Testing Belgian Foods (Bruges, Belgium Food Tour) | Eileen Aldis Travel Channel

Belgian food. When you think of Belgium I’m guessing that visions of Belgian chocolate, Belgian fries, Belgian waffles and Belgian beer come to your mind - let the Belgian food tour begin! We set out in Bruges to eat ALL THE THINGS in one glorious day. We started out with a tip from our Airbnb host on where to find the best chocolate. There are over a hundred places to get chocolate in Bruges and, as she said, “Not all of them are good.” Enough said. We headed to BbyB which was started by Michelin chef, Bart Desmidt, and master chocolatier, Jan Verleye. Unfortunately it was closed with a big sign that pointed us to a CHOCOLATE FESTIVAL they were attending this day. Did we just stumble across a Belgian chocolate festival? Yes - praise be - we did. We heard about the science and concept of these designer chocolates and finally got to taste. It was a real experience and we’ve honestly never tried anything like it. The chocolate itself disappears quickly but the flavour releases slowly through your mouth and hits your taste buds long after. It was an amazing way to start this Belgian food tour. Next up? Belgian fries! We left the tourist area and went to a quiet place we’d already found in which we were the only non-locals. We ordered fries with mayonnaise (very traditional), ketchup, and a stew sauce that tastes like a Sunday roast in a dipping sauce. After that salty hit it was time to go back to sweet: enter Belgian waffles. I didn’t realize there are two types of Belgian waffles (from Brussels and Liège). We had the Liège waffles which are smaller and made with sugar. As the waffles cook the sugar caramelizes which makes this lovely crunch on the outside but it stays soft on the inside. Our waffle was piled high with whip cream, chocolate sauce, strawberries, and icing sugar. Perfection. Completely full, our last stop of the day was Belgian beer. We went to Cafe Vlissinghe - the oldest pub in town. It’s been in business since 1515 and has a coziness inside that you simply cannot manufacture. I don’t actually like beer but since we were in Belgium at a 500+ year old pub I figured I should give it a shot. The server recommended a cherry flavoured beer that, she said, didn’t really taste like beer. Right up my alley. She was right and I really enjoyed it. Marc had the ‘house’ beer and finished it happily as well. It was a great way to end the night after a whole day of two hungry Canadians trying Belgian food. If you’re in Belgium I’d definitely recommend these Belgian foods to try! Nothing disappointed, even with our high expectations, and you cannot ask for more. I hope you enjoyed this video! What was your favourite Belgian food we showed?

BRUGES, BELGIUM | 5 Things You SHOULD do in Bruges!

Bruges is one of the most beautiful cities in Belgium! In this video, we highlight 5 things that you should do in Bruges. We hope that this information will help you plan your own weekend or day getaway to Bruges.

The 5 best things in Bruges, Belgium include:

5. The fifth best thing to do in Bruges is to try the local delicacies. Belgium in general is known for its delicious cuisine, such as vol-au-vent, fries, waffles, high-quality beers, and chocolate. In Bruges you can find cozy bars and restaurants in almost every street.

4. In addition to trying the local cuisine it is also important to learn about it! Bruges has various museums that tell the story behind the Belgian delicacies, such as the Bruges Beer Museum, the Frietmuseum and the Choco-story or chocolate museum.

3. On number 3 we have a boat tour on the canals. The best way to see the medieval Bruges is by cruising its waterways by boat. The canals weave their way through the historic centre of Bruges and thus it’s the perfect way to see the beautiful architecture.

☑️ View/book the tour here:

2. The second best thing to do in Bruges is to visit the Historium. The Historium takes you back in time so you experience the liveliness of Bruges during the Golden Age. You can choose between two different experiences: the Virtual Reality tour or the Historium Story. Get your historium all-in ticket here:

1. The best thing to do in Bruges is to just walk around the city! This fairy-tale medieval town is one of Europe’s best preserved cities and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. When walking around you will find picturesque cobbled roads, dreamy canals, and beautiful market squares. There are also many historical churches, towers and medieval houses. MOST CHARMING CITY IN EUROPE? (BRUGES, BELGIUM TOUR) | Eileen Aldis

Bruges, Belgium might just be the most charming city in Europe. If you closed your eyes and imagined a picturesque, fairytale, travel-back-in-time, absolutely breath-taking European city I'd guess that Bruges is pretty close to what's in your head. It's what European vacation dreams are made of. A veritable time capsule of medieval architecture, It's easy to understand why it's a UNESCO World Heritage City. It is rare to see so many streets of buildings all so well preserved. Walking around is like being transported back in time and history here is on another level. This town hall? It was the seat of government for more than six hundred years. This old hospital? It's been a hospital since the 1100s (and only stopped in the 1970s). The reason why Bruges is so well preserved has a twist: the city was too poor to renovate and rebuild. Bruges has experienced periods of great wealth, great poverty, and great wealth. During the down times, citizens didn't have the cash to make 'improvements' to their houses and to this scarcity we owe a great deal! Ironically, the current citizens of Bruges benefit from their forebears' inability to knock things down and rebuild. Bruges is now a huge draw for tourists from around the world who flock to see the same buildings people were too poor to change. Huzzah! This is why I love history!

Our day in Bruges started at the Folklore Museum. It's only 4 Euro and you can get a nice overview of life in the city in the 19th and 20th centuries. Don't forget to look for the black cat who lives there. He's rare to see and is one of a long line of black cats who call the museum home. We then walked (you can walk everywhere) to the Burg Square where you'll find the Stadhuis (town hall) and a little further on is the Grote Markt. The latter is the main square where you'll find see the Belfry (Belfort) and dozens of tourists. Bruges is known for two things: an abundance of beauty and an abundance of tourists seeking it. But no one cares because you're so stunned at the charming city around you. We walked on to the Church of Our Lady where the altar piece is a Michelangelo sculpture of the Madonna and Child. Made of Carrara marble, it's been stolen twice and is now safe again to view at the church. Across the street is Sint-Janshospitaal - the one that was a hospital from the 1100s to the 1970s. Now you'll find religious art and - my favourite - examples of old ambulances. A visit here makes you really appreciate modern medicine. It started to rain and we were getting hungry so we headed to the Friet Museum (Fry Museum). How could we visit Belgium without doing a deep dive into the history of fries?! We wanted to find out why so many people mistakenly call them 'French fries' - we also wanted to eat fries. Check and check. It stopped raining so we ended the Bruges tour by boarding a river cruise because there are parts of the city only visible from the water. I'd definitely recommend a boat ride if you're visiting Bruges - it's relaxing and offers a unique perspective not seen by other means. We absolutely loved visiting Bruges and hope you enjoyed this visit to the jewel of Belgium.

Visit Bruges at Night with The Way Away (Belgium Travel Vlog) | Eileen Aldis Travel Channel

Bruges Belgium travel guide for night-time! We met up with our friends, Ashley and Josh, who are also travel vloggers! Their channel is called The Way Away. We first met them in Mexico when we started this nomadic adventure. It’s so cool that our paths crossed again around the world in Bruges of all places! They came to our Airbnb to hang out for a bit before we all headed out after dark for a Bruges night walking tour. This was a great way to see the city and get a lot of different information and insights about the local history and culture. Walking tours are such a great way to get yourself oriented in a new place. My favourite part of this particular tour (which I’ll link below) was hearing about the origins of phrases from the medieval period that we still use today. Things like ‘throwing money out of the window’ and ‘stinking rich’ and ’s***-faced.’ We also heard some ghost stories about hauntings around Bruges that persist today. After the tour we went back to our place and ordered pizza! It was a great chance to warm up and we had all worked up an appetite after walking around. It was so wonderful to hang out with the Way Away and hear all about the adventures they’ve had since we last saw them. We hope you enjoyed the night walking tour of Bruges Belgium! Do you enjoy doing walking tours too?

Is Belgian Food Good? YES! ???? Brussels DIY Food Tour in Belgium

We're in Brussels on a DIY food tour tour and we can confirm, Belgium is epic and Belgian food is absolutely amazing! This is treat heaven...⬇ More Below ✈ Our 220 page guide on how to travel non-stop —

It's day 1 in Brussels and the best way to become acquainted with Belgium is to taste as much food as possible! Before we booked travel plans to Belgium we'd been told by so many people how incredible Brussels was, it's a destination that's been on our must travel list for so long now. It made sense that a DIY food tour was in order to taste our way around the city and see if Belgian food lives up to it's reputation... thats a firm yes. It totally does.

The first thing we noticed is Brussels is a stunning city and quickly has become one of our favs. Todays vlog is all about the food of Belgium and Brussels but the next few vlogs will show more of our adventures as we travel more of the city exploring the various sites and see what really makes Brussels tick.

You'll love Brussels as much as us, we highly recommend you check it out! There's loads of info on the Visit Brussels website:

Waffles in particular were the winner of the day for us. Turns out we only ever really knew about the Brussels waffle, but Leige waffles have changed our lives... they are absolutely heavenly and typing this right now we wish there was one in our hands ????

Los Churros & Waffles

Stoofvlees / carbonade flamande recipe:

3 large onions
1-1.2 kg of beef or pork meat, cut into large dices (let's say around 2 cm x 2 cm)
2-3 bottles of dark Belgian beer (preferably Leffe - 2 or 3 depends on how much you need to submerge the meat when you cook the sauce)
2 tablespoons of sirop de Liege / Luikse siroop (you can order it with worldwide shipping here: or at any Belgian store in the country you live)
2 slices of dark bread
2 tablespoons of mustard
2 bay leaf
1 clove
pinch of salt, pepper, thyme

How to prepare the dish:

*Peel and roughly chop the onions
*Heat a large stew and melt a knob of butter in it. Stew the onions in it over medium heat. Do not brown the onions.
*Heat a frying pan (STICKY KIND) over medium to high heat and melt a knob of butter in it, as well as olive oil so that it is 50/50 butter/olive oil.
*Sear the pieces of meat in the frying pan until they have a golden brown crust. Season the meat during baking with some ground pepper and a pinch of salt. It is best to fry a large amount of meat in several batches (to avoid releasing too much moisture, in which case you will cook the meat instead of searing it).
*Put the pieces of meat in the stew with onions.
*Deglaze the frying pan by pour in the brown beer and stirring it until all of the meaty pieces come off the pan and until the beer is boiling
*Once the beer is boiling, pour the entire contents of the pan into the meat stew. (Never pour cold beer directly onto the meat.) The meat has to be submerged in the Leffe. Add the bay leaves, thyme and let them cook in the pot.
*Add the clove (forgot to mention this in the video) and the apple-pear syrup (sirop de Liege).
*Generously spread a large slice of brown bread with sharp mustard. Place in the pot, on top of the meat, with the mustard-covered side down.
*Let simmer for 1 to 3 hours (1 for pork, more for beef) on medium heat until the meat is tender. Keep the lid OFF the jar until the sauce has a good thickness (stir frequently to avoid burning the meat). Then put the lid on after that so that the meat just cooks in the sauce. Stir regularly and check regularly.
*Bon appetit ;)

THE PERFECT AIRBNB ACCOMMODATION (BRUGES, BELGIUM APARTMENT TOUR AND REVIEW) | Eileen Aldis

Since giving up a permanent home and embracing full-time travel, we've stayed in a ton of different types of accommodation. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's not. I receive a bunch of questions about where to stay, how to use Airbnb, how Airbnb works, and what our experiences have been. The modern Airbnb where we stayed in Bruges, Belgium was so exceptional that I wanted to make a whole apartment tour showing you why and giving a review. It felt like the perfect Airbnb accommodation. What makes the difference anywhere is that when you walk in, you instantly feel like you're home. I've learned that it's not only about stylish design and how a place looks but also - mostly - all the little cozy details that make a house a home. This modern house was full of thoughtful details that let us know someone cared. The aesthetic felt minimalist and calming while at the same time having everything we could possibly need - and then some! The location was also removed from the main area where you find all the tourist activity which made it an extra relaxing retreat. Moving around the house, you can tell that the Airbnb host really went above and beyond to create a space that was functional, practical, warm, and inviting. When you first walk in our host had left out plenty of maps, business cards, and recommendations for local restaurants, bars, shops, and museums. She was very specific about what was good where and when to go. This help is invaluable when you've just arrived in a new place and don't know where to start. She also left coffee, (with cream and sugar!), Belgian beer, and oranges to make freshly squeezed juice in the kitchen for us. I've never before been to an Airbnb where you can enjoy a welcome drink without having to first locate a grocery store. How thoughtful is that?! The kitchen is most often where I notice things are missing. The place we stayed before this one didn't have a knife sharper than a butter knife. I literally couldn't have cut a tomato with it let alone done much actual cooking. This Bruges kitchen was well stocked with high quality pots, pans, utensils, and appliances. It even had two different kinds of coffee makers so you could choose which you prefer: pods or drip. You could cook a full on feast in this kitchen. There was also a big table to eat and work at which is something we always look for. When we work it's important to have a table to spread out on. The living room was cozy with comfortable furniture, a fireplace, a jar of candy to help yourself to, and a stack of magazines that made it feel homey. Even the hangers at the front door had been thought through because they were the 'no slip' kind that things don't slide off of. The backyard was gorgeous and had two different sitting areas to enjoy. It was a well maintained sanctuary with fruit trees and privacy from the neighbours. The main bedroom upstairs had the most comfortable bed I've slept in ever at an Airbnb. I also usually sleep with my own pillow that I travel around with but I didn't use it here. The pillow provided was that good! Our Airbnb host had even left authentic Belgian chocolates by our pillows. Such a sweet detail. The bathroom was stocked with any toiletries you might have forgotten and there were plenty of towels. Overall, this Airbnb was a dream and we loved staying there. I hope this video will help Airbnb hosts and guests with the tips and tricks that make an Airbnb experience really wonderful. It was fun to pretend we were living in Belgium, if only temporarily. Hope you enjoyed this! Would love to hear what details get you excited!

We are on the beach of Ostend, Belgium for an Ostend weekend. It is one of the best places to visit Belgium. Belgian food is amazing. There are so many Belgium treats, chocolate and snacks from Belgium to taste. After being in India for 2 months we're dying to try some of their most popular foods. We've got some super Belgian dishes lined up. What could possibly go wrong. Theodora’s family have a place in Ostend and we love going there. Oostende is especially for a beach walk in Oostende, also known as The Queen of Belgian sea-side resorts. Belgie Oostende “Stad aan zee.”

BRUSSELS' BEST FOOD TOUR with Belgian Beer, Chocolates, and Waffles! (Bruxelles)

Usually when you get Belgian waffles at home they can vary quite a bit, and what are Belgian waffles, anyway? Did you even know there are different types...? How do Belgians actually eat their waffles, and how does that compare to how the average American eats a waffle?

How good is Belgian Beer really?

To be clear, I am not usually a beer drinker. I love wine, gin, mezcal, tequila and good whisky. I do prefer Belgian style wheat ales and do like Lindeman's Framboise (raspberry) beer you can find and buy in the US. The best thing about Belgian beer in Belgium is that every brand and taste is unique, and you can tell from the first sip that this is a high quality beer culture.

Brussels Style vs. Liege Style Waffles - Which is better?

There are two main styles; Brussels Style (which is what most westerners think of) and Liege Style. Liege waffles are usually round while Brussels are usually rectangular, but that is just the surface level difference. Liege style is made with a thicker, yeasty dough that gives an altogether different flavor and texture -- find out more when you watch!

Also because of the time of the year we visited Brussels, the amazing Christmas markets were just beginning, and Brussels is one of the most famous cities in the world for amazing lights and massive Christmas markets filled with fun-loving people, good food, drinks, and of course, gluhwein (hot mulled/spiced wine)!

IN BRUGES PART DEUX: BRUGES HARDER! Bruges, Belgium - Leonard Does Europe S2 E6

Due to being advised that Disneyland Paris required five days to be fully appreciated, I was only able to allocate one full day in Bruges during my last European trip. After having a miserable time in Disneyland, and falling completely in love with Bruges, I vowed to rectify this huge planning mistake by making it my home base in Belgium for five full days on this trip.

So, early on a Thursday morning, we headed to CPH for our $72 per-person Brussels Airlines flight to BRU, Belgium’s main airport. While waiting for the flight, we blew all of our remaining Danish Kroners on booze at the Duty Free shop, which was good, since the damn things aren’t used anywhere else in the world. After a short ninety minutes in the air, we landed in Brussels and boarded a train to Bruges Central. From there it was a loud luggage-clattering-on-cobblestones fifteen minute walk to the AirBnb.

Prior to my previous European trip, people kept telling me that Bruges was a “mini-Amsterdam”, and my reaction was always: “Why would I want to go to a small version of Amsterdam? Why not just go Amsterdam?” It wasn’t until I actually visited the town that I realized it’s not just a smaller version of Amsterdam, it’s also much more quaint and charming and relaxing and cozy.

This revelation was reinforced after having time to explore new places, as well as revisit others that I’d already been to, but which were new to my mother and Monika. While I certainly enjoyed revisiting the canal tour, ordering a strong beer sampler at 2be Bar (wrongly identified as the Beer Museum in my video), eating mustard-dipped aged gouda and downing a dangerously smooth 11% ABV Straffe Hendrik Quad at De Halve Maan brewery, and quaffing the world-famous heady Tripel at the nearly impossible to find alleyway bar De Garre, there were plenty of interesting new experiences, too, such as:
-- The Old Chocolate House, which bills itself as home to the best hot chocolate in Bruges. It’s served in an interesting manner: they give you a bunch of chocolate chips in an edible chocolate cup, along with a mug full of steaming milk, into which you whisk the chocolate. I guess the idea is to let you carefully achieve your preferred milk-to-chocolate taste ratio, but my mom is a chocolate fiend, so she just dumped them all in straight away. I’m not a big sweets guy, but she absolutely loved it, and was also smitten with the Belgian waffle we ordered.
--A weekend flea market along the Dijver canal, which was filled with old weird trinkets.
--A visit to the Basilica of the Holy Blood, which houses a cloth supposedly used by Joseph of Arimathea to clean the blood off of Jesus after he died. Unfortunately, we weren’t aware that the cloth is only shown to the public every Friday (and every day from May 3rd to 17th), so we didn’t get to see it.
--Beers at ‘t Brugs Beertje, a world-famous “brown bar” that carries three hundred different bottled Belgian beers, and five drafts. Every beer is served in its own unique and special glass; even if they only have one bottle of a particular beer, that beer will have a glass on the shelf just waiting to be used!
--Dinner at La Dentelliere, a charming restaurant across from the swan-filled Minnewater Park. Like many restaurants in Bruges, they serve the local specialty: mussels in a variety of sauces, including cream, white wine, garlic, cream and curry, cream and white wine, and cream and beer. Being a vegetarian, I didn’t partake, but I did get cheese croquettes, which sound much fancier than what they are: fried cheese.
--A long but pleasant walk to the St. Janshuis and Koelewei windmills, which are on the east side of town on the outer canal ring. St. Janshuis was built in 1770 and is actually a functional windmill that still grinds flour.

Even losing my $500 DJI Spark drone in a canal (full story at didn’t put a damper on what ended up being a lovely trip to what must be one of the loveliest cities in the world.
