.
Next step, reached by train, was the ancient Korasmia, once an independent kingdom. The Khan of Korasmia lived in Khiva, the historical town, today UNESCO world heritage. In the alleys of the well preserved fortified citadel, middle age atmospheres are still breathable.
The last part of the journey was inside the Karakalpakstan, an autonomous republic inside Uzbekistan. Our final target was the Aral Sea. The lake, once wide as real sea, actually shrinks progressively due to its drying up. Aral Sea death is probably one of the most well documented disaster caused by human activities, especially those started in Soviet Union era. A part ecologic interest, anyway, all the area around the Aral Sea is still exciting for its primordial landscapes.
During this challenging experience the tour touched Nukus, the main city of Karakalpakstan, Moynaq, once a fishermen village and now 120 kilometres far from the lake front, Myzdakhan, an ancient necropolis still in use, and Urgench where our trip finished.
It was, as I said, a great experience. We discover a country different from our and, moreover, we met its friendly people I’m sure I won’t forget. Almost everywhere we got a warm hospitality, feeling that people were pleased by our presence.
To get the best from a trip like this, it is fundamental to rely on local resources. So we did. We found a higher level of competence I could not imagine. It is mandatory for me to thank some of them here.

Last, but not least, I must thank our drivers, especially Jamol and Kolja. When you travel “on the road”, it is important to trust in good drivers and they were really super.
As I said, this video is a summary of our trip in Uzbekistan, a sort of “trailer” with a quick overview of the journey. Some others will follow asap to describe more in detail the different stages (Samarkand, Buchara, Khiva, Nurata, Aydarkul, Aral sea, etc.). Some technical information. Mostly for filming I used an Olympus OM-D EM5 MKII mirrorless camera and a GoPro Hero 7 black. Some short clips from the car however have been filmed using an I-phone 7. For Color grading, post-production and editing, I used Cyberlink Powerdirector suite 5, as always. Photos, in this film and in the next ones, are mostly by Francesca Sparatore, shot with a Nikon D3100.

After spending a couple of weeks in Kazakhstan, I headed south to Uzbekistan which is historically known as the land of traders and craftsmen.
Overland travel in Central Asia has always been something I’ve been intrigued by, despite the fact that border crossings in this region tend to be unpredictable.
After studying the border crossing map in Central Asia, I decided to enter Uzbekistan via a popular border crossing which connects Shymkent and Tashkent, the capital city of Uzbekistan.

In this Samarkand Uzbekistan Travel vlog, we visited the most majestic monument in Uzbekistan - the Registan Ensemble. It is a truly grand monument with three super sized Madrassahs converging into an open courtyard that looks absolutely stunning. We came here early one morning to experience the Sherdor Madrassah, the Tilakori Madrassah and the Ulughbek Madrassah.

Bukhara is the destination of this edition of Uzbek Life. Euronews' intrepid adventurer Galina Polonskaya took a camel ride around some of the ancient city's sites to get a flavour of its charms. e.
Bukhara is more than 2,500 years old. In the Silk Road days long caravans came here from all over the known world, the legends of the magic oasis hidden between two deserts spread from India to China, and nowadays Bukhara can still win the heart of the most seasoned traveller. Galina said, gripping tightly to the reins.
Bukhara is a city of wonders, and its merchants are enchanting. They welcome guests in exactly the same place that their forefathers did -- under the ancient trading domes and in the surrounding streets. They have inherited the gift of a an outstanding capacity for foreign languages.
You can still sense Bukhara's atmosphere and its colours, when this ancient city was a big trading centre on the Silk Road, said tour guide Mubashira Bahshilova. Even today under those domes they still sell what was brought here hundreds of years ago, as well as the typical locally handmade goods.
The Kalyan minaret is one of Bukhara's most iconic symbols. For a long time it was the highest in Central Asia. It was also a lighthouse and at night torches would burn, lighting the way for caravans approaching the town.
Bukhara's historic centre is on UNESCO's World Heritage List. One highlight is the mausoleum of the Samanid dynasty, built in the 10th century. It changes colour with the weather. Experts say the secret is in the special brickwork.
Mubashira Bahshilova explains: The architect who created this mausoleum had 18 ways of laying the bricks. If you take a close look you'll see each surface has 10 windows. Every window has its own decoration. So the windows on each front are different.
The great polymath Avicenne was born in a village close to Bukhara, when it was still the capital of the Samanids. The author of The Canon of Medicine often came to the Emir's residence, the Ark fortress, which has been destroyed and rebuilt repeatedly throughout history.
Galina Polonskaya says: When Avicenne was 17 years old he healed an emir who was thought to be dying. The doctor didn't want to be rewarded with gold. Instead, he asked for permanent access to the fortress's library and its treasures.
According to legend Avicenne created some of the best local recipes, and that is another enticing aspect of local hospitality. In the Silk Road times more than 60 caravan hotels existed Bukhara, each catering for different languages.
Bukhara resident Doston Rajabov says visitors can expect the warmest of welcomes: A guest is like our father, like it was in ancient times and will always be. We receive guests as we would our own father.
Guests who come to Bukhara from all over the world can feel the rhythms of the past. Centuries ago foreign dancers would come here with the caravans to perform. The costumes haven't changed much. Some dresses are a work of art, dating back to the 2nd century BC.
Bakshillo Djumaev is from a dynasty of master embroiderers. His threads consist of silk and real gold. It can take up to six months to make the traditional gown. The creativity comes from the past, present and the future of Bukhara.
Before I was inspired by my children, now I'm inspired by my grandchildren. And the city inspires me a lot, Djumaev says.
This is the mausoleum of the famous sufi Naqshband, who was an artisan himself and said the hand should be filled with work, and the heart with God. Today Bukhara artisans repeat this phrase and consider Naqshbandi as their patron.
Ustoshokir Kamalov is a 7th generation blacksmith. He knows all the secrets of forging the reputedly everlasting Bukhara knifes - a knowledge he got from his father and passed on to his son. Ustoshokir hopes the heart of his ancient smithy will beat forever: There is music in the work of a blacksmith. It's the music of a heartbeat. Tuk tuk, tuk tuk.

The silk road - Bicycle Touring in Uzbekistan - The ONION Adventure
We were leaving Tajikistan on a high note by visiting the seven lakes and diving head first into the amazing ancient cities of Uzbekistan. Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva were great highlights before we took the train to Kazakhstan and the ferry to Azerbaijan from there.

Travelling the Silk Road in Uzbekistan
In June 2018 I took myself off to Uzbekistan which, as it turns out, is one of the best places I've ever been!
I travelled with G Adventures and visited Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva.
