Road to the Door of Hell - Turkmenistan
This experience is part of my big trip around the world. Ever since my friend Hugh told me about this place, I knew I needed to visit.
After drilling for oil, the camp and rig collapsed into this wide crater. The soviet engineers though it was best to burn the gas off... That was 45 years ago and it has been burning ever since.
Riding through the desert for a days on end, through Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, and finding this giant barbecue was one of the most unique experiences so far.
If you have the chance to visit, do it quick, before somebody kills the fire.

The Door to Hell | Derweze, Turkmenistan
Derweze — The word Derweze translate in Turkmen means gate, is a village in Turkmenistan of about 350 inhabitants, located in the middle of the Karakum Desert, about 260 km north from Ashgabat and 90 km from the village Erbent. The diameter of 70 meters and a depth of 20 meters. The Derweze gas well, and the story of its discovery is quite interesting, In 1971, a team of Soviet scientists was drilling at the site when their rig collapsed into a cavernous pocket of natural gas. Concerned that the hole would release poisonous methane gases, the geologists set it on fire, expecting the fuel would burn out in a few days. Since 1971, the natural gas coming from the crater, but the gas is still burning today. Locals have dubbed the cavern The Door to Hell.
That was more than four decades ago, and the crater is still burning. Its glow is visible from Derweze each night. Fittingly, the name Derweze means gate in the Turkmen language, so locals have dubbed the burning crater the Gate to Hell. Although it is a slow-burning ecological disaster, the crater has also become one of Turkmenistan's few tourist attractions, drawing adventurous souls out into the Karakum, where summer temperatures can hit 50ºC (122ºF) without any help from the Derweze fire.
Despite the Derweze Door to Hell's potential as a tourist site, Turkmen President Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov issued orders for local officials to find a way to put out the fire, after his 2010 visit to the crater. The president expressed fears that the fire would draw off gas from other nearby drilling sites, damaging Turkmenistan's vital energy exports. The country exports natural gas to Europe, Russia, China, India, and Pakistan. Turkmenistan produced 1.6 trillion cubic feet of natural gas in 2010; its Ministry of Oil, Gas, and Mineral Resources published a goal of reaching 8.1 trillion cubic feet by 2030. Impressive though it looks, the Gates of Hell at Derweze seems unlikely to make much of a dent in those sorts of numbers.

The Door To Hell in Turkmenistan is one of the top 10 secret natural world wonders. In the middle of the Karakum Desert, the small village of Darwaza is home to less than 350 people. It's also the home of one of the most magnificent and incredible lesser-known wonders of the world, the Door to Hell. The creation of this particular spot wasn't natural at all but its amazing and inexplicable composition is. In 1971, Soviet geologists accidentally discovered a cave filled with natural gas when the ground beneath their oil rig collapsed, uncovering it. In order to protect the locals and prevent intoxication from poisonous gas, the geologists decided it best to light the gas on fire and burn it away. That large crater, 70 metres in diameter, has been burning ever since.

In 1971 a Soviet rig was drilling in Derweze, Turkmenistan when the geologists tapped into a cavern filled with natural gas. Before they could further drill, they needed to clear the cavern. The next logical step was to burn off the gas.
The experts thought the fire would burn for a few days max, but the fire has been BURNING FOR OVER 40 YEARS!
The locals call the 230-foot diameter holeThe Door to Hell. If you visit the site, you see locals throwing cigarettes to create spectacular bursts of flames.
No one has any idea how much gas is left to burn off, but it appears that there is no shortage!
Derweze 'The Door to Hell'
While drilling in 1971, Soviet geologists tapped into a cavern filled with natural gas.The ground beneath the drilling rig collapsed, leaving a large hole with a diameter of 70 meters (230 ft). To avoid poisonous gas discharge, it was decided the best solution was burn it off. Geologists had hoped the fire would use all the fuel in a matter of days, but the gas is still burning today.
