Discover the Cloud Forest

Costa Rica has dense forests scattered across much of the country. In this video, we explore the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve with naturalist guide Francisco Castro. Along the way, we'll learn about the various interactions among species in the cloud forest.

Strangler figs are a type of tropical tree that germinate in the canopy of other trees. As they mature, they send roots downward that eventually envelop and kill the host tree. In doing so, stranger figs may become columnar trees with a hollow core. This hollow core -- formerly occupied by the host tree -- becomes habitat for a range of other animals, including skunks, raccoons, porcupines, and opossums. Strangler figs can live to be 300 years old and hold over 200 species of plants.

Many of the plants living on a strangler fig are epiphytes -- plants that grow on other plants. As Francisco explains, these plants use trees to reach sunlight, which tends to be scarce in cloud forests. They derive nutrients from moisture, wind, fog, and air. In fact, says Francisco, the name epiphyte means air plant.

This video was shot in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. This reserve is located in the Central Highlands of Costa Rica at approximately 5,000 feet (1,524 m) above sea level. The air up here is crisp and clean and the biodiversity is incredible. More than 400 species of birds, 100 species of mammals, and 1,200 species of amphibians and reptiles live here. Travelers can explore the cloud forest on one of the many trails that wind through the reserve. There are also suspension bridges and zip-lines available.

Climbing the Strangler Fig in Monteverde

Join me as I explore Costa Rica.

This is a short video I took while climbing the most famous strangler fig in Monteverde, Costa Rica. It's perfect for climbing all the way up and you have a nice view of Santa Elena from up there :) The strangler fig is kind of hard to find, you follow a street up a hill and then when the street turns, just go straight into the woods lol. Lots of tour guides take people to climb it, but you can find it by yourself as well :)

Competition for light is intense in rainforest areas resulting in tall, straight stemmed trees that have few branches until they reach the upper canopy where their branches spread and help to form the dense canopy that shades the lower levels.

One of the largest Moreton Bay Figs (Ficus macrophylla) in the World found in Valencia, Spain

This Moreton Bay Fig (Ficus macrophylla) found in the Garden of Parterre, Valencia, Spain is one of the largest of its kind in the World. It has girt of over 20m at the base and 13m at 1.3m height and its circumference increases with 48cm per year. Its height is 22.5m and it covers over 1000sqm. It was planted in 1838 or 1852, which means it is between 166 and 180 years old.

The info is from these two sites:

This is one truly monumental tree and one of the must to see things in Valencia. One of the interesting facts about it is that is a strangler fig, which means it grows around host tree and when it's big enough kills it by strangling. But for me the most impressive is however the growth rate, for most of the European trees if its even possible to approach such a size it will take thousands of years and not merely ~170, which is telling me that if I want garden with big tree fast I'll have to plant one of these.

Have you seen the Monster Tree at Cairns? Curtain fig tree - Atherton Tablelands

Curtain Fig Tree is a stunning attaction at Atherton Tablelands because you wouldn’t have seen a tree like this. It’s 500 years old and is massive!

The history behind this tree is such that the seed germinated on a host tree and slowly grew in this curtain-form and strangled the host tree. It also fell on a neighbouring tree and strangled that too resulting in the shape of this Curtain Fig.

Nature is wonderful isn’t it?

Watch more about this and every place in Atherton Tablelands in my new YouTube vlog. Link in bio!

Day Eight // The Biggest Tree on Earth

The largest tree in the world is a giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) in California's Sequoia National Park. Called General Sherman, the tree is about 52,500 cubic feet (1,487 cubic meters) in volume

We saw this tree today and it really was incredible. Definitely the biggest tree I've ever seen... Well duh, because there aren't any that are bigger..... Ok I'm done arguing with myself. Enjoy the video.
