Is Iceland's Ring Road a Misleading Tourist Idea - The Full Story of The Historical Road

This is the history of our Ring-Road or why it is a misleading concept and not intended to be the simple concept that many tourists use as a guideline while traveling around Iceland today. This was our ring road back in 1974 so check out the full story before you do the roundtrip because there might be some better ideas out there for you, and welcome to Iceland.

ICELAND ???????? 10 Day Ring Road Group Trip | Ep 1 - Reykjavík to the East Fjords

In early October, we spent 10 days travelling all the way around Iceland on a group tour.

This was a bespoke tour I organised with Intrepid travel and put on sale to you guys that follow my channel!

15 of us went exploring round Iceland with a local guide, experiencing so many of the country’s highlights.

In this first episode we travel from Reykjavik to the main sites of the Golden Circle. We managed to see the Northern Lights on the first night of the trip!

At Jökulsárlón we cruised between icebergs on the glacier lagoon, before hiking into an ice cave.

We made our way to the beautiful town of Seydisfjordur in the East Fjords, before visiting Hengifoss, relaxing in the Vök Baths and then settling down at our farm stay in Möðrudalur.

ICELAND Ring Road - Part 3 // East Iceland Fjords// ICELAND TRAVEL 2021

Welcome back! We are continuing our Iceland road trip, taking two weeks to drive around the entire Iceland ring road.

In this video, we explore east Iceland. Our first stop is Vestrahorn mountain and the Iceland black sand beach of Stokksnes. Then we wind our way along the coast through Iceland mountains that meet the sea in some of the most dramatic coastline the country has to offer.

The East Fjords are one of the best spots for Iceland photography as there are stunning views around every corner. You can also find some of the best Iceland driving on the ring road, as the road winds in and out of the fjords.

We end up taking a little detour to the coastal town of Seydisfjordur, where the only way in and out is a pretty treacherous mountain road. That's an experience we wont forget!

Thanks for watching and PLEASE SUBSCRIBE (this really helps to support us!)

Iceland Ring Road in 6 Days [Travel Guide Itinerary in 4K]

We wrote a detailed travel guide with our complete itinerary for Iceland ring road travels, including Iceland ring road map with landmarks we visited, places we stayed, car we rented, total travel cost (food, car rental, hotels, car gas), how we paid for things and much more. You can read it at:

We used Blue Car Rental to reserve a vehicle for our Iceland travels. Blue Car Rental offers much lower rates with many insurance types included compared to standard car rental companies. Use our link to make reservation and get an additional 5% discount:
✔️

This travel guide video shows you our 6 day travel itinerary for driving Iceland’s Ring road (Route 1). If you do not count day 6 we spent exploring Reykjavík, you can potentially complete Iceland ring road in 5 days.

Our map of Iceland ring road trip can be viewed here:

Blue Car Rental is Iceland's largest local car rental company offering the newest vehicle fleet, unlimited mileage, free cancellation and very affordable rates that include such insurance as SCDW, CDW, theft and gravel protection. They offer discounts for multi-day reservations too. We had very smooth hustle-free experience of renting a car from Blue Car Rental. Our review of them at:

Golden Circle route, part 2 of our trip here:

------------------------------------------------------------------
There were several items we were very glad we prepared ahead of time:
► Waterproof Rain Poncho: It often rains in Iceland. We took rain ponchos, which helped us when it poured a few days non-stop. This poncho is very lightweight and easy to pack.
► Power Bank Portable Charger by Anker: Sometimes, we needed to charge out devices and did not have an outlet available. We chose this Anker power bank for its large capacity and ability to get charged by 2 USB inputs, which recharge the power bank 2x faster.
► Travel Outlet Adapter Kit: This is a must have item when traveling abroad. This adapter is ETL listed and was tested to North American safety standards. We avoid buying electronics not UL or ETL tested for safety.
► Free Downloadable Map Phone App: We used Offline Maps Navigation by VirtualMaze (Android iOS
► Car USB Charger for Phones: Given how much time we spent on Ring road, we opted to have a dedicated car charger for our devices. While rental cars may have USB charging ports, they are sometimes slow to charge.
► Phone Mount for Car: In case you don't have one, we highly recommend it for your trip to Iceland. We took our phone mount with us and it saved us a lot of headaches.
► Lightweight Travel Tripod: We love traveling and taking photos. Iceland is a photographer paradise with its dramatic landscapes. To capture those views we took a lightweight travel tripod that is compact, but steady enough to withstand winds. We have been using Bonfoto lightweight tripods for 4+ years and they never disappointed us. They offer inexpensive aluminum and higher priced carbon fiber versions. We personally use the carbon fiber version, as it is more weather resistant.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Places We Mentioned:

00:27 - Seljalandsfoss waterfall and Gljúfrabúi waterfall.
01:19 - Skogafoss waterfall.
01:51 - Reynisfjara black sand beach
02:13 - Dyralaekjasker trail/rest area
02:47 - Skaftafell National Park and Svartifoss waterfall
03:20 - Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon and the diamond beaches across the road
04:53 - Dettifoss, Europe’s largest waterfall by volume of water viewed from road 864
05:37 - Lake Myvatn area, including Krafla Viti crater, Hverir (06:00) and Goðafoss waterfall (06:54)
07:15 - Akureyri
07:35 - Kolugljufur Waterfall
07:57 - Stykkisholmur
08:11 - Snaefellness Peninsula, including Kirkjufellsfoss(08:32), also known as Kirkjufell and Arnarstapi (09:56) and Hellnar
10:25 - Hraunfossar waterfalls
11:19 - Deildartunguhver

ICELAND IN SEPTEMBER Driving the Ring Road in ONE WEEK TRAVEL VLOG (The ULTIMATE Iceland Road Trip)

This is the ULTIMATE Iceland road trip! We drive Iceland's Ring Road in one week and see it all including the Westfjords and the Icelandic Highlands!

In this episode of Mapping It we drive around Iceland’s Ring Road! We only have 7 full days (and two partial days) to see as much of Iceland as we can. We start in Reykjavik and then move on to the Golden Circle. We trek into the Highlands to see some cool geothermal activity and make sure to stop for every waterfall we can! We visit the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and make a detour from the Ring Road to visit the Westfjords and Dynjandi waterfall. We spend a couple days exploring Northern Iceland and all the cool hikes, falls, and geothermal activity we can fit in. In Eastern Iceland, we make a pitstop in Seydisfjordur and drive through the East Fjords region on our way to the incredible South Coast of Iceland. We make stops at glacier lagoons, incredible canyons and black sand beaches. Finally, we wrap up our trip with a relaxing visit to the Blue Lagoon. It was a whirlwind, but it was so worth it!

The songs used in this episode are from Epidemic Sound:

- ABOUT US -
Hi! We are Pooja & Shravan, an illustrator-engineer duo from Bangalore brought together by the love of travel and adventure.

We have traveled together since the winter of 2016. On one such trip, we started documenting these travels on a humble phone camera. We soon realised that we really enjoy capturing these experiences. We are entirely self taught (students of the internet) and have learnt from binging on brilliant creators over the years.

In our videos you might find glimpses of places that are not spoken about enough. We always vouch for spots that are somewhat the underdogs. Our vlogs are sometimes vlog-ish and sometimes a documentation of the place as we see it. We hope that watching these videos will bring a little dose of joy to your day.

We love reading your comments and hearing your thoughts.
They motivate us and help us steer our creative path.

With love,
Pooja & Shravan

In the second episode of Circling Iceland we use our house in Nollur as a base to explore all the things to do in North Iceland starting with the Godafoss Waterfall. Luckily the weather was with us and we got lucky to see the Northern Lights right in front of our house - instead of sleeping we spent several hours in front of our house in total awe.

On our second day in the north we drove to Myvatn, Dettifoss and then all the way down to Bragdavellir where we moved into our next Apartment to explore sights in the east like the Hengifoss waterfall.
In the next episode we will show you the most popular sights in the south, including glaciers, waterfalls, impressive canyons but also some lesser known spots.

Traveling Icelands Ring Road is the perfect way to get to know the country on and off the tourist paths. Therefore we took about 2 weeks to get to know Iceland properly by exploring waterfalls, canyons, hot springs, glacier caves, black beaches and of course the stunning coastlines all around the island finishing off in Reykjavik with the countries biggest music festival called „Iceland Airwaves“

We’ll show you which places to visit & our favorite things to do in Iceland in the upcoming videos and how to plan & organize your very own road trip in Iceland. Make sure to subscribe & activate notification to not miss any episode!

Driving in Iceland // 10 Things to Know

Driving in Iceland was such a pleasure, because the Ring Road is full of waterfalls, mountain ranges, fjords, and other stunning scenery.
That said, there are a lot of things I wish I'd known before renting a car!
You can check out my complete guide at:

Here's a breakdown:
1. Only a few rental car companies have service right at the airport. For many, you'll have to wait for a shuttle to pick you up to go to their off-site location.
2. Bring a debit card with a pin for gas, since many gas stations don't take credit cards. Also, be sure to put a travel alert on your card to make sure it works.
3. Signage is good on the Ring Road,
4. The Ring Road is paved nicely, and has very little traffic.
5. Watch out for farm animals and wildlife.
6. Bridges narrow to one lane on the Ring Road.
7. Be prepared for snow on mountain passes most months of the year.
8. Use Road.is for road conditions any time of year.
9. The speed limit tops out at 90 km per hour.
10. We only saw one person pulled over by police, but watch for photo radar traps.

This video is primarily geared toward renting a car, rather than the camper vans which are very popular among tourists.

ICELAND RING ROAD TRIP: From South to East

We continue on to our adventure on Iceland's ring road. In this video, we will be visiting the best sites to see from the southern to the eastern part of Iceland. If you are planning to tackle the ring road in Iceland, expect to see beautiful and out of this world landscapes. Also, expect to be behind your itinerary, because you will find yourself making many unplanned stops along the ring road. And don't be upset about this just enjoy and embrace all the sights the Iceland's ring road has to offer!

We rented a camper van from Cozy Campers, and it was the best decision in tackling the ring road of Iceland. The camper van was comfortable, spacious, modern with an automatic and powerful engine, a perfect fit for the ring road.

The main sites we saw and showed in this video are Jokusarlon, which is a large glacial lake. We noted many seals here going about their seal business! They were very adorable! Then we headed to the Diamond beach which is right beside Jokulsarlon. It is a black volcanic sand beach located by the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon on the South Coast of Iceland where icebergs from the Breidamerkurjokull glacier drift ashore.

And we were officially finished with the Southern Part so we headed onto East of Iceland. Our first stop was Vestrahorn, there was a fee but it was totally worth it.

After Vestrahorn, we encountered a few problems. One is our drone malfunctioned! And we faced a real danger when driving the ring road in Iceland. So tune in till the end to see how we survived it.

We hope that this travel guide to Iceland ring road will be helpful for your upcoming Iceland trip. We posted many Iceland travel guide videos of the ring road, so check them out!
