Ushuaia Argentina | Top things to do | 2023

Ushuaia is the southernmost spot of Argentina and is known as the city at the end of the world or El Fin del Mundo, thanks to its location. Ushuaia is also recognized as the official capital of Tierra del Fuego (Land of Fire) and the official gateway to Antarctica expeditions.

Ushuaia sits alongside El Chalten and Perito Moreno Glacier as some of the top destinations in Argentina's Patagonia.

Many will be able to visit Ushuaia before or after a cruise to Antarctica. I just disembarked an Antarctica expedition cruise and decided to spend a few days checking out Ushuaia and the surrounding outdoor paradise. Whether planning for a brief visit or a few days, there are so many things to do in Ushuaia, and some advance planning is needed, especially when you have only a few hours or days to do it.

In this video, I will share my top things to see and do when in Ushuaia, hoping to uplift your upcoming visit to this part of the world. Let's get this video started.

Top Things To Do In Ushuaia

If you're travelling to Antarctica, make some time pre or post-trip to explore the region around Ushuaia. It may just surprise you...

Train Journey to the END OF THE WORLD! Tierra Del Fuego National Park, Ushuaia

Train Journey to the END OF THE WORLD! Tierra Del Fuego National Park, Ushuaia

In this video we take the famous train journey to the end of the world (otherwise known as: Tierra Del Fin Del Mundo) into Tierra Del Fuego National Park in Ushuaia, the Southernmost city in the world!

The Southern Fuegian Railway is known as the End of the World train for being the Southernmost railway on Earth. The train journey to the end of the world leaves the beautiful station which feels like stepping back in time from the moment you arrive and buy your ticket from the office.

Climbing inside the vintage (and tiny) carriages was an experience in itself as we passed by other steam trains whilst hearing the narration of the prisoners that used to embark on the same train journey everyday. The scenery in Tierra Del Fuego National Park can be seen from the comfort of the slow and steady train which takes around an hour to arrive at the stop. Although we found it touristy we would definitely recommend doing it if you’re visiting Ushuaia as it is a unique experience. After getting off the train we decided to avoid the overpriced taxis and walk the 20 minutes down to the bay where we had lunch before going inside the End of the world post office. That’s right, there really is a tiny post office at the end of the world, also an experience with in itself. The friendly owner is a man who has been running the post office for over 30 years and as well as postcards and the usual post office things, if you bring your passport with you it’s possible to get an official “End of the World’ stamp inside complete with penguins!

The hiking inside the National park was so beautiful that we decided we had to come back another day to explore more, we loved the train experience but if it’s the hiking you’re interested in then it’s possible to take a bus from Ushuaia town that gets you into the park much quicker, it’s obviously not as scenic and much less of an experience than the train but for us it meant we had the whole day to hike through Tierra Del Fuego and after 12km of hiking we were picked up by the same bus and brought back to Ushuaia.

Ushuaia and the Beagle Channel, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina [Amazing Places 4K]

Ushuaia is located at the southernmost tip of Argentina, in a stunning wild and remote landscape, between the Beagle Channel to the south and mountains to the north. Ushuaia is arguably the southernmost city in the world (the smaller Chilean town of Puerto Williams is a bit further to the south). Many Antarctic cruises depart from Ushuaia.
The Beagle Channel separates the main island of Tierra del Fuego to the north from smaller islands to the south. It is one of three navigable routes between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans at the southern end of South America.

Beagle Channel, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, South America

Beagle Channel is a strait in the archipelago island chain of Tierra del Fuego on the extreme southern tip of South America partly in Chile and partly in Argentina. The channel separates the larger main island of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego from various smaller islands including the islands of Picton, Lennox and Nueva; Navarino; Hoste; Londonderry; and Stewart. The channel's eastern area forms part of the border between Chile and Argentina and the western area is entirely within Chile. The Beagle Channel, the Straits of Magellan to the north, and the open ocean Drake Passage to the south are the three navigable passages around South America between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The Beagle Channel and the Straits of Magellan are both very narrow passages which severely limit the size and types of ships that can safely use them, hence, most commercial shipping is done through the Drake Passage. The Beagle Channel is about 240 kilometres (130 nmi; 150 mi) long and is about 5 kilometres (3 nmi; 3 mi) wide at its narrowest point. It extends from Nueva Island in the east to Darwin Sound and Cook Bay in the west. Some 50 kilometres (27 nmi; 31 mi) from its western end it divides into two branches, north and south of Gordon Island. The southwest branch, between Hoste Island and Gordon Island, enters Cook Bay, a bay of the Pacific Ocean. The northwest branch, between Gordon Island and Isla Grande, enters Darwin Sound, which connects to the Pacific Ocean by the O'Brien Channel and the Ballenero Channel. The biggest settlement on the channel is Ushuaia in Argentina followed by Puerto Williams in Chile, two of the southernmost settlements of the world. Although it is navigable by large ships, there are safer waters to the south (Drake Passage) and to the north (Strait of Magellan). Under the Treaty of Peace and Friendship of 1984 between Chile and Argentina, ships of other nations navigate with a Chilean pilot between the Strait of Magellan and Ushuaia through the Magdalena Channel and the Cockburn Channel to the Pacific Ocean, then by the Ballenero Channel, the O'Brien Channel and the northwest branch of the Beagle Channel. The Beagle Channel develops between several islands; to the north lies Argentine-Chilean Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, to the south Hoste, Navarino, and Picton and Nueva, which were claimed by Argentina until 1984. The latter two lie at the bi-national eastern entrance to the channel while the western entrance is wholly inside Chile. The western entrance of Beagle Channel is divided by Gordon Island into two channels. Some minor islands exist inside the channel among them Snipe Islet and Gable Island. Except for eastern Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego and Gable Island all islands mentioned here belong to Chile. The Yaghan peoples settled the islands along the Murray Channel approximately 10,000 years before present. There are notable archaeological sites indicating such early Yaghan settlement at locations such as Bahia Wulaia on Isla Navarino, site of the Bahia Wulaia Dome Middens. The channel was named after the ship HMS Beagle during its first hydrographic survey of the coasts of the southern part of South America which lasted from 1826 to 1830. During that expedition, under the overall command of the Australian Commander Phillip Parker King, the Beagle's captain Pringle Stokes committed suicide and was replaced by captain Robert FitzRoy. The ship continued the survey in the second voyage of the Beagle under the command of captain FitzRoy who took Charles Darwin along as a self-funding supernumerary, giving him opportunities as an amateur naturalist. Darwin had his first sight of glaciers when they reached the channel on 29 January 1833, and wrote in his field notebook It is scarcely possible to imagine anything more beautiful than the beryl-like blue of these glaciers, and especially as contrasted with the dead white of the upper expanse of snow. Several small islands (Picton, Lennox and Nueva) up to the Cape Horn were the subject of the long-running Beagle conflict between Chile and Argentina; by the terms of a Treaty of Peace and Friendship of 1984 between Chile and Argentina they are now part of Chile. From the 1950s to 1970s several incidents involving the Chilean and Argentine Navy occurred in the waters of the Beagle Channel, for example the 1958 Snipe incident, the 1967 Cruz del Sur incident and the shelling of Quidora the same year. See List of incidents during the Beagle conflict.

Winter in Ushuaia

To the south, Tierra del Fuego, the Land of Fire in English, and the capital of that Province, Ushuaia are an open gate to the immense and mysterious solitude of the Antarctica. Ushuaia, a destination that once was a wild and remote place, today attracts thousands of people from all over the world who seek to be dazzled by breathtaking landscapes. This touristic city in essence, does not distinguish seasons. Adventure, excitement, history and legends come together in this island along the year.
