Goree island.
The island of Gorée lies off the coast of Senegal, opposite Dakar. From the 15th to the 19th century, it was the largest slave-trading centre on the African coast. Ruled in succession by the Portuguese, Dutch, English and French, its architecture is characterized by the contrast between the grim slave-quarters and the elegant houses of the slave traders. Today it continues to serve as a reminder of human exploitation and as a sanctuary for reconciliation.
Ile Gorée is an oasis of calm – no cars, no crime, just pastel-coloured houses and narrow cobbled streets – making it top of Senegal’s tourist site.

Goree Island just off the coast from Dakar Senegal. The island is known as The Slave Island. In the 17th and 18th century it was used as a trans-shipment point for sending slaves to the Americas.
The island is a peaceful place with narrow streets, and no cars or bicycles, but lots of bougainvillea and flowers.
Sand painting is quite an art form.
On top of the island is a massive gun - probably put there by the French and a left over from World War 2

Île de Gorée is an island located 2 kilometres at sea from the main harbour of Dakar, famous as a destination for people interested in the Atlantic slave trade although its actual role in the history of the slave trade is the subject of dispute.
It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The name is a corruption of its original Dutch name Goedereede, meaning “good roadstead”.

After crossing into Senegal we visited the vibrant fishing town Saint-Louis and famous Zebra Bar, which is a campsite most overland travelers visit when traveling west africa. On the way to Dakar we realized, that the clutch of my travel partner we repaired in Mauretania was still broken – so we prepared for a long stay in Senegals capital Dakar to send clutch discs from Europe.
Meanwhile we went on a burocratic journey through town to stamp our carnet de passage (customs document), apply for visas and explore the highlights of Dakar.

2. Eat at famous restaurant Lagon Nr. 1
3. Go surf at Dakar's beaches

Aujourd'hui découverte de l'ile de Gorée située à 22 km environ de Dakar, une ile chargée d'histoire et tristement célèbre pour avoir été du XVe au XIXe siècle le plus grand centre de commerce d'esclaves de la côte africaine. Nos toca despedirnos de Diannah, de Samba, de María, de Dame y de toda la familia de @Dialamkoto y Diannah para poner rumbo a Ziguinchor. Nos procuramos dos septplace (transporte comunal de 7 plazas) y fuimos a visitar la capital de Casamance. Esta urbe, como muchas otras, puede parecer agobiante en ciertas partes, pero a la vez guarda detalles hermosos que merece la pena conocer. Situada al borde del río Casamance, esta ciudad todavía atesora numerosas construcciones coloniales y sirve de punto de encuentro a miles de comerciantes de toda la región que vienen aquí a vender sus productos.
Una vez más, las personas nos ofrecen una puerta de entrada a una mirada más humana del lugar que visitamos. Tina es una mujer que construyó un hospedaje sobre su casa y que nos ha servido en BWBP multitud de veces como hogar al llegar a Ziguinchor. Aunque esta vez no pudimos quedarnos en Chez Tina, por cuestión logística del gran grupo de personas que éramos, nos dejó subir a ver el atardecer desde su terraza, siendo este anaranjado y rosáceo ocaso uno de los más bellos que hemos visto en este país.
Durante 12 días, desde el 3 hasta el 14 de agosto, haremos cerca de 1.000 kilómetros de ruta en uno de los recorridos y experiencias más espectaculares que ofrece el oeste africano. Este no sería un viaje Be Wild sin aunar los tres conceptos que los definen: aventura, aprendizaje y responsabilidad.

Dakar is build on a peninsule. The monument is build on the point of it. You can see the islands Ngor (Promise), Gore (Where slave trade traces are to be found) and the island of the serpents...
This story of the island of the serpents make me think of David Yke and his shape shifter BS. Off the record I was told more then what you hear in the video about odd things and rituals held there by French and Englishmen in colonial days.
