Designed by noted architect Greville Rickard and built in 1939 for real estate magnate Charles V. Paterno, this Great Estate later became the home of famed financier and art patron Joseph H. Hirshhorn, who displayed his eminent art collection and sculpture garden here before gifting it to the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington. Under the Hilfigers’ ownership, the painstaking reinvention of this historic property brings the elegant charm of its rich heritage to the highest caliber of modern standards, adding cohesive enhancements to the original design.
Meticulously restored and renovated with sensitivity to the historic architecture, this grand residence encompasses 13,344± square feet including six bedrooms, seven full baths, and three powder rooms. Six fireplaces, elaborately carved millwork, intricate plasterwork, decorative painting, wide-board and limestone floors, and fine textile wall-coverings highlight the trove of exceptional finishes. As another one-of-a-kind flourish, architect Greville Rickard designed images of himself and the builder in stained glass panels framing a stone archway. Extraordinary care was taken to preserve the original finishes while engineering the home’s new systems.
Traveling up the meandering drive arrives at the stately gates of the dramatic entrance courtyard where the majestic manor comes into view, romantically picturesque among glorious gardens and shade trees in an atmosphere reminiscent of the English countryside. Preluded by the turreted entry, the beamed great hall presents an impressive reception space where the baronial Elizabethan-style staircase spirals upward in a soaring leaded-glass bay. The handsome carved millwork and palatial fireplace are also notable elements crafted in the tradition of the European masters, reflecting the home’s signature style of quiet grandeur and inviting warmth.
Accompanying the more formal rooms are a theater room, family/game room, and lower-level wine cellar/tasting room – all refined with exquisite finishes. Six bedroom suites feature the comfortably elegant main suite with two baths, two dressing rooms, and an office/study.
Conducive to entertaining, most first-floor rooms open to engaging outdoor living spaces in the idyllic landscape, inviting a stroll through the fountained rose garden, boxwood knot garden, water garden with fountained koi pond, and topiary garden. “I always wait for the perfect place to open a store, so I was very excited when this Rodeo Drive location became available,” says acclaimed designer Carolina Herrera, photographed in her new CH Carolina Herrera boutique on the storied Los Angeles shopping boulevard. The California flagship for her lifestyle brand—consisting of chic women’s, men’s, and children’s clothing, as well as accessories and travel items—is housed in a 2,700-square-foot space that emphasizes old-world sophistication, giving subtle nods to the city’s Spanish heritage with elements like plaster-tile ceilings, marble floors, and oak dressing-room partitions studded with cast iron. Also on display is Herrera’s new Crisp White Cotton shirt line, a tribute to her own iconic wardrobe staple. “There can be no wrong way of wearing one,” Herrera says. “A white shirt always looks snappy and seductive.” Much like the designer herself.
