Take note, I may look younger in this video as I made the 'talking head' part of the video over a year ago too.
I'm very aware that New Zealand is still a difficult country to enter with its restrictions on entry during the pandemic, but I hope this video will give people planning a trip to New Zealand for the future some ideas.

A road trip from Wanaka to Queenstown in Southern New Zealand. It passes through the famous Crown Range road route with its sweeping vistas and hairpin turns.

Crown Range Road is a memorable journey located in the Otago region of the South Island of New Zealand. It’s an exhilarating road with hairpin bends, serpentines and steep grades.
This asphalted road (formerly State Highway 89) is 68km long. It connects Queenstown with Wanaka. This drive is not for the faint hearted and several of the bends are actual hairpins bends. The drive on the descent drops away to a seemingly bottomless gorge.
Located within the Crown Range, it’s one of the highest roads of the country reaching an altitude of 1.121m (3,677ft) above the sea level. Along the way you should also allow time to stop and admire the massive views. The views along the road are simply stunning and spectacular and the driving is well worth it – with absolutely spectacular views over Queenstown. The views are so breathtaking. Many stops to get out and enjoy the views and take photos. The descent from the Crown Range into the alpine valley below provides the most breathtaking late afternoon views.

The adventure capital of New Zealand, Queenstown, the South Island’s magnetic mountain resort, thrives on adrenaline. Site of the first commercial bungee-jumping operation — established in 1988 over the Kawarau River — Queenstown is the place to test your courage by jumping off, flying over or skimming above things. During the winter (June through September), visitors flock to four ski areas in the surrounding Southern Alps. The rest of the year, Queenstown serves as the gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park, Fiordland National Park in the west, and countless hikes, including multiday treks on the Milford, Routeburn Greenstone and Caples tracks. In March, the beginning of fall, the crowds have eased but the weather is still great for outdoor adventures.

Wanaka is located on the southern shores of Lake Wanaka, in west Otago. Embraced by the Southern Alps, Wanaka is Otago's second resort town after Queenstown.
The crystal-clear waters of Lake Wanaka, New Zealand's fourth largest lake, reflect the snow-capped peaks of Mount Aspiring National Park. Here you can absorb the unstoppable beauty of pristine wilderness, and know that it will be easy to find a great restaurant for dinner. You don't have to be a mountaineer to enjoy the delights of the park (although any one of a dozen world-class local guides can accompany you to the top).
The township of Wanaka is a magnet for visitors who want to find the perfect combination of outdoor adventure and indoor luxury. There are comfortable places to stay, great shops and eateries—and all the time there's the call of the wild. The lake, mountains and around-the-year events calendar will keep you looking forward to tomorrow.
The seasons are particularly noticeable in Wanaka. Spring (October - December) brings an abundance of blossom. Summer brings cloudless, hot, sunny days (January - March). Autumn brings splendid colours of gold and red (April - June), Winter brings crisp days, and snow lovers can enjoy huge freedom the mountain slopes (July - September).

In today’s video I’m sharing with you my 12-day South Island, New Zealand Road trip Itinerary!
Last January I embarked on a road trip adventure with two friends to explore the magic of New Zealand. Our goal was to witness breathtaking landscapes, encounter wildlife, enjoy the great outdoors, stay in unique places, and see as much as we could without feeling too rushed or exhausted. Having now completed this epic trip, I’m glad to say our itinerary achieved all that and more!
In this video I share my comprehensive itinerary, highlight our favorite spots, showcase some unique places to stay, and review our favorite activities/tours. This itinerary breakdown is meant to give you a better idea of what you can see and do in 12 days, and give you ideas for places worth visiting.
This is by no means the ‘best’ itinerary of the South Island. We may have missed a few of the most visited spots and instead ventured off the beaten trail at times. I hope you get inspired to visit both the tourist hot spots as well as some more unique and ‘obscure’ places we visited on the island.

4K Scenic Drive | Christchurch to Akaroa, New Zealand
Akaroa is located on the Banks Peninsula, 40km southeast of Christchurch, New Zealand. This place has a beautiful landscape formed by the erosion of volcanos.
The drive starts at central Christchurch, the largest city on the south island, heads to Akaroa, and then goes on Summit Rd. to see the breathtaking views of Akaroa.

It's about a 6 hour drive from Queenstown to Christchurch. This scenic drive from Queenstown to Christchurch is a 493.5 kilometer-long trip (306.6 miles) that without stopping takes around 6 hours. With that said, this journey should take you much longer if you truly want to explore the area. You will want to stop by Cromwell, Wānaka, Lake Pukaki, Mt Cook, Lake Tekapo, Fairlie (for the famous pie) along the way. It is truly relaxed driving in late autumn. Otago is in golden colours.

Post lockdown, a 3-week road trip in August 2020 where we planned to explore New Zealand’s south island (Te Waipounamu) with a camper van.
The video contains a mix of shots from different locations but the main ones are:
- Mt Cook / Aoraki
- Lake Pukaki
- Moana
- Dunedin
- Katiki Point
This is winter in New Zealand and with the on-going pandemic in the world and the border restrictions, this trip was anything but crowded. Most of the time we had the place to ourselves.

Spend a Day Travelling New Zealand's South Island 4K- A Road Trip from Franz Josef to Queenstown EP2
Glen and Nat embarked on a journey through the breathtaking South Island of New Zealand, and their adventure continued from Franz Josef to Queenstown. En route, they had the opportunity to appreciate the dramatic and awe-inspiring scenic beauty of various places such as Bruce Bay, Blue Pools, Thunder Creek Falls, and Wanaka, among others. Every location they visited had its unique charm that left Glen and Nat stunned, and they couldn't help but marvel at the natural wonders surrounding them. With every turn, they were greeted with stunning visual treats that left an indelible mark on their memories. The South Island of New Zealand is truly a paradise, defined by picturesque landscapes, and it's no wonder why it's one of the most popular destinations in the world.

Lindis Pass links the Mackenzie Basin with Central Otago. For many months of the year, you can expect to see snow in this mountainous area - often down to the roadside. Here snow tussock grassland dominates the landscape.The pass is the highest point on the South Island's state highway network, and the second highest point on the New Zealand state highway network, after the Desert Road (SH 1) in the Central North Island.
