Inca Trail vs Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu

We’ve had Machu Picchu on our minds for a while now – you know, that mysterious city in the clouds? That famous historic site that welcomes over a million visitors each year? If you’re trying to decide whether you should hike the Inca Trail or the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu, we’ve got the the answers for you.

So, let’s start with the basics.

The renowned Inca Trail has several trail lengths and variations for you to choose from, however the most popular route would be the classic four day trek which allows you to bask in nature while passing impressive ruins such as the Runkurakay. Over the course of four days, you will cover a distance of 45 kilometres, trekking between six to nine hours a day. On the last day, you can rest easy, as the fourth day will feature just a short, two hour hike before reaching the impressive site of Machu Picchu.

An alternative option for you to make your way up to Machu Picchu is via the Salkantay Trek, covering a distance of approximately 74 kilometres – almost 30 kilometres more than the Inca Trail. In other words, this trek is not for the faint hearted. Beginning at the foothills of Marcoccasa and ending at the train station in Hidroelectrica, this is a much more strenuous climb thanks to the rougher terrain and steep ascents and descents.

Naturally, each trail offers its own unique challenges and rewards for anyone looking to conquer the respective routes. For the Inca Trail, day two will prove to be the most challenging element as you reach Dead Woman’s Pass which reaches a height of 4,215 metres (13,828 feet). As the highest point in the trail, this is by far the most grueling part to reach. From bitter winds to torrential rain, at this height you’ll be exposed to all the elements but at the same time, you’ll be ecstatic with accomplishment.

If you’re a creature that prefers your own company and alone time, consider the Salkantay Trek over the Inca Trail. The latter is trekked so frequently that the Peruvian Government has limited the number of permits granted per day (a maximum of 500 per day) and the trail is closed every year in February to complete necessary conversation and maintenance work.

On the Salkantay Trek, the number of hikers that you will cross paths with during your hike will be significantly lower as compared to the Inca Trail. Another notable feature of the Salkantay Trek is the impressive scenery and great chance of spotting deer, chinchillas and bears thanks to the lower foot traffic. The only downside of this journey is that you’ll miss passing the Inca Trail’s Inti Punku Sun Gate, which tends to be a favourite amongst travellers.

Before you start planning when to visit Peru, keep in mind that Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail are busiest in July and August. If you’re looking to strike the balance between great weather and fewer visitors, consider visiting in April or October for the best experience and to avoid trail congestion. On the other hand, the Salkantay Trek can be hiked all year-round.

Now that you’re feeling inspired and ready to hike, will the Inca Trail or the Salkantay Trek be calling your name for your next adventure?

This is The Inca Trail, 2021! If you're planning on hiking the trail, it's important to book in advance, as it's one of the most popular trails in the world and fills up really fast. Check to see if there are any regulations or limits to your specific hike, due to the ongoing global situation in 2021. I used one of the most reliable companies, Alpaca Expeditions.

Day 1: We left from Cusco to the town of Ollantaytambo, and then took a bus to Piscacucho at km 82. We started hiking from there after passing through the checkpoint. Soon, we came to the ruins of Llactapata and Huilca Raccay.

Day 2: More challenging, walking to our highest elevation at Dead Woman's Pass at 4,215m, or 13,828 ft. We kept going throughout the day, passing through the ruins of Runkurakay and Sayacmarca. With Alpaca Expeditions, this day was intentionally difficult so we could rest on Day 3 in preparation for Day 4.

Day 3: We visited the most impressive ruins on the trek, Phuyupatamarka, Intipata, and Wiñay Wayna.

Day 4: We woke up at the crack of dawn so we could follow the dark trail to the Sun Gate, or Intipunku, to see the sun rise over Machu Picchu. Then we spent the rest of the day touring Machu Picchu before taking a bus to the town of Aguascalientes where we had lunch, then a train to Ollantaytambo, and finally a bus back to Cusco.

WHAT TO PACK FOR THE INCA TRAIL?

The porters will carry a lot of your things for you. You need to carry camera equipment, a small snack, and a water bottle, as well as anything else you might need for a few hours of hiking. A warm hat, gloves and a sweater are good ideas, as it gets very cold during the trek. Coca leaves are also a good idea which you can buy for cheap at many markets in Peru. I also brought my 20000 mAh power bank with me, I use Anker. It lasted me the whole hike between my DJI Osmo Pocket and my phone.

At every checkpoint, you'll be able to access your bag which the porters carry. In this bag, I recommend
- bug spray
- toilet paper
- baby wipes
- clothes, 3 shirts and an extra pair of pants, 3 pairs of socks and underwear
Trekking poles are also a good idea. That and a sleeping bag might be provided by the tour company you go with.

IS THE INCA TRAIL DANGEROUS? HOW HARD IS THE INCA TRAIL?

I'm not an experienced hiker by any means, but I didn't think it was too bad. You absolutely must get used to the altitude before though, I was in Cusco for a few weeks before I did it. You should give yourself a few days to get used to it, at least two.

As for the actual trail, just wear sturdy hiking boots and you should be fine.

Huillca Raccay
Runkurakay
Sayacmarca
Phuyupatamarka
Intipata

Hiking the Inca Trail WITHOUT a Guide!

In November of 2021, I hiked the Inca Trail without a guide. The Peruvian Government has imposed strict rules and quotas for hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. But, if you travel 3000 miles north into Ecuador, you can hike the Inca Trail to Ingapirca all by yourself!

The Ecuadorian Inca Trail starts in Achupallas, high in the Andes. It travels up to 14,500 feet over Tres Cruces Pass and then drops back down to the town of Ingapirca at the end. This trail usually takes 3 days.

If you want to hike the Ecuadorian Inca Trail yourself, everything you need to know can be found here:
