NEW ZEALAND'S FAR NORTH: CAPE REINGA, NINETY MILE BEACH, GIANT SAND DUNES
We are continuing our New Zealand road trip around the Northland region. In this travel vlog, we are exploring the Far North and driving all the way up to the northernmost point of New Zealand's North Island - Cape Reinga. You can also other beautiful destinations in this travel video including Te Paki Sand Dunes and Ninety Mile Beach. Many kiwis and tourists love spending their holidays exploring Northland because its nature is absolutely spectacular.
If you're doing a road trip and drive around Northland, we recommend getting to Cape Reinga as early as possible to beat the traffic and crowds. Tourist buses arrive closer to lunchtime and it's way harder to enjoy Cape Reinga Lighthouse and surrounding tracks when it's full of people. Also, bring your food with you as there is no place to buy lunch or coffee. It's not only true for Cape Reinga but for the whole Far North District, food and fuel are very limited here, so plan strategically.
On our way back from Cape Reinga, we decided to visit another amazing tourist attraction - Te Paki Giant Sand Dunes. This is not only a beautiful destination for taking pictures and admiring views. This is a very unique spot to try sand boarding, right from giant dunes. There is a lot of people here even outside of the peak season, but there is enough space for everyone. You can bring your own sand board (you can buy it in Kmart or Warehouse in any big city) or rent it right at the car park. You can also enjoy your walk around Te Paki Sand Dunes - it's totally free.
Another amazing and truly unique place to visit in Northland is Ninety Mile Beach. This is not only a spectacular beach with stunning views (definitely one of the miracles of New Zealand nature), it's also a highway. Yes, that's correct, if you have a suitable vehicle, you can officially drive on 90 Mile Beach. Obviously, you would want to have a 4x4 car, SUV or UTE which is also high enough to cope with sand. We were using BMW X3 xDrive and it was good as. Also, check your insurance policy (especially if you're renting a car) as many companies don't cover any damage and don't provide any assistance on the Ninety Mile Beach.

The Far North of New Zealand with Amazing Attractions Cape Reinga Lighthouse and 90 Mile Beach
The best things to do in the Far North of New Zealand is to experience Cape Reinga and 90 Mile Beach. With excellent surfing and surf casting, horse riding activities and blokarts, quad biking and paddle boarding, fishing activities, Gumdigging history and bodyboarding down the sand dunes.
The northern most tip of New Zealand features many stunning attractions with the famous 90 Mile Beach, the legendary Cape Reinga - where the Pacific Ocean meets the Tasman Sea and is home to a giant swamp of Kauri trees thousands of years old. The whole region is lined with beautiful unspoiled white sandy beaches perfect to swim, snorkel and gather shellfish. Being so unspoilt, the Far North has some of the best fishing and diving waters in the world. Guided tours depart from Paihia (Bay of Islands) and Kaitaia in the Far North daily and travel the popular 90 Mile Beach as well as the road north bringing the fascinating gumdigging, Maori and early European history to life. Beach activities range from surfing, surfcasting and swimming to bodyboarding down the sand dunes. Other points of interest are the views down to Cape Maria Van Diemen and the beautiful beach at stunning Tapotupotu Bay, a sandy beach that is nestled on the eastern side of Cape Reinga. For the tramper there are numerous walks from short or multi day walks staying at Department of Conservation camp sites.

Today is our longest day tour in New Zealand so far, bussing it from Paihia to Cape Reinga! We join Fullers Great Sights for a bus tour to Ninety Mile Beach in the Far North of New Zealand. Stops along the way include the Puketi Forest, Doubtless Bay and other stops in the Northland region of New Zealand. After seeing the Cape Reinga Lighthouse, we do some sand boarding at Te Paki Stream, otherwise known as sand surfing on Ninety Mile Beach.

Te Paki Giant Sand Dunes in Cape Reinga & Ninety Mile Beach | Northland Travel Guide | Traveller
A large chunk of the land around Cape Reinga is part of the Te Paki Recreation Reserves managed by DOC. It’s public land with free access; leave the gates as you found them and don’t disturb the animals. There are 7 sq km of giant sand dunes on either side of the mouth of Te Paki Stream. For those wishing to clamber up and toboggan back down, you can rent sandboards ($15) from local outfits signposted en route or from a caravan at the car park (during summer only).

Cape Reinga and the 90 Mile Beach
I figured I should start my travels of New Zealand from the top. I spent 4 days in Paihia. During this time I took a tour to as far north as possible in New Zealand - Cape Reinga and 90 Mile Beach.
Paihia was a great little town in the Far North. I was tempted to stay longer in Bay of Islands.

Kaitaia is the northern most town in New Zealand and the last major stop before heading to the ‘top’ of new Zealand and is a good base from which to enjoy the many activities and attractions there is on offer, from the nearby Karikari Peninsula with its white sandy beaches, the Karikari Estate Winery and the well known Carrington Golf course.
Dune Rider-2To the west of Kaitaia is the coastal village of Ahipara, here you can enjoy golf, sandsurfing, 4WD treks, quad bike riding, Blokarting, fishing from the beach, surfing and diving.
Although named Ninety Mile Beach it is actually only 64 miles long stretching from Ahipara the small coastal village near Kaitaia to almost the top of the North Island.
The best way to appreciate this part of the Far North to Cape Reinga is to travel by plane from the Bay of Islands or with local bus tour operators that offer daily trips departing from The Bay of Islands or Kaitaia. You will learn the history and legends of the region including various points of interest and enjoy a drive along the magnificent sometimes wild west coast of Ninety Mile Beach.
Leaving the Ninety Mile Beach at Te Paki quick sand stream it’s time to try Sand boarding on the giant sand dunes of Te Paki before heading for Cape Reinga, which although it is not quite the furthest northern point of New Zealand its where the road journey ends. Twelve degrees below the Tropic of Capricorn, Cape Reinga thrusts its head north to bask in subtropical sunlight.
Here, under the wind-whipped Cape Reinga lighthouse, the Tasman and Pacific oceans meet, colliding in a fit of fury and spitting salty spray high as they battle for dominance.
Maori believe that at Cape Reinga, “the place of the leaping”, the spirits of the departed leap from an 800-year-old pohutukawa tree on the windswept cape to begin the voyage back to their final resting place in the ancestral homeland of Hawaiki.
Other points of interest are the views down To Cape Maria Van Diemen, and the beautiful beach at stunning Tapotupotu Bay, a sandy beach that is nestled on the eastern side of Cape Reinga. For the tramper there are numerous walks from short or multi day walks staying at Department of Conservation camp sites.

The Journey to the North - Cape Reinga and Ninety Mile Beach
Leaving Pihua at the Bay Of Islands we head North. We first stopped at the forest, before making our way up to the Cape. We passed through several small towns, before arriving at the Cape Reinga. New Zealand most Northerly point and where the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean meet. The view was amazing and was a great place to start the journey through New Zealand.
Next stop was the Sand Dunes at Stream, where we did sand boarding, racing down the dunes, having to much fun. Finally we drove down the famous 90 mile beach, which in face is only 55 miles. Great day, great views and great fun!
