Our tribute to the final flight of the British Airways 747s from Heathrow

We're still reminiscing about the farewell flight of the 747 earlier this month.

As a tribute, this we've put together a short video to commemorate the British Airways #BA747Farewell.

She shall be missed by all of us at Heathrow. Farewell old friend, truly the #QueenOfTheSkies!

The Last British Airways B747 Flight - An Emotional Farewell

I travelled to the UK to see the Final British Airways 747 flight and landing. During this trip, I was able to see all 3 British Airways 747 Retro Liveries across the countryside in England and Wales.

My first stop was Dunsfold Aerodrome, where I visited the Landor livery 747. I was able to go inside and take a last look at the cabin and the cockpit. Then I drove to Cotswold Airport to see the Negus livery 747. Cotswold Airport CEO Suzannah Harvey personally gave me a tour, explaining the work being done to save the 747.

My last stop was in Cardiff, Wales where the BOAC livery 747 flew out from Cardiff to St Athan; it was only a short ferry flight but it was a very emotional one nonetheless, as this was the final BA 747 flight. I was at St Athan to watch the Final BA 747 landing. It was a momentous landing with a quick stop on the short runway. After landing, I went inside the 747 to interview the pilots and witness the final power down of the 747. It was the end of an era for the British Airways 747.

All 3 BA retro 747 liveries (Landor, Negus and BOAC) will be preserved in the UK.

Thanks to British Airways and SpeedBird TV for sharing some great footage:

British Airways says goodbye to G-CIVD - The first of its last 747 jumbo jets

British Airways has retired its first Boeing 747 since announcing last month that all 31 of its jumbo jets had sadly flown their last commercial services.

The Boeing 747-400, registration G-CIVD, departed from London Heathrow on Tuesday, 18 August at around 10.30am local time after more than 25 magnificent years of flying.

The 747 has been an iconic part of British Airways’ fleet for nearly fifty years. At one point the airline operated 57 of the aircraft, with the jumbo jet’s first flight to New York in 1971.

The fuel-hungry aircraft are slowly being phased out by British Airways as they reach the end of their working life in order to help meet our commitment to net zero by 2050. The airline has invested heavily in new, modern long-haul aircraft including six A350s and 32 787s which are around 25 per cent more fuel-efficient than the 747.

One last flight on the British Airways 747 (warning: may cause nostalgia)

In this video we take a look back at what it was like to fly in the Upper Deck of the British Airways 747, in Club World (business) class. The footage was recorded in October 2019 on a flight from London Heathrow to San Francisco. The Queen of the Skies did not disappoint, as ever. We didn't know this would be our last transatlantic run on the BA Jumbo at the time (and we're kind of glad we didn't), but in the end it was a fitting farewell. BA has plenty of new planes these days and a much better business class product (the Club Suite) as well. But the 747-400 will always have a special place in our hearts.

British Airways 747 Farewell 08OCT2020

It's farewell to British Airways' last 2 747s at Heathrow.
What an incredibly sad day, British Airways' last 2 remaining 747-400s at Heathrow departed their home for the last time. It truly is the end of an era with BA's 747s having graced the skies of Heathrow for 50 years. It is hard to imagine never ever seeing a British Airways 747 at Heathrow, ever again. To suddenly go from being the world's largest passenger operator of the type a before covid hit to now having none at all.
G-CIVB, in the 'Negus' livery took off first on 27R and soon disappeared into the low cloud heading straight to her final resting place at Kemble (GBA). G-CIVY followed immediately behind again going straight into the clouds then did a circuit to the South to come back round for a fly-by over 27L before she too headed to her final resting place at St Athan (DGX).

The last 2 BA 747s depart from Heathrow. #BA747farewell AND first 747-400s delivered to BA - 1989.

8th October 2020. Dark grey skies; a dismal wet and windy Heathrow - perhaps a fitting ending marking the final 2 British Airways 747s to leave Heathrow Airport. What a contrast to the bright sunny day in July 1989 when the first 2 747-400s were delivered brand new to BA; G-BNLA and BNLC.
Here is a film then of both events - the last 2 747s to leave; G-CIVY as flight BA 747 (bound for St Athan Wales, almost certainly for scrap) and G-CIVB as flight BA 400; heading for Kemble Cotswolds (hopefully) for preservation; PLUS a look back at the first 2 747s delivered to BA in 1989 (I remember it well!)

Today at Heathrow, the wind was gusting quite strongly and the rain did nothing to improve visibility - resulting in both 747s disappearing into the overcast remarkably quickly.
G-CIVY flew a circuit around the Airport and came back for a missed approach (flypast), which was quite a poignant sight.
The Air Traffic Control Comms are all captured- including the farewell signoff by the crew on board G-CIVY; the last BA 747 to fly from or over Heathrow.
So enjoy the end and look back with nostalgia at the 3 minute film within the film; showing the shiny new 747-400s arriving at Heathrow, landing simultaneously.
As Lord King, Chairman of British Airways at the time the new aircraft were delivered says about the 747-400 in the film I've included:
It's as good as you can get; I suppose one day they'll make something better - but that's it at the moment.....how true are those words....

BOAC 747 IS SCRAPPED. August 2023. A Farewell tribute to G-BYGC. The best moments from 2019-2021.

Earlier this week I took the 300 mile round trip from home to St Athan Wales, to see for myself the final days of the iconic BOAC retro liveried BA 747, G-BYGC and to say my final goodbye. The rain was coming down in sheets, but it seemed a fitting backdrop to the bleak sight that I saw when I arrived.

The aircraft was moved to the aircraft break up area last week, on 22nd August 2023 after having the wings removed. You'll see glimpses of other aircraft being dismantled including G-MIDY, BA's 24 year old A320 which flew to St Athan on 28 June this year.

Since moving to the break up area, it appears that the undercarriage is about to be taken off judging by the chocks and supporting structures under the fuselage. Panels have been removed from the tailplane and some windows appear missing in the upper deck. In the film you can see ECube personnel removing fixtures from the interior of the aircraft, presumably for sale or upcycling.

This film charts the highlights and key moments of the short service life that BYGC had in the BOAC retro livery. I filmed the first passenger departure in the new livery, on 19 February 2019, as well as the final Heathrow departure on 20 June 2020; so have included both of these historic moments in this tribute film. I've also included some footage of when I revisited BYGC at St Athan in September 2021, when it was still intact; as well as a Heathrow departure in the days before COVID.

G-BYGC flew from Cardiff Wales to St Athan on the 11th December 2020; fittingly as flight BAW 747, with the stated aim of preserving the aircraft. A press release from the British Airways Media department from 1st December 2020 states:
Tuesday, 1 December 2020 – British Airways' Queens of the Skies will continue to inspire aviation enthusiasts across the UK for years to come, after permanent homes have been found for its remaining retro-liveried Boeing 747 aircraft – the last to leave the British Airways fleet.

The aircraft, registrations G-BNLY and G-BYGC, are this month due to depart from British Airways’ engineering base in Cardiff, where they will be waved off by the British Airways engineers who for many years have proudly maintained the 747 fleet. The pair were among several aircraft painted in heritage liveries to mark the airline’s centenary last year.

Adorned in the iconic Landor livery, used between 1984 and 1997, G-BNLY has been given a new lease of life as a permanent exhibit at Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey. It will join its sister 747, G-CIVW, which was retired in late October and features the current Chatham Dockyard livery.

G-BYGC, painted in the BOAC ‘Gold Speedbird’ livery used between 1963 and 1974, will make the short journey from Cardiff Airport to the Bro Tathan business park in the Vale of Glamorgan. It will be maintained as a heritage piece by aviation specialists eCube Solutions to showcase the pre-eminent contribution British Airways’ 747 fleet made to UK aviation.

Sean Doyle, CEO of British Airways, said: “While we will miss seeing them grace our skies, we are delighted to have found permanent homes for our remaining centenary 747 aircraft.

“We think they have great historical importance, not only to British Airways but to the entire aviation industry, and we are pleased they will be preserved for future generations in locations in the UK.

For once I am lost for words......

BA Landor 747 is saved! Final flight into Dunsfold. G-BNLY. 5 December 2020. #747 #qots #landor

Runway Centre Line viewpoint. Saturday 5th December 2020. Earlier this week and building on the success of the #SaveLandor campaign; British Airways officially announced that the Landor livery747, G-BNLY would be preserved at Dunsfold Aerodrome, the home of fellow 747 G-CIVW which flew here on 22nd October 2020. (See film on my channel).
Today G-BNLY left Cardiff airport where it has been in store since June and took the 40 minute flight to Dunsfold as flight BA 9154. The aircraft flew around the airport before making the approach and landing into the prevailing wind, landing on Runway 07. I've captured these moments in this film standing at the dead centreline viewpoint from Runway 07/25.
This aircraft began life in the Landor scheme, so it is especially fitting that it should have been preserved, representing perhaps the finest period in BAs aviation history:- The world's favourite airline.
At the end we hear Dunsfold Tower welcoming the crew and giving a fitting testimony to this beautiful aircraft. Enjoy this short film capturing this historic occasion.

Tribute to the British Airways 747-400

British Airways announced that they will be retiring their 747-400 fleet. The 747 was the backbone of the British Airways fleet for many years and was a true icon of the airline. I have so many great memories with this aircraft and wanted to share why this plane meant so much to me.

“Landor” is saved! British Airways Landor 747 G-BNLY. A tribute. #qots #ba747retirement

Quoted from the British Airways press release:

Tuesday, 1 December 2020 – British Airways' Queens of the Skies will continue to inspire aviation enthusiasts across the UK for years to come, after permanent homes have been found for its remaining retro-liveried Boeing 747 aircraft – the last to leave the British Airways fleet.

The aircraft, registrations G-BNLY and G-BYGC, are this month due to depart from British Airways’ engineering base in Cardiff, where they will be waved off by the British Airways engineers who for many years have proudly maintained the 747 fleet. To celebrate this good news, Here is a short film taken back on a grey misty late morning on 17th December 2019, showing a typical pre-COVID flow of departing aircraft from Heathrow's Runway 27 Right. G-BNLY is shown taxiing from Terminal 5 to the holding point and then departing with the BA 219 to Denver. You cannot mistake the distinctive sound of the 4 Rolls Royce RB211s - both as the aircraft taxis and then of course on the roaring takeoff itself. As always, you will hear the ATC as the Tower give taxi and takeoff instructions, as well as catching the conversation from the crew to the Tower, as they wait for confirmation from the cabin crew that the cabin is secure for takeoff.
We won't ever see this aircraft flying from Heathrow again - but let's remember and celebrate through this film, all that was great about this Queen of the Skies.

My favourite plane - the British Airways 747 jumbo at Heathrow Airport. Final video before they retired in 2020

Farewell to the iconic British Airways 747 aka Queen of the Skies!

A sad day for avition as the British Airways’ Queen is being retired! Such an iconic Speedbird and a flying legend. This is my tribute to this majestic plane. The first part of the video are the BA's 747s miniatures that we current have in our plane collection and the second part was the last time I had the chance to spot one of them (MIA 2018).

British Airways flew the Jumbos for over 49 years. The company first operated the -100, -200 and -300 variants before the -400, which is being active since 1989.
