Easy and Cheap Awning Setup On a 4Runner

I wanted an awning for my SUV but didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars on it. Here is the guide to my setup. My car is a Toyota 4Runner but this should work on pretty much every car unless you have a matte finish or something similar.

If you buy the suction cups be SURE to remove the plastic protective film from the suction surface! Lots of reviewers seemed to not have done it and it just won't perform that way.

Cost of all items:
Telescoping Poles - $45.99
Brown/Silver Tarp from Home Depot 6x8 - $7.98
Pair of suction cups - $14.38
Total: $68.35

Cheap Overlanding Awning

Need an awning your vehicle? Don't want to spend the money to buy a vehicle awning from a company like ARB? Well in this video I show you how we put up shade and shelter off the side of our vehicle for only $50. The premade vehicle awnings are very nice and this is not a video to knock them down. This video is just to give people some options who can't yet afford an awning or maybe don't want to buy one. #overland #cheap #adventureisnecessary

Truck Camping: Setting Up Your Truck Rain Tarp Using a Hiking Pole Instead of Trees

If you don't have any trees to attach your tarp, you can always use a hiking pole. Here's a video showing how to set up a tarp off the back of your topper using a hiking pole.

Outwell Camper Fallcrest Awning Sides and Hillcrest Tarp UNPACK and REVIEW!

We've finally managed to get our hands on these two accessories for our campervan, giving greater wind and rain protection when using our roll out side awning.

As you will see in the videos they can be setup quickly and easily and provide great privacy and protection.

The kador strip sizes are 5mm and 7mm on the Tarp and this can also be used on the other side of the van, slotting straight in to a standard VW California rail too, using both together - see this video here:

The two products can be seen here on the Outwell website;

DIY Tarp Camping Canopy

I was about to purchase a couple hundred dollar canopy for an upcoming camping trip when I thought to myself, as i often do, why not make it. And then bam there it is. I spent $60 on the brown heavy duty 16 x 20 tarp at home depot. The 10 2x2 cedar poles were $7 each. I made the guy line out of cheap rope $12 50ft x 3 and a small wood block with 2 holes for adding tension. So just around $165. The benefits are this canopy will seat around 15 people in camp chairs. It is also modular in that you can cut poles to different lengths and move them back and forth among the many eyelets.

DIY Small Camper Awning Ep045

The test of an idea I've been working on all winter, our hopefully new awning. A DIY awning that's under $100. We'll put it to the test and hopefully it will be a lasting addition to Scampy.

Awning - for some reason this link keeps breaking, but we got it from Ventura Roof Tents, so if you just google them they will come up, type in 'Ventura roof top tents awning' and you will find it (they're also very helpful on the phone if you have questions)

After our winter van life trip came to an abrupt end and we find ourselves back in the UK, and that can only mean one thing.. van upgrade time!
With the ever hotter summer looming, we knew that travelling with a dog and a cat we would need shade, so we added an awning. We wanted an awning that was cheap, and simple to install. This sun canopy is probably the easiest install there is, in this video we show that, as well as how to set it up and its pros and cons.
We also decided to upgrade our van security, after a dodgy night wild camping in France where people were around our van in the middle of the night, we wanted to add some cctv cameras so we can see from inside the van, who, or what, may be lurking outside. This camera system looked perfect as we didn't have to do any additional wiring and anyone can fit it in about 20 minutes!

Decathlon tarp on our roof rails using a C Section awning rail

We struggled to find a way to fit the tarp onto our van that was secure and didn't involve extra fitting that took an age to setup. We wanted something quick, easy, didn't cost a lot and didn't need lots of extra parts. We settled on attaching a pre-painted C Section rail onto the underside of our roof rails using self tapping screws. This looks discrete and takes us 2 mins to erect the tarp after pulling up. Simply attach the carabiner, put the poles into the tarp and secure using the guy lines. PERFECT!
