Madagascar - how to travel to Madagascar and how to prepare your trip

How to travel Madagascar?
In this video I explain what you need to prepare before traveling to Madagascar. This includes general information about visa on arrival, the currency, what are the highlights of Madagascar and how to get around.

Getting around in Madagascar can be really time consuming so we booked a private driver and one internal flight with Air Madagascar. This helps you to get around faster as you can't really rely on the public transport. For our trip we mainly focus on:
Ranomafana, Andasibe Mantadia national park and Île aux Natte (Nosy Noraha). Of course there are more places to visit like: Antananarivo, Isalo, Nosy Be or Antsiranana.

Your medical preparation must include: malaria prophylaxis, typhoid, hepatites and rabies, polio.

Madagascar Travel Tips for the Modern Explorer

Madagascar is a unique and exciting destination for travelers, but there are a few important things to keep in mind when planning your trip. First, make sure to check the visa requirements for your country of origin and ensure that you have all necessary documents before departing. Additionally, domestic travel within Madagascar can be challenging, so it's important to plan ahead and consider hiring a guide or driver to help navigate the country.

Some other useful tips to keep in mind include being prepared for varying weather conditions, bringing appropriate clothing and gear, and being mindful of local customs and etiquette. Additionally, it's important to be aware of the potential for crime and to take necessary precautions to keep yourself and your belongings safe. Overall, with a little bit of planning and preparation, a trip to Madagascar can be a truly unforgettable experience.

Madagascar | My 7-Day Trip In This Remote Country - Country #77 to Visit All Countries

In this video, I share my travel experience in Madagascar which is my country #77 in my quest to visit all 193 UN-recognized countries around the world. Travelling to Madagascar was rough as we needed to take 4 planes to get there. The Antananarivo airport was also brutal as airport staff tried getting a bribe from me as I went through security. Our 7-day trip to Madagascar took us to Andasibe, Analamazoatra, Vakona Reserve, Antrisabe, Avenue of the Baobabs, Morondova, Kirindy Reserve, and Antananarivo. The final day of my trip proved to be horrible as I got one of the worst food poisonings I've ever had which lasted 7 days before I completely recovered from it.

My First 24 Hours in MADAGASCAR

What a whirlwind the past 24 hours of my life have been in Madagascar!!

I decided to come to Madagascar with absolutely no plan. It's fun being spontaneous sometimes.

I arrived in the capital of Madagascar called Antananarivo early this morning with no hotel reservation, no plan and no idea what I'd be doing... Just seeking adventure!

Through Facebook, I got in touch with a local girl named Ali, who picked me up at the airport with her 2 classmate friends, Dave and Nancy. Not only have they been AMAZING tour guides around Antananarivo, but Dave volunteered to let me sleep at his house with his family -- who cooked me a delicious dinner of Madagascar food called Vary Amin’anana. Life doesn't get any better than this!

Today is a day that I'll never forget. I am so happy to be back in Africa and so thankful to be able to find people like Ali, Dave & Nancy from social media. I can't wait to see more of Madagascar over the coming days!

How to travel around Madagascar? ???? We had a private driver and a private car.

We booked our private driver here:
Like always there are many ways to travel the country Madagascar. By public bus (public transport), by plane (Air Madagascar), by guides tours or by private car. Each option got pros and cons. We booked a private driver with a private car to travel around Madagascar and it was a good decision. We contacted the agency GMT+ Great Madagascar Tours and got an awesome driver! We discussed the itinerary in advance. They told us where to stop, which hostels are good and which tours to do! We didn’t book everything in advance to be more flexible! But the driver made it possible to make many bookings on the way! This was a very good experience!

Hi summarize all other ways of transport
Public busses: full with people, they need a lot of time to get from a to b
Planes: very expensive and they cancel the flights every now and then (you won’t get a refund). The only company flying around Madagascar is Air Madagascar
Big guides tours around Madagascar: well, not really our style and t many people on a bus.

-Nairobi to Antananarivo
-Antananarivo to Antsirabe (one night in Antsirabe)

- Île aux Natte to Mahambo
- Mahambo to Tamatave
- Tamatave to Andasibe
- Andasibe to Antananarivo

You find more information about our trip in this playlist:

A short review about how we travelled:
The easiest way is to travel around by a private driver. We booked a driver with to company GMT+3 and payed about 50 Euros per day. As Madagascar is really big, we also booked a flight with Air Madagascar. But Air Madagascar is first of all really expensive and secondly they cancel their flights quite often. And you won't get a refund. As it is hard to get around, transportation is slow (for example the taxi brusses need a lot of time to get around and even by private car it can take hours) you really need to plan which part of Madagascar you want to visit. We focused on the center and east coast. Our highlights were Île aux Natte, Ranomafana and Andasibe. The people of Madagascar are friendly - that was an amazing experience - but they are also really poor.

Madagascar: Antananarivo, Antsirabe and Ranomafana - how to travel around + Kenya Airways review

How to travel around Madagascar? What do I need to know? How should I prepare? How are the people like? How to get around? How do the cities look like? Many questions running through my head while planning the trip to Madagascar. In my videos about Madagascar I give you an overview about information you need to know before going. For example how to get around - we had a privat driver for €50 a day.We booked with the company GMT+3. You can also use public transport which is really slow. Depending how much time you have public transport is cheaper for sure (some rides cost like 20.000 Ariary)! We almost didn't book any hotel / resort in advance. We just went to the town and looked for accommodation which is really easy if you have your own driver.

I also give you some ideas about the airline Kenya airways, our short stay in Nairobi (Kenya), how much you pay for the hotels in Madagascar, how to book tours (hikes) through the National Park of Ranomafana and much more.

Our route in this video:
-Hamburg to Amsterdam
-Amsterdam to Nairobi (one night in Nairobi)
-Nairobi to Antananarivo
-Antananarivo to Antsirabe (one night in Antsirabe)
-Antsirabe to Ambositra
-Ambositra to Ranomafana (two nights in Ranomafana)
-Ranomafana to Antananarivo (one night in Antananarivo / hotel close to the airport)

Madagascar: Andasibe, Analamazaotra, Mantadia and Antananarivo. How to travel around?

How to travel Madagascar? This is my last video about traveling around Madagascar. After leaving Mahambo and passing by Tamatave we arrived in Andasibe! Andasibe is a small town where you can visit two major national parks: Analamazaotra and Mantadia. A perfect place to experience wildlife and all kind of lemurs: black and white lemur, brown lemur, the indri etc. We also visited the Vakona forest lodge where you can actually touch lemurs. They will jump on you, you can pet them and everything. Andasibe is quite touristy, there are greater spots to visit but it is also a must do in Madagascar!

Some quick facts about Andasibe:
-you pay 45.000 Ariary/per person for every day you want to enter the national parks
-Mantadia: 70.000 Ariary guide fee
-Analamazaotra: 50.000 Ariary guide fee
-Vakona forest lodge: 25.000 Ariary per person

costs for the driver (gmt+3):
-400 Euros for the car + driver (8 days)
-146 Euros for the petrol

total costs for the whole trip around Madagascar for 15 days: €1.935 / $2.065 per person
